I just have to share this with all of you...please take a look!

My younger brother Brad is on his second trip to Kenya to bring encouragement, hope, love and supplies to HIV+ widows in a neighborhood of Nairobi.  He has always had such a heart for the people of Africa and finally a year ago he was able to go the first time.  It absolutely broke his heart and strengthened his resolve to be a part of the solution for that part of the world.  He is married, has three children (his oldest, Nate, is on the trip with him) and lives a simple life in Florida.  He manages a Starbucks there and has just decided to do what he can to help.  He's just a regular guy, doing what he can do.  As you can tell, I am VERY proud of him and I wanted to share his journey with my Tea Babes.  If you want, I'll post some of his emails from this past week...they are awesome!

You can see the pictures he has taken on this trip.  Go to www.iamnotabystander.com and you'll see the tab at the top for "travel albums".  Click on that and the pictures will come up.  The way these dear people live boggles my mind.  Before this last trip, Brad asked for some specific things some of the widows said they needed.  One dear lady named Tekla said she could use some clothes.  So I packed up some of my things and sent them to Brad to take to her.  Imagine my utter delight when I saw a picture Tekla wearing an outfit I sent!  I don't say this to pat myself on the back.  Not at all.  It just blows my mind that my "extras" have brought joy to this lady.

Many of these widows make necklaces to support themselves.  Brad will bring lots back with him and I'm looking forward to ordering some.  I just had to share this with you because it has brought me so much joy, bewilderment and awe and I thought you would like it, too.  Let me know if you look at the pictures, ok?  Hugs to all, Lisa Apron

Lisa Apron,  I went to the website and looked like a few of the pictures.  They are good.  The necklaces are cute.  Quick  question,  what kind of bone and where do the teeth come from, just curious.  I really liked them.

I am proud of your brother also.  It takes special people to take time and go to third world countries and help out.  He is very special.

    Hi Carole,

What did you make good for supper?  I have about a thousand questions for my brother and one of them is what exactly are those bones and teeth from?  hee  I like the simpler beaded ones myself.  These women are so special.  If I find anything out I'll let you know.  Thanks for taking some time to look at the pics, Carole.  Have a good night.

I am totally interested in the e-mails from Brad.  I want to be nosey and read them as they come in.

I want also to know about these necklaces as I will gladly order as well.

You are good people.  Your parents did a great job!

Kathy, you sweet thang!  I really miss you.  Girl, if we lived nearby we would never get anything done and trouble would follow everywhere we go!  hee

I will post Brad's emails below.  This trip has been miraculous from the start.  They needed about $5,000 for the two of them to go (Nate is 12 BTW) and they only had about half that just three days before the trip.  Somebody sent them the balance needed just before they left.  It was so cool.

As for being good people...I dunno.  The Grace of God covers everything!!!  Big hugs to you, girl!  Lisa A.

Re: I just have to share this with all of you...please take a look!

Brad's first email was a very short, "We're here and we're safe" kind of thing.  This is what he sent on Friday...

As I write this it is Saturday 4:30 am here. I am in our kitchen enjoying a cup of Starbucks Espresso Roast from my travel French press.  I am wide awake!  I'm not sure if it's still the time change adjustment or just the fact that my body is used to getting up to go to work at Sbux at this time.  Many of you are still enjoying your Friday evenings.  I'm up and ready to "serve."
Yesterday (your Friday), Nate and I met with the hand full of the people that are involved in helping the HIV positive widows: Pastor Mickey, Ruth, Fred & Caesar.  While enjoying a cup of Kenyan hot tea, we put together a strategic plan for what we hope to do today and the rest of the week.  I am exited about what is ahead.
Earlier we visited a ministry, Amany Ya Juu, that takes in women refugees from all over East Africa.  They were women from Sudan, Chad, Uganda...all victims of recent instabilities from this region.  It is amazing to be in the presence of the very people that we hear about in the news.  I came away encouraged and inspired to help the rejected widows and orphans in Kiambiu.
Today we are going to visit several of the widows in their homes.  First, we will go to the market with Ruth and pick up healthy food for them.  Remember, the government gives them their ARV medicines but not food.  Food is what they need the most.  One of our goals for this trip is to connect with an NGO that can help us get regular food delivered to them.  Pray that we can help them look beyond today and get from point A to B.  Today it's a food program, tomorrow well envision a counseling center.
Nate is doing well and taking it all in.  The Kenyans all love him and ask him if he wants to stay here in Kenya with them instead of coming back home.  Today he said that he would like living here.
I'll keep it at that for now,  today is going to be a huge day.  I'm sure we'll have a lot to tell.  I'll have pictures, I promise.  I'll try to post some of the fun pictures that we have so far on the website right now.

