GED is NOT equivalent to a diploma in any state.

How will they get into an top tier university, let alone any accredited college?

Even assuming they were well taught... isn't the central caveat of Fundie 'schools' aimed at blocking ANYTHING that contradicts their religious ideology? If contrasting POVs are omitted from their lessons and they are prohibited from learning new ideas contrary to the approved doctrine, how do they ever develop the critical thinking skills necessary to function as a rational, logical and informed member of society?

LP, obviously not everyone thinks those critical thinking skills ARE necessary.

Okay.  Babies are a blessing from God.  Good health is a blessing from God.  Finding true love is a blessing from God.  Finding a life's work which is emotionally and financially rewarding is a blessing from God.  Having enough to eat is a blessing from God.

That something is considered a blessing does not imply that those who do not recieve that particular gift are accursed.  "Give us this day our daily bread" does not mean that God hates the wheat intollerant.

I'm sure that my cousin, whose older child is adopted and younger child was born to her, does not consider the younger any more a blessing than his big sister is.  More of a surprise, but not more of a blessing.

Sorry I was gone yesterday and missed the highlights of this 'conversation' in real-time...but reading it now was still very enlightening.

It still comes down to what I believe, feel & know....compared to what 'you' believe, feel & know.

It's the Duggar family's business, not yours or mine.

The Duggar's did set themselves up for this debate when they allowed any TV program or magazine article to be written on or about them.  My one hope at this time is that they don't frequent or come across this board to read the rude, vindictive things said about them without anyone here knowing them on a personal basis, but sounding like they know their innermost thoughts....but like I said, they set themselves up for it.

Also wish some didn't have to be sound so hateful...but what can you expect from one that agrees with the Duggar's lifestyle yet still manages to squeeze into an interersting debate, the ever-so-hateful term q u e e r s??  I should learn to expect it from her. I wonder how she'd manage to toss that term in if we were discussing soldiers who have died in this war or how to make a freakin' layer cake?  I'm sure she'd get it in somehow, as it troubles her so much....those thoughts must consume her night and day.

They are NOT going around saying "HA HA, I've had 17 children #18 on the way so what's wrong with you?  You must be doing something wrong and God is mad at you."  NOT EVEN CLOSE.      They probably could care less one bit what any of us think.  They are doing what is right for them.  Yes the TV thing is a bit much.  But again. it's them.  The education thing with the children is also their business.  I saw on one episode when the vehicle broke the oldest son got right under the hood and helped his dad until they got it fixed.  He worked right along side of his dad to help with the new house.  Honestly neither one of my own boys could do that.  My hubby does our basic electrical repairs, plumbing repairs.appliance repairs,  basic car repairs and can do basic wood working jobs around our house.  Neither of our 2 boys picked up any of that.  So I hope they make good money to be able to pay the right people to do those things for them.  Now if the Duggar children  are not above average in the curriculum dept. so what,  many who go to public & private school need extra help to graduate and also to get into and finish college--no shame in that.  It's pretty normal for many young people AND ADULTS to need a little extra review & reinforcment of academics today.  Heck if I went back to school today (high school or nursing school) I SURE would need academic help.

All 18 of those children WILL have to make a choice for themselves and make their own lives out there in the world.   One day Michelle & Jim Bob will not be around and they will be on their own.  Just because their Mom had 18 doesn't mean each and every one of them will do the same.  Our BIL & SIL had 12 & I guarantee you NONE of their 12 will have that many.  They've all gone to college.  They've all made decent lives for themselves.  The Duggars shouldn't be any different if that's what each child wants.  Just because RIGHT NOW all  that the girls & boys see is their big family there will be a time when that changes.  When they do get to see what's out there they may just go and do exactly opposite of their mom & dad (stay single, travel, get a FULL education and be exactly what they want to be).

Compared to some children I see and work with each day the Duggar children are heads above in the respect and cooperation dept.  Hard work never killed anybody.  They have the rest of their lives to be independent, footloose and fancy free if they want to be.

Whoever said a GED is not equivalent to a high school diploma is right.  Last I knew by far the majority of graduating high school seniors couldn't pass the GED. Surprise I personally know a CFO of a large corp. who started with his GED.  In the big picture, GED or high school diploma, doesn't matter much.  Life's what you make it.

LOL Renee, you sound like a kindergarten teacher!  I tend to say what I want, when I want, just like you do, Renee.  Let's each mind our own business, shall we? Big Smile

Editing to add that the statistics I found regarding GED are that 40% of high school seniors couldn't pass it.  I stand corrected in that 40% is not a majority.

I can't think of a time when I've gone after any group of people OBB, "just like you do..".  So please don't compare the two of us...ever.

    Done.

    If indeed you're even a mother--have a nice one.

I know or am aquainted with many people who have been homeschooled through HIgh school, didn't (of course) get a high school diploma, but rather took the GED, passed and went on to college, some to community, some to university, and are good people and citizens.

I rarely check in here anymore, it is hard to believe I've read every post on this thread. LOL

Very telling about all the posters here, I'd say.  Not too surprising.  I'm glad God will be doing all the judging; I don't think He will need any help and I'm very appreciate of that. LOL

I'm from a family of 12 myself but I was only blessed with 2 children of my own. Two of my sisters adopted. My family had a reunion recently and I felt very blessed with my earthly family and friends.  I have as many family members in heaven as I have here I truly believe.

May God bless the Duggers and their children.

Re: Well the Duggar's are at it again

I came  from a large family (7 kids, 1 half brother and 2 half sisters) and each and every one of us has done well. No we didn't have the best of everything but we loved  and respected our parents.  And not once do I ever remember my parents accepting public assistance. Back then it was common for families  to have  7-10 children.

We had a neighbor who married and had 13 children by his 1st wife, divorced her and had 12 by his second wife. He owned a sawmill and put his sons to work. They had one daughter.  All are high school or college graduates, all are  respected members of the community. At least 2 own multi million businesses. In my opinion thats about  23 too many kids. It's confusing enough to keep up with a couple of kids, I can't imagine trying to take care of and educate  the  Duggars children.
