PCH Kitchen May 2008 April Showers Bring May Flowers

Wilted Flower Wilted Flower Good Morning ladies, well April has come and gone and here is May and hopefully your flowers will soon be in bloom. My roses have been blooming for some time now, so here is one for you as well. I have Hot Cocoa Roses, which are a orange brown and a bight yellow Julia Child rose bush in between the Hot Cocoa's This morning I am off to SAM's but looked first to see if maybe Lin might have flung the door open and dusted off the WELCOME mat. Lin hope the foot is doing better this morning and maybe you are just sleeping in or resting a bit with the foot up. What is everyone doing today, this first day of May? I need to get moving and get myself down to Lake Charles, and picking up a couple set of step risers for our neighbor, saving them a trip to Lowes as I will be down in that area. Sorry so short, but just wanted to see if anyone had put out any goodies, so Kerry made the coffee this morning and I will put out English muffins and some jellies, and there are some boiled eggs as well. *grin* A quick funny this AM. Kerry was going to fry himself a couple eggs this morning and have some English muffins, the raisin cinnamon. But I took a egg off the shelf of the refrigerator I had laid there yesterday and pulled the carton of eggs out for Kerry, he cracked a egg from the carton with the other egg from the shelf, tried to crack the other egg I had handed him first, it cracked open some but would not break. It was a boiled egg. *giggles* Just had to share, give you a grin. Hugs, Connie

Yeah, you be a stinker alright! Did he laugh as big as you did? Are you actually going to look for more stuff to plant at Sam's, Connie? Reminds me of my dad, putting a small garden in their back yard. He got that finished up and every day would go out and dig up another row or two, finally the whole back yard was garden. When I went to visit though, I sure did like those strawberries from his patch, one would fill a coffee cup, no exageration either. And the rhubarb, oh how I love the mixture in a pie. Or jam too. Sounds so good to make soon. I haven't had either one in years.

I've been busy with the road trip you know about, to help out a bit with friends and that's why I dug out my sandles. They're made like Fisherman's sandles, only in a slide version and a built-in support under leather innersoles. Like a clog, but no high heel like some. I wear them all year actually unless I have snow or rain. So I've gotten all my checks written this morning, ready for mailing, and the online bills paid, so now will get my meds picked up and a gas fill-up ($3.48 a gallon yesterday), and back home to bake banana bread. May stop at Hardee's for a steak biscuit with egg & cheese to go.

That's my big plans for today. I got everything else done yesterday while I was out several hours. So will check back later to see what's new with everyone. Big hug to all...

Good afternoon ladies, hi Lin and Ruth, glad to see you two have made it in today. Ummmm wonder what the other gals are up to, or if they are battling trying to get into the BB or PCH? No Lin, I didn't buy any plants down at SAM's, was supposed to be a few groceries, but....... well was more than a few, included a bag of basmati rice, I like it once in a while, well more than once in a while, but limit myself, so it is in the deep freeze for the time being. And picked up a couple things for the neighbor there, as well as the step risers for the husband putting on his Momma's new porch he is building her. Oh I am having a sugar fix I think here for lunch ladies, bought some fresh corn on the cob yesterday and nuked one in wrap in the microwave for lunch and it taste sweet as sugar, looks like it might be peaches and cream corn or something on that line, yellow and white kernels, delicious, but still to hot to eat much off, burned my lip. *grin* Lin I have three cucumber plants attempting to come up and Kerry tried killing one the other day helping me put up my fence for some climbing cucumbers to grow on, or I am hoping that will happen, we will see. Other wise I have no room for anything else I don't think, at least for the moment. I am trying to start some seeds on the deck for maybe later gardening, again we shall see. So no plants for me today. You talking about strawberry rhubarb pie, the first time I had that mixture was in a cobbler, ummm, talk about delicious so many years ago when I was a child. Your banana bread sounds really good, well any of that sounds good. LOL. I took a breadk and finished my corn on the cob, yep, it was as good as the first bite was, the whole thing. I have some Earth shoes I wear Lin as well, year round and people can't figure why I wear them in the winter, easy enough to slide in and out of and it is warmer here though in the winter. Sometimes I will slide on enclosed ones for church, hehehe. Well time for me to get busy here, but wanted to say hello and give a bump. Ruth are you going on sick call at the hospital where you have to sit and wait? Hope the lines have gotten shorter over the years, but I am not betting on it. Prayers for all our ladies in need, as well as our Troops and emergency workers. Have a good afternoon, SYL. Hugs, Connie