Thanks for all of your encouraging emails,

Here's the next email...Tecla is the sweet lady for whom I sent clothes.  In one of the pics with her boys Brian and Caleb she is wearing a white twinset with black trim...that was mine.  I bawled like a baby!

    Hello from Kenya,

On Saturday our power went out, which knocked out our wireless at the apartments. It's good to be back on and communicating with you.  I actually survived an entire day without the Internet. Shocking!

On Saturday we spent the day in Kiambiu.  First, we went to the store and shopped for groceries in bulk.  We put together food shopping bags that had several healthy food items, enough for a few days. Then we went in and visited with widows.

We first went to Tekla and her boys home.  She was so thrilled to see us.  She gave us an update on her health, she's doing well.  In September she will have been HIV+ for 10 years.  That's unheard of in Africa.
She plans to celebrate that day like a birthday.  Brian and Caleb got their new donated shoes and they all got clothes.  They were so happy.  They said that it felt like Christmas.  Something funny: when Kenyans complement themselves on how they look, the say: "Don't I look smart?" They looked very smart! Thanks to all of you who donated those things.  They felt very loved.  Today, Brian asked if he could come visit us in the US.  My heart broke. Tekla just received an art award for a painting she did.  She was given a pedal sewing machine as a reward but does not know how to sow.  I wished Camie could have been here to teach her (Camie sews a lot). Someday...

Tekla is so special to me.  We traded bead necklaces. Being with her gives me the assurance to keep pressing on with what we are doing here.

We went on to visit, encourage, pray & deliver food to Dorothy, Celestine & Gladys.  We had an amazing time. We learned so much.  God was with us.  I was reminded that "...we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us" 2 Corinthians 4:7.

I have been so proud of Nate.  He has showed so much courage in the last few days.  He is so loved and accepted by Kenyans. He walked through the slums amongst the mud, dirt and waste with such a level of comfort and understanding.  He has such a compassionate heart for the kids.  He is soaking it all in.  Hi sense of humor is well alive also.  I think having him here has helped me cope emotionally.

We get to do this again with other widows on Monday.

We had a nice time in church today and had Kenyan Sunday dinner at Mickey's house.  It was good.  Today's highlight for me came while our driver Kennedy and I were installing Mickeys new, donated car stereo.  He had so many questions for me about Americans. He was astonished that I did not pay for/buy my wife and that her parents paid for the wedding.  He also asked questions like, how does my barber cut my hair, it was unimaginable to him.  This is from the same guy who had his first pizza ever the day before.  I love these people.

Re: I just have to share this with all of you...please take a look!

Isn't he darling?  I have a feeling his mother will greet a much older boy after this 10 day trip.  I don't have any more news today.  In fact, I should be going to bed, but I keep refreshing my mail to see if he's sent any more today.  I just keep wondering what they're doing right now.  Both my kids want to go along someday.  It would do them so much good to see how blessed they really are.

Did you see the picture of Tecla and her two boys with their new Nikes?  She is the one who has been HIV+ for 10 years.  My brother is afraid her health has been declining and is worried for what will happen to her boys when she's gone.  In fact, if it comes up, he was going to ask her for permission to adopt them and bring the to the States.  Isn't that awesome?  I may very well have two African nephews someday.  My brother is also paying for a girl to finish school.  I don't know how he does it.

I'm glad you've been enjoying my family's adventure.  I'll keep you updated as more news comes in.  Hey, how about you point that RV east and come see me?  Girl, trouble would follow us where ever we went!  It would be fun.  Big hugs to you, lady!  My sweet boy just called down for a glass of water, so I better scoot.  xxxooo Lisa

    Hiya LisaA and welcome back!

I just finished looking through all the albums and reading all the emails and I have to say I truly do have a lump in my throat! You wonder how your brother does it? I know you already know this, but I have to say it anyway because it is so obvious to me. He does it by the 'grace of God!" I honestly think I can see God's hand on his shoulder helping him to find ways to reach out to these people. And that little Nate? Can I adopt him? What a wonderful nephew you have in him! Definitely will be interesting to see the little man that comes home from his experiences!

Thanks for sharing all of this with us, Sweetie! I'll be checking back to read more!! I can just about imagine how very proud you are of your brother and nephew and the work they are doing! I'll be sure to send up some prayers for all of them and the widows they are reaching out to! HIV/AIDS is a devastating illness! I've a brother who's been living with it for 20 years. I've watched him and others and all they've had to struggle with. I can't imagine how much more difficult in must be for these women or any living in some of these 3rd world countries! I'll be interested in learning more about those necklaces, too. I used to do a 10K walk to help raise money for HIV/AIDS programs in MN. I've even gone out to speak to others about living with  the disease. I'm still amazed at how little people even in this country really know &/or understand about it. Anyway, I didn't mean to start rambling. Again, thanks for sharing this wonderful story!! I'm definitely going to stay tuned!!

