Re: I checked the price of yeast while I was out

I buy my yeast at BJ's.  It is less than $5.00 for 2 one pound packages.  I open a package and store it in a glass jar in the refrigerator.  I have never had it go bad.  It could also be stored in the freezer.

Morningdove, I want you to contact this company and ask if they have a group they deliver to in your area. They are based in Oregon and sell to health food stores. Hers is how it works. We have a group in my town and we receive delivers for FREE. No shipping, no gas ect. We only have to spend at least $500 as a group to get it with no shipping. They deliver to one house and the group picks up their items that afternoon. We get items for the same price that the stores buy it. Often this is 50% less! They also have monthly fliers with sale items and that is the best stuff to buy. They sell everything!!! If I knew what town you lived in I coudl even tell you when they deliver in your area as I have their schedual.

Let's revive this for Morningdove. Depending on where you live in Washington, you should not have a problem to find a healthfood store or especially a healthfood co-op where they sell bulk yeast. I know tey have had two co-ops in Olympia since the late 60s and no doubt ther are others. I know there is a good sized one in the little town of Republic up in ne Washington, they even bake bread to sell. J

Dove, just ask your Chamber of Commece to find out where the nearest co-op is.

Way on the east side of Spokane there used to be a business that sold bulk items to bakeries, I even bought fresh compressed yeast there in one lbs cubes.

There are places where you can buy cheaper, all it takes to find them is a bit of effort.

gr_elo, how do you make your yeast sponge? My German grandmother died before I even got to ask her how she made hers. I've got a lot of her recipes but that is one recipe that she never wrote down. I've tried to re-create her cinnamon buns and it hasn't worked. I make homemade bead every 2 days. I've found it is healthy for my family. More fiber and the slices aren't supersized bread on streiods.

I get yeast at Sam's Club.  It's about $4 a pound.  It will last me a very long time.

Morning Dove, do you have any Bosch stores up by you?   That's where I get my SAF yeast here in Utah.   I can't believe what they charge in the regular grocery stores.

I don't know if you're on the east or west side - I have a friend on Healthy Choices who told me there was a Bosch store in Spokane but that closed a few years ago.

So sad the price for yeast is so ridiculous.

Our buying club here in sw ND gets the supplies from Azure but we get charged 8.5% for shipping. Before gas went up in price we paid 5%, then 6% and now  we will most likely get a hike in shipping charges again.

Azure you have to watch, they are not always on the level. If they are out of stock your credit is NOT noted on the invoice you get. You have to re-order and even if you re-order in RED INK and do not pay again, they will not send it. Also, with items like old fashioned peanut butter, yogurt, tofu and such you have to watch and check your items. The often pawn off stuff that is within days of expiration. I always paid with a check I mailed to our buying club, except ONE time. Since we get delivery only evewry other month and I needed some small item badly, I called and used my credit card and had it mailed. For the next order (a friend and I ordered together) of $210.00 6 weeks later I again sent a check like I have done for 7 yrs, Guess what? They cashed my check and also charged my credit card. It took me 2 1/2/ months to get my money back and only when I told them I would sue them for unauthorized use of my credit card.  Their book keeping system stinks.

The only reason I stay with the buying club and azure is the reasonable shipping, their prices are OK but not really wholesale and they have also discontinued a lot of bulk items and now carry too much prepared foods. Easy to find low fat or no fat but try and find something that is low sodium, they just don't have it.

    Cooking71,

WHERE do you live to rate free shipping from Azure? If you  get free shipping we have been cheted for many years since we have always had to pay.

I don't trust that out fit  when it comes to money. Many here had bad experiences but they are the only ones who deliver in this area. They drop our stuff off in Belfield, right at the interstate highway and one of our members has to drive  65 miles (one way) to pick the order up.

See your post to Morningdove for an explaination.

If you buy bulk you might want to check out this website..  www.bulkfoods.com/

I don't know how much things are anywhere so I don't know if it's cheaper.  I do beleive it is but I could be wrong.

Grelo I live in Central WA and we do not get charged the shipping only if our group orders enough for that delivery. We have at least 6 groups in my town that I know of and the company comes here twice a month. I personally have never had issues like you with the charging or old food. As with buying food anywhere, I watch my prices and make sure I really am getting a good deal. Typically I buy from the sales fliers as those are the best deals. Also this may be important, my state does not tax food.

I went shopping at Costco (for those that are not familiar with this store is like Sams club)  I bought a 2lb thing of yeast for .....$3.39!Big Smile  We actually spent about $1,000 in that store.  We had three carts full.  It doesn't help that we got a printer and electical razer (for a hundred bucks) either.  I bebt we saved just as much as we spent though.  And we had fun!!!!!!

What's the difference between rapid rise and instant yeast?  Or are they the same thing with different names?