Good Aft. I guess everyone's on computer vacation, huh?Connie, I've been so lazy since I got back home 4 hours ago.I did everything I said I would but just didn't have any wind in the sails to do anything but sit after I ate that biscuit. It was good too.I usually have about 2 a year, like a Big Mac, and a couple other things I limit severely, like ice cream.Sometimes you just need that good tasting fat I guess.I have both things in the freezer so I may just make a small pie, if I can drag myself to get out the FP and make pie dough.I did get 3 more recipes typedtoday, so it wasn't a total waste, but some days I just drag along till it's almost over and then don't want to get stuff out to make a mess in the kitchen. So maybe I'll talk myself into some motivation right now.I'd rather have a pie than anything else. When my DD was here from KY, they wanted me to join them for breakfast, the buffet was included with the room, and lots of sweet snacks in the afternoon too that they missed out on, but I do know now why my DD in VA loves Hampton Inn best when they do 3-day mini vacations.Anyhow they served the most wonderful little Sausage/Egg/Cheese Quiche I found in the Schwan's catalog, that I been wanting to make for a long time. I'm going to use the cornmeal crust you posted in April. One recipe also had Cornmeal Cups, if you remember those. Both were nearly the same.So that would be my other big ambition for May.Today is my youngest sister's birthday, 10 years younger than myself.Ruth, I do hope you'll get help with your eyes. That sort of thing really scares me.I just don't know how I'd be able to handle an eyesight problem. My mother had cataracts and during her surgery on one, her B/P shot up and they wouldn't do the other, so it became blind. That was in the 70s, so things have very much improved now. It's one thing I keep close watch on, because the doctor (new dr.) that examined me last year said I had the beginning of one.I sure hope she was wrong. So anyhow, bumping this up once more.I'll go get my self busy and make sure my frozen fruits are still good, if not will make the other.Don't have any dinner cooked, or leftovers either, because the big moocher is trying to eat all my groceries. She sits on my back step to the deck with this pitiful look like she is completely starved and I'm more convinced than a week ago, she is an expectant mother-to-be.Maybe why she appeared out of nowhere one day.Of course, she has had pieces of raw steak that was given to me and I never wanted it and got too old, so now she is definitely in love...it was at least 2 pounds. Her hair is looking better though. She goes all the the homes, but if I start my car or come home, she beats tracks to see what I've got.lol.TTYAL.

    Hi Girls,

These pages took 4ever to load, driving me nuts.  Connie, I to no longer recieve Taste Of Home magazines of any kind.  After asking for our own room and doing that so many times with no reply I just figured I am done with them.  O.k. off the soap box, just get irritated is all.

Sounds like you got some good buys at sam's Connie.  We always get more than we intended ourselves when we go.  LOL Poor Kerry, had to laugh about the egg situation.  Were you being sneaky and leaving the hard boiled one there for him?  Can just imagine him thinking what in the heck is going on here.  Glad your plants are doing well, still to cold here to plant as of yet but hopefully soon.  I love corn on the cob as well, can't waite for it to come on here, will be a long while though.

Lin, hope things are well with you and that your foot is feeling some better today.  Sounds like you did the same as I did yesterday, just chores.  Hope you have a good day.  Hmmmmmmmmm banana bread sounds good.

Ruth, hope they can get you in to see the eye doctor.  Best to let Rose drive you while your eye is bothering you.  Hope things go well.  Have a good day.