Prayers to your brother, nephew and all!

    Brad's most recent email...

    Jambo Friends,

Nate and I are nzuri (Kiswahili for fine).  We've been a little tired and worn out, so we decided to take a fun day to go to  the Nairobi National Park game preserve.  We enjoyed the little break.

We saw many different animals in the last day but two of them have stood out in my mind.

The wild chameleon that we found in a bush near our apartment; As hard as we may wish we could blend in with our surroundings and mind our own business, we are sometimes found and our colors are exposed.  Only then can we really be appreciated and enjoyed by those around us.  We are not meant to live life alone our on a limb.

The ostrich staying together with friends on a flat and open observation point;  We feel safer together.  "Pamoja nibora" (together is better).  When we stay together we look out for  each other.  If we all stay on level ground we have better long-range vision.  We have time to prepare for and outwit any predator.

Tomorrow we meet and share vision with the leaders of the widows ministry.  Pray that everyone's true colors will come out and that we will be of one heart and mind.  Also, pray that we will be able to plan and avoid any predators that might get in our way.  It is a big day.

    More pictures are posted.

Asante (thanks) again for getting us here,

Re: I just have to share this with all of you...please take a look!

Here's the last email from Kenya....breaks my heart!

    Hello Friends,

Today is our last day in Kenya.  We have mixed emotions about it.  Neither Nathan or I are ready to come back home.  We feel so close to the friends that we have made this week and will miss them very much.

What is most difficult is that although we have encouraged them and provided some special things for them this week, most of them are still getting up each day and wondering how they will provide food for themselves.  There is so little to go around today that it is very difficult to save for tomorrow.  What is so impressive is that even when there is so little to go around, they share with each-other and with us.  Nathan has been very moved by the fact that we are still leaving them with very desperate situations.  We are humbled by the fact that even though we focus on the widows, all of our Kenyan friends who are helping them every day also have nothing.  They know that is is just the right thing to do.

There is hope.  On Wednesday we took the team out to a restaurant to signify an event.  We met together to formally discuss the ministry to the widowed women and orphaned children in Kiambiu.  It was a very profitable time. We worked on strategy and set some short term and long term goals.  We discussed topics such as the food program, micro loans, funding education.  All good things that will help this ministry grow and be a blessing to one another.  For my Starbucks partners and friends: as I prepared and facilitated the meeting, I realized that I was using tools and experiences that I had learned as a manager and classroom facilitator at Starbucks.  We set some ground rules, a parking lot and SMART goals for the meeting.  Thanks for those of you who have invested in me over the last several years.   As we closed the meeting I encouraged them not to forget that day.  We will look back and remember when it began because we will reflect and rejoice in the work that is yet to come.

I've been encouraging Nathan over the last couple of days not to forget these experiences but mostly the emotion that he is feeling.  May it remain on our hearts to move us and encourage us to not be bystanders.
I also encourage you, if you have been moved by the pictures and stories we shared this week, to stand with us and allow those emotions to seep into your soul and make a decision to help shape the world around you.

When we get home, Nate and I have a long to do list for Kenya along with the normal things in life: work, school, mow the lawn... We have some goals and a strategy.  Please stay tuned into what we are doing.  There will be more needs.  We will ask you to continue to serve with us in practical ways or to help fund some projects.  Here are some things to consider: micro loans to start a small business, fund someones education, donate your clothes for them to wear & trade or sell, buy the bead necklaces were bringing back, plan on coming back to Kenya with me on a future trip.

A big "?" for me right now is when to formalize the 501c3 non-profit status for I Am Not A Bystander.  Having that set up would allow us to do larger scale fund-raising events, apply for grants and a better way of funneling the resources for Africa.  The biggest hurdle is the initial cost of $1,000.  Please consider helping us raise that money.

So, today we say our goodbyes to Kenya but leave filled with hope and joy.  Today we are also memorizing (I Corinthians 13), the love chapter.  Perhaps you would like to memorize it with us.

    "Love is patient,
       "    "  kind.
    It does not envy,
      "  "     "   boast,
    it is not proud.
     "  "  "  rude,
     "  "  "  self-seeking,
     "  "  "  easily angered,
It keeps no record of wrongs.
Love does not delight in evil
    but rejoices with the truth.
    It always protects,
          "      trusts,
          "      hopes,
          "      perseveres.
    Love never fails."
