Free biscuit cutters

I didn't realize that plain, straight-sided biscuit cutters were so hard to find until I needed to replace my 30-year-old one recently.  The only store ones I found (gourmet shop) were quite expensive.  Then I saw them on my laundry shelf!  That's right - the tops of liquid detergent bottles work fine, and come in several different sizes.  Problem solved - for free.

I keep an eye out for a empty can that is the size I want.  If possible I cut off both ends and use it to cut whatever I need.  The plastic tops are great also.

Jersey, how do you cut the end off a...say 28 ounce can, so that the edges are sharp enough to cut through biscuit dough?

I used to have one of those can openers that would cut the can, rather than the lid, but it scared me, every time I used it...I think I finally threw it away, or something.

My hand can opener seems to do a good job.  The edge is not super-sharp but good enough to cut the dough.  I use the small cans, like 8-14 oz. or so.  Still have a good plastic biscuit cutter from Tupperware.

Rather than have one more thing to store (even if it is free), I just do what our grandmother's did--and grab a glass out of the cabinet.  Works fine.

Drinking glass work quite well too and come in different sizes too.  I use smaller ones for the kids and larger for the grown ups.

Did not realize that another had posted the same answer as me, but am going to say it anyway;

Just reach up and grab a glass or cup and you have a good biscuit cutter.

I would be careful about using detergent bottle lids in the kitchen.  They are not food grade plastic and are not advised to be used around food, even if well cleaned.

I have another solution--the lazy way. Just buy frozen biscuits! Actually, until I was married 42 years ago I never knew that there was anything but a can with the ends removed.

My mom always used a Campbell's soup can with both ends cut out.  It's a perfect size and almost free.  If you want a larger biscuit, a medium vegetable can would work just as well.

For years I have used metal juice cans for biscuit cutters.

I use the top from cooking spray cans.  Clean and easy to use and you can just wash and put back on the can.

My Mother always uses a glass cup for cutting out biscuts.....

I just use different size can's that veggies come in.Punch 3 or 4 holes in the top for air to come out. Works really good. I use small cans when I serve biscuit's with a dinner meal.Makes a nicer looking meal, I think.