Well have done some laundry and swept and swiffered the floor with the wet jet.  Cleaned up the kitchen and then have been answering some e-mails.  Need to get started on the cookbook for my friend, was going to do it yesterday but wasn't feeling to well.  Well you all take care and talk to you soon.  Hugs, Ann

Re: PCH Kitchen May 2008 April Showers Bring May Flowers

Ann good to see you posting as well today, I bet you are loving that new floor, that you can swiffer it instead of hauling out the vac! One of these years maybe. Hope you get to feeling better Ann, just take it easy and rest and then rest some more. Boy doesn't Lin's banana bread sound goodddd, yummy. I popped a few grape tomatoes that I bought today, washed them and enjoyed before going outside to mow in the very back property, I had started it the other day and it looks like rain here so figured I would go finish that part. Windy as all get out or at least the gusts and throwing that junk up into the air, so watched my eyes. The weekend is almost here, what is everyone going to do? Me? I think I want to be lazy but I need to bake pies Saturday, evening probably and Kerry and a co-worker who returned a couple weeks ago from Kuwait, they are going to just take his camper and leave Kerry's boat at home. Going to Cameron and will be fishing off the jetty's down there for Drum fish I believe, or just fish PERIOD! Lin it sounds as if your friend that visits you is in loveeee, lol, laugh about her beating it back when she hears your vehicle to see what you have. Molly does that too, but only she has to see me as she cannot hear the Kia. I think she takes short naps of a day so she can see when I may pop outside, or dangit, maybe it is her nose, lol. I can sneak by her sometimes and then up she pops. Or I go out and just touch her and she jumps like she is shot, bless her heart. Well if your friend is going to have babies, no wonder some people would drop her off, poor thing. She will probably bless you with them as well Lin. Your steak and biscuit sounds like it would be good, where do you by them at? I am cheating this evening and fixing one of those specialty pizza's that is huge, got it at SAM's, the sticker said it is pepperoni, but I looked at the pepperoni ones and then the supreme and this was a supreme with the pepperoni price on it, 2.00 dollars cheaper, they marked it wrong. I boiled two eggs extra and had planned on eating them today, but had one last evening and the one that Kerry did not eat. LOL. Yes, I did it on purpose and could not help laughing and he was wondering why, then he found out, ohhhh myyy, I am bad I know. I forgot Kerry's milk so I need to run to the Dollar Store and pick up a gallon and let him think I am the good housewife and got everything. LOL NOTTTTT! SYL, Connie

Thanks Connie, new room looks fresh and flowery. Yummy English Muffins.

Lin, have a good road trip. Mention of rhubarb jam made me hungry. Our small Christmas jar is used up. Love it on waffles.

Ruth, hope you could see eye DR. Glad you took Rose along to drive.

Hi Ann, hope you are feeling better today. DH has the swifter he uses on the kitchen floor.

Well, we have had a dry day and DH got a golf game in. Sun was in and out and didn't warm up enough for me to want to go outside today. Weekend is suppose to be sunny. Can wait.

Good evening Deery, glad you made it today, yes the flowers sure look pretty don't they. *smile* Maybe you will be blessed this weekend with some sun shine, hope so for your sake so you can get out for some sun therapy. Most of us need it once in a while don't we. Ummm I wonder if Nancy is sitting watching Survivor tonight? I've been watching part of it but letting it tape as well. *grin* Was your Christmas jar of rhubarb jam sugar free Deery, or regular? Well I think the guys have the last copper pipe fixed, at least sure hope so. Connie

Good morning, a quick note before my "road trip"  to the friends and to see if there's anything they need. I call it road trip because of the miles vs. my gas tank. Do I travel there very often, or do without the needed/wanted groceries? Just a gripe... Ruth, I'm glad you got to the doctor. The banana bread turned out very light and delicious, but prefer the one with cake mix for myself, actually. I know that one uses a lot of added ingredients besides cake mix, but it's just a better flavor and texture. The one I used yesterday is more like pound cake texture, but lighter than a dense pound cake. Can't explain any better. I'm sure it will be much appreiated. It made 2 loaves plus a mini. So I'll have more of the mini with my coffee, and get ready to leave. SYAL.

Good morning, checking in before getting ready to go I am packed just a few things to do here so home will not look bad when i come back.  we had real bad weather early that woke me up and was under tornado watch for a while. the news just said could get that way again this evening and in the morning so sure hope not we need good weather for travailing and while there. Have not talked to Rose or Debbie yet. Debbie has to go to work for part of the day so it will be afternoon before we leave, (she is the one that cooks at our Burger Bar) so she may make hamburgers for us to eat on the way.  any way I may not get to come back on till I get back Sunday night so ya'll try real hard to be god while I am gone.

