    Talk about sticker shock!!

I went to the drug store to pick up a script that the Dr. said was a little pricey, but need to take the place of coumadin 7 days prior to surgery and for 2-3 days after. Went to pick them up and they told me that my co-pay for 10 medicine filled syringes was $87. So I asked the girl if the insurance had paid anything. I thought the co-pay was a little high or maybe they didn't pay for any of it..She looked at me with kind of a surprised expression and said that they most certainly did. She then proceeded to show me the authorization to pay the store - get this- $1029.54 for those 10 syringes. A 'little pricey'??? that's 100.00 plus per syringe. Thank God for my Medicare supplement that includes drug coverage.  I will stop complaining about the $500 per month that it costs me!!!! My co-pay for a months supply of the 6 drugs I take is 75.00 per month which was why I questioned the co-pay to begin with..Such is life in the slow lane!!!!

I feel your pain Scheidgirl, between the co-pays to the specialist at $40 a pop (I've been seeing them every couple weeks these days) and co-pays for the tests they run - then a pile of drugs...$40 co-pays on all them, well, except one..the BP med is only $10.  Now they want me to start on something else, they're not sure the insurance will pay for it Confused - it just never ends.  The doctors are all an hour away, so the gas to run to the appointment just adds to it.

I was taking Humira for rheumatoid arthritis for a while -- $800 per injection.  Luckily, I only had to take 2 injections a month.  And also luckily, we had very good insurance and I paid very little for the drug.  The doctor told me about one of his patients who paid it all out-of-pocket because his insurance wouldn't approve it.  I wouldn't have taken it if I had to pay.

A neighbor's friend has re-occuring wet macular degeneration and went to Rapid City to get shots into the eye to "kill" the bleeding tiny bloodvessels. One shot into theye is $1200.00.

Medication prices are not only insane but outright obscene.

my daughter is 8 and is already going through puberty.  the dr said there was a shot to stop it but it was more for a social need than medical so that she wouldn't feel out of place with her other friends.  we decided to get the shot but i would have to give it to her.  i went to pick it up and they told me at the pharmacy that my insurance doesnt cover this particular medicine.  I was like it's only 1 shot it shouldn't be to much i'll just pay it.  Talk about sticker shock, 1 shot was $1200 per shot and she needed a shot every month until they wanted her to start puberty in 3 years.

Babyblue, unless the medication of that sort has changed in composition and they have done more research I would nOIT give your daughter the shot but talk to another doctor about it.

Don't laugh, but something like that came on the market in 1964-65 for DOGS. We lived in Alaska and I had a male and a B!tch Rottweiler. There was no way I could keep the male in the house at the time she was in season and it was in the middle of thewinter and c would have frozen to death outside. The Veterinarian recommended this NEW shot which would prevent the b!tch from coming into heat. It workled but, 2 yrs later, when we decided to have a litter of pups it was disaster. She aborted two pups, a thrid was a shrvelled up mummy and only three were b whelped healthy.

By that time we lived in WA and I swore I would never try something like that again.

I would be very leary about shots like that and would a LOT more research before decididng to do it on one doctor's word.

Read it and weep, you are right about it being "obscene".  My dh had a liver transplant, and has to take 26 meds a day, they cost over $6,000 every 6 weeks.  Plus, after a liver transplant, the person "becomes" diabetic, so he has insulin pens, for 3 injections a day, and another insulin that is different that he takes before bedtime, this stuff is around $2,000 for 7 weeks.  Thank heaven's we have good insurance because he has not officially retired yet.  Several of the meds he has to take the rest of his life in order to not reject the organ.   He says if it turns out someday that we can't pay anymore, he will just have to die.   And that's the way it is here in the good old USA.   Drug companies and the people in Congress who get supported by them are the actual "Kings" of this country.

Get in touch with the drug companies. Most will help you out. My aunt about fell over when she went to get a scrip filled for my uncle. The pharmacist put her in touch with the social worker from the hospital my uncle had just been released from, and the social worker made a phone call to the drug company and explained the situation. My uncle's scrip was only for 21 days, but the drug company sent free of charge a 60 day supply "just in case".

My DD was nine when she started getting her period. She just started one day at school and her friend's mother happened to be there and got her a pad etc.. By the time I saw DD she was very happy about the whole thing. She had been through those health-ed classes at school and knew what it was.  She didn't let the fact that she was younger than most bother her. My advice is let nature take it's course and don't worry about a shot.

Go on www.costco.com  and hit pharmacy.  You can check and see if they have any of these drugs or syringes.  You do  NOT have to be a member to get scripts there.  DD gets one there for $8.00 instead of $65.  Walgreens and Longs are high anyway.

My best to you,  take care.

    Re: Talk about sticker shock!!

It really makes no difference where I go-my co-pay is determined by the insurance co. I get all my drugs at the same place all the time. They keep watch and make sure that I do not get scripts that interfer with each other. After thinking it over, I guess that $87 isn't so bad against the almost $1100 I would have had to pay with out the insurance...
