    needles

    Sad

Has anyone been out on insulin and are petrified of having to do the needles ?

I have an appointment Wed to see the diabetic nurse to learn how to give myself the needles and I am petrified of needles, I have been put on insulin as I can not control my sugar levels, after fasting they are still at 14.9 so my doctor decided to put me on the insulin I keep telling myself that its only once a day but I wake up at night and just cry, has anyone else had that problem and how did you get over it.

    Thanks Alice

    Re: needles

Alice - Fortunately, I'm not on insulin. But my ex-boss was. She was very scared of needles, too (just like you and I). But she said she has no problems giving herself the shots. They showed her how to do it so it won't hurt and she said it really doesn't.  When she told me she was going on insulin, I told her I didn't know if I could do that because I'm so afraid of needles.  But she does fine with the shots.  Good luck.

    Re: needles

Alice, I do not use insulin on a regular basis but when I'm all pukey sick I have to use it as my blood sugars go way out of control. It's ok to be scared. The needles are small and you don't feel it. Give yourself time and each day will get easier. Know you have friends here and please let me know (actually any of us) if you need more support. After you get the hang of things, look into pumps. I volunteer at a Diabetes Camp every summer and am amazed at how much freedom they provide. If/when I need to go on insulin, my MD knows that is the route I'd want and is very supportive of this. I'm sorry you need to be on insulin but again, you can do this. Pat yourself on the back each and every time you give yourself the injection. Let us know how things are going.