Lin, have fun shopping, your banana bread sounds good, have you posted the recipe for the one made with cake mix? if not would you please post it or maybe repost it ? would love to try that one,

well better get busy I have a kitchen that needs cleaning and I have been on here longer then I should have been.    as Rose's DGD says a lot "Bad Ruthie"

See ya all back here in the kitchen Sunday night some time

Re: PCH Kitchen May 2008 April Showers Bring May Flowers

Good morning Lin, Ruth and all who follow. I started to say enjoy your weekend, Kerry took off today, so seems like Saturday, I am mixed up. You ladies are both going on road trips and leaving myself and whoever else comes in alone it seems, well I sure hope you enjoy your trips and have good weather both going and coming home. Lin it is nice that you help your friends like you do in their time of need, how is he doing these days? The same? Bobby isn't it? Kerry has gone on a road trip as well to Alexandria, and I am going to start on homemade tamales this morning after I clean up the kitchen from breakfast. Fresh potatoes shredded for hash browns and made ham, cheese, mushroom and sweet onion for omelets, and buttered and fried raisin English muffins for our breakfast to get the day started. Pipe did not seal last evening, so has to be re-done, aggravating. Ann what are you and Jim doing this weekend? Marie will probably be so busy today with work and Sara's prom is tomorrow night, and yes she was serious about driving her Dad's truck. LOL. Making lasting memories for sure, how funny. Deery is the weather any sunnier out your way today, early for you yet as I type this. Liz is away on her trip as well, hope her toe is not keeping her in pain and she is able to enjoy herself. TC, wonder often if she is out riding these days? Penny hope your auditing goes well and no surprises, only good. Nancy are you doing any quilting lately, or are you and Bill out and about, hope you are feeling ok, or better at least. Lisa have you recovered from your trip home? Helen how did the meeting go with the Navy, would be much interested to hear what your lawyer hit them up with and their answers for some of the things they are doing. You and Katie take care. Dee today is another day at the cleaners, hope you are doing ok and not struggling with them to much and that you are not in pain. Is David over his flu yet? Charli, well I think about her often and have spoke to her a couple times and she seems to be doing ok, life keeps her busy and storms sometimes keep her under the bed. Talked to her about the snakes and alligator the other day and she said "enough now!" Creeps her out as well and she had seen two snakes in the road as they went to the little store close to them, so I am not the only one seeing snakes. hehe. Well I need to call and straighten some medicine deal up, *sigh* just what we all want to do on Friday right? Enjoy your weekend ladies. SYL. Hugs, Connie

    Good Morning Girls,

Lin and Ruth, hope you both have a good trip.  You girls have a good weekend.  Lin, I bet your visits are very appreciated, hope your friend is not in to much pain.

Deery, hope the weather is better for you so you can enjoy the outside this weekend.  It has been cool here although was warmer later in the day yesterday, still dark outside like it was going to rain.  I was going to tell you we had a visit just outside of our yard yesterday morning.  Looked out and saw three does scampering around and thought of you.  (Deery)

Dee, stay safe and hope those spasms go away, does that keep you from your treatment?  You be careful and stay safe.

Connie, sounds like you will be all by your lonesome this weekend.  Well hopefully you will have a restful weekend.  You know those men need their male bonding time.  Was going to ask you how Patty Cake and her babies are doing?  Hope they are o.k.  Sorry to hear your pipe didn't seal, grrrrrr hate when that happens.  Hope you have a nice weekend.

Well today I am going to be trying to finish up that cookbook for my friend.  House cleaning is done so that is nice.  Going to put a pork roast in the crockpot for dinner, new recipe from the board so I will post it if it is good.  Tommorrow we are going to a retirement party for 3 friends that are retiring from the forest service.  I am making my baked beans w/smoked sausage.  They are doing bbq and having a band so should be alot of fun.  No plans for Sunday maybe just helping Jim with some yard cleanup.  I am feeling better now, had some chest spasms which is not uncommon during allergy season.  I have mild asthma so use an inhaler this time of year.  I have been watching the news, scary weather for alot of people.  They said there were tornados in Texas, Nancy please stay safe.  Also tornadoes in Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma and by what Dee said maybe in Indiana as well.  You gals stay safe and be careful.  So sad in Arkansas a 15 year old girl was killed when a tree fell through the house onto her while she was sleeping.  Her brother was also hurt very badly but did survive.  Well you all take care and will check in later or tommorrow.  TTL Ann
