****PRAYER CIRCLE TUESDAY MAY 13, 2008****

Grace and peace from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ! Once again, another lesson from my friend at church.

    "Extravagant Giving"

"While he was in Bethany , reclining at the table in the home of a man known as Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head.

Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another, 'Why this waste of perfume? It could have been sold for more than a year's wages and the money given to the poor.' And they rebuked her harshly.

'Leave her alone,' said Jesus. 'Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them any time you want. But you will not always have me. She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial. I tell you the truth, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.' "

    Mark 14:3-9 [emphasis added]

It was an extravagant gift. Mary "did what she could" (verse 8), and what she did was huge.

It was a costly gift. The alabaster jar or flask was costly in and of itself. Often this type of decanter was used as a decorative piece in the homes of the wealthy.Idea The contents, nard, was even more priceless. Mary's gift was worth more than a year's wages. A single denarius was thought to be a day's wages for the common laborer of the day, and the perfume and its container were worth at least 300 denarii. It was a present for a king. For Mary, it was an act of faith in the Lord Jesus, the Christ. She had made Him her King.[ii]

It was a selfless gift. We see no record of hesitation in the giving of the gift. No thoughts of, "Can I afford this? What will my bank account look like? How will I pay my bills?" No, not one hint of reluctance in the giving. Just love for her King.

It was given from a right heart. Mary broke the jar and poured it over Jesus. Once a flask of this type was broken, it could not be reused. Its long, slender neck was meant to be broken. It was the only way to get the nard out. The breaking of the jar points to the brokenness of Mary's heart. As she offered this gift, she gave it to the Lord.

Mary sat at Jesus' feet and learned from Him in the past. In Luke 10:38-42, we see that she chose to sit and listen to Jesus and His teaching while her sister, Martha scurried about. Mary fed on the words of Jesus. Her sensitive heart was being prepared for this moment. She was grateful to her Lord as she remembered how Jesus miraculously had raised her brother, Lazarus, from the dead (John 11: 42-44). Mary was grateful for Jesus' forgiveness and could never get enough of Jesus' teaching or presence. Mary worshiped Jesus enough to believe the prophecy concerning His impending death. The total devotion of Mary's broken heart was given as a burial anointing. As men were preparing to put Jesus to death, Mary was honoring Him and loving Him before His death. "The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise." Psalm 51:17. Mary's sacrificial gift came from such a heart.

Mary didn't let others' opinion of her stand in the way. Mary didn't care what others thought. Though it was probably socially inappropriate to lavishly anoint Jesus in this home setting, she didn't hesitate to make her devotion and love known to Jesus, as others watched. No one was there to support her actions; but her gift was appreciated by our Lord. Perhaps Jesus was most pleased with the devotion of Mary's heart, and with the attitude she had in presenting it. Jesus called her gift a "beautiful thing" when the others began to ridicule her for wasting such a valuable asset. Love and devotion were the gifts that Jesus most appreciated.

Mary was totally abandoned to her Savior. [iii] She was carried away for Jesus. It wasn't out of duty or because there was anything in it beyond love for Him. Mary's gift was touching and moving to the Lord. The men in these verses thought it was a waste of good money to pour out the perfume. It could have been used for "better" purposes, they said. Sometimes we wonder if our time and sacrifice are worth the effort. Sometimes we may consider prayer time, Bible reading, time spent alone with Jesus, a "waste." We could be doing things for others, even the poor. But Jesus sees. He is pleased with our whole-hearted devotion. Nothing we give to Jesus with love and devotion to Him is ever a waste.

    The Challenge:

How extravagant is my giving to the Lord Jesus?

Do I give without reservation, seeking to love the Lord my God with all my heart, all my soul, all my mind and all my strength? (Mark 12:30)

Do I give sacrificially? When was the last time I gave to my King, as Mary did?

Have I been "carried away," to do something for God, out of pure love and devotion to Him?

What steps can I take this week to give of my time, talents, and treasures to please only my Lord? What would a gift like Mary's look like in my own life?

Wow! I read Connie's post from yesterday, and got the biggest lump in my throat. Whew!

Could somebody post the link to yesterday's PC so everyone else can have the same lump?

I have fallen in love with a one eyed kitty. Jesus also loves the one eyed kitties of the world. She's only declawed in front so I don't know... here's a link about her:

Sisters, I feel led to call on a lay on of hands over Connie in today's post. Post any prayers for her as you feel led.

Father, for some reason You allowed this surgery into Connie's life. We don't know all the ins and outs, but we do know You have filtered everything that comes our way through Your goodness. Lord we ask that You direct the surgeon's hands, that You keep Your protective hand on Connie through the procedure, and that You would touch her body so that she recovers well. Lord, most of all we ask that You would be glorified through Connie. Use her mightily. And we ask that she can return to us soon. In Jesus name, Amen.

Deb, very good lesson! I'd love to join Mary anointing Jesus' feet!

Father, I come lifting up our friend, Connie, to you. Placing her squarely in Your hands, Dear Lord. Knowing that You love her even more than we do and trusting You to bring her safely and successfully through this surgery. And I give You Praise for Who You are and all that You do! In Jesus' Name. Amen.

Now here are my answers to yesterday's PC posts:

Oh, how sweet, Connie! As you wrap in that prayer shaw, I hope you can feel the prayers of us all!

And Nancy, what a neat idea! Also, thank you for your thoughts on the lesson! Hope your meeting on Thursday goes well!

Randy, glad to hear that Koffe had a good time--she needed that!

Deb, glad you got a call from Patty! Praising God that they are doing OK--the weather has not be good for anyone traveling.

Vammie, not silly at all! I loved the song and I just sang it a while ago. I'm sure "Kitty--Boots--Baby" will love it too. ;) BTW, she was sitting on the back porch waiting for me this afternoon when I went out to feed her--but she still hissed when I got near.

Justcookin, Congratulations, Great-Grandma! Oh, my you are a young one! :) What a fun Christmas your family will have this year! :)

Linda, praying you can sleep tonight, Sweetie! Is it pain that's keeping you from sleeping? Or are you like I was the other night and just can't shut your mind down?

Mari, praying for you, Darling! Hugs!

Kaye, we have several projects that need doing, too. And our back porch is one of them. It is concrete and it's breaking up so we're going to have to have a new top put on it. If Hubby and I were 30 yrs. younger, we'd whip out the concrete mixer and have it poured in a day or so. ;) But can't do that anymore and it costs too much to have someone else do it. So guess it won't get done. :(

Treasa, continuing to pray for Kelly! Is there a teaching hospital near her? I've heard that they are more likely to come up with answers to mysterious things. Praying also for your niece!

Hi Chris, I saw you run through--I could almost hear your "giggle". :))

Someone asked about my Golden Girls meeting? We had a great time. As you may remember, when I turned 60 last year they really teased me--brought me dead flowers and prunes, etc. (Great girls! LOL) So I told them I'd get even this year when they hit the big 60. And I tried. I found these weird-looking pigs dressed as chefs (two of them!) at a yard sale. They were each holding a little chalkboard. So I got those and I printed a card to go over the chalkboard that said, "I'm 60. Legally a senior, forever a child." One friend is 60 tomorrow and the other one will be in early June so I gave both of them their presents today. ;) They thought they were cute--go figure! LOL

As I left the luncheon, I got a call from Hubby and he had finally decided to see a Dr. about that eye that he stuck a branch in Sat. So I waited for him at town and went with him. The Dr. says he scratched his cornea and that infection was starting in. So he gave him some meds and wants to see him back on Wed. a.m. So please continue praying for him. Thanks!

    Now I need to run.

    I'm praying for all!

    God Bless! Nite Nite!

Good evening ladies. Don't know if I can get this to post or not - having trouble with computer (or me!) Dear Lord, this evening I lift Connie up to you. I ask that you surround her with your loving arms and care for her through this surgery and recovery. Please be with all the drs, nurses, technicians, etc as they take care of her. Lord I also ask that you be with her family. Comfort them, strengthen them through this. I have a pretty major prayer request this evening. As you probably heard, there was a major earthquate in Chengdu, China. A lady from our church is home on furlough from Chengdu, but no contact has been made with the rest of her team. They were in Chengdu. Please pray for them - for their safety, and also that many new doors would open up because of this quake. They are in a very sensitive area, and are not allowed to be there unles they have a work visa - no missionary visa for them. When we write to her, we have to be so careful in what we say. I am so thankful that the lady from church is home, but my heart is so heavy for the rest of the team there. Well, I'm off to bed. Have another busy day tomorrow. -Mari

    Good evening dear ones.....

Vammie, I purely loved your Jesus loves the little kitties of the world.   Made me smile as I sang along with you.  Big Smile

Deb,  the one-eyed cat looks so sweet.   If she isn't real old perhaps you could have the rear paws declawed.   Or else make sure that someone will be able to trim those nails every couple weeks to keep them short.   Trimming cats nails is so easy and they usually don't fight it like many dogs do.   If you want to bring her here every few weeks I would be glad to do it for you.

Nancy,  how sweet of you to make the shawl for Connie.

Adding my Amen to the prayers for Connie.

Mari,  I will be praying for the rest of the team that is in Chengdu.....and all the people there that have been effected by the quake.   The pics that I have seen have been heartbreaking.

My brain is shutting down so I must go.   Bless you all dear ones and good night.

Hi ladies! We finally have power and internet again! We lost power so many times yesterday and all through the night! But, we have everything up and running again!

Deb, the kitty looks like a sweetheart! Have you called and checked on her?

Mari, how are you feeling? I read your post from yesterday that you have an appointment at 1:00 Tuesday. I'm praying for you.

Dear Lord, I too lift Connie before you and ask you will watch over her and give her peace about the upcoming surgery. I pray for the many medical personnel who will be involved in her case. I pray for wisdom for each of them. Please watch over Connie's family and give them strength during this time as well. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.

I went to the doctor today and had some skin tags tied off/frozen. Ouch! I mentioned that I had been feeling puny and he said there is a stomach bug going around. He said to give it a few more days and if I'm not better I need to call him. I'm praying (begging actually) that I begin to feel better soon!

    Have a great evening!

    Tammy

For Connie- Dear God, please be with Connie throughout this surgery.  May she feel the warmth of your love surrounding her, and may she feel your Spirit bringing her peace.  Please be with her.  Keep her safe, Father, and bring her back feeling better.  Thank you so much for the wisdom you give doctors and have given for so many years, that this kind of surgery is possible.  Bless each hand that ministers to Connie.  Thannk you Jesus for this dear sister.

Praying Tjarriel feels better soon, as well as Eddie's eyeball.  OUCH!!

Praying for all who need a healing touch. That includes my mil who has her white blood cell count back up again, and no energy.  I made 84 hydrangea petals today.

My fake plants died because I did not pretend to water them.

Chris,  is it sinful to laugh at a prayer?   Because I laughed right out loud at yours!   You are just a bit sassy......but 100% accurate.   Praying for Connie also.

Off and running here.  Tom has a quick Dr appt this AM and then we may go to the zoo,  new camera in hand.   Big Smile   We'll see if he feels up to it when he wakes up,  which will be very shortly.   Therefore I must scoot.
