    05/13/08 CS's Chat

    • Well, Bob enjoyed his day off.  He got his last box of chicks for the year out till fall when he will sell some grown birds and ducks.  Then he cut the grass but first we went out for breakfast at IHOP.  They have a wonderful new special this month, Cinnamon Roll French Toast.  Was it ever good!! His next day off we may go have it again!!

    • Thought for the Day- What's right is right, no matter how few people do it. What's wrong is wrong, no matter how many people do it.-Unknown

    • Today is National Crowder Peas Day. This extraordinarily delicious bean is far less commonly seen on menus and supermarket shelves than it once was. Crowder peas are closely related to the more common but smaller field peas, as well as to blackeye peas. Crowders are about the same size as blackeyes, but are overall a light brown and taste different. They're considered a Southern bean, because they need a warmer climate to grow. I'm not sure if this is true, but I've heard that the name comes from the fact that they were planted in cotton fields, where they would crowd in between the cotton rows. As much loyalty as I have to red beans, I would say that I like crowder peas better. You cook them the same way as red beans, but they cook faster and need less fat in the preparation. Don't cook them so long that they start falling apart.  That is my usual problem.

    • Filling the prayers basket and hugs basket!  So glad all the hugs and prayers worked for you, NancyZ! Must have been the extra baskets that were out.   Don’t forget the basket marked Anne and her family!

    • Special hugs and prayers for Cilla, Louise and Maury, Gat and Jeanette, Mabel and Floyd, Grace, Sally, Ruth, Anne, NancyZ and Russell.

    • Remember the group prayer! “Heavenly Father, we ask that you watch over and care for all Cookin’ Seniors and those they love as they go about their day!!”

    • DeeJ-Wonderful to see you back again!!  Glad you had such a good time!! Sorry you didn’t get to beat your brother.  What did you fix???

    • MargaretE-Are you getting a little more adjusted to us yet!! If you have any questions be sure to ask, we have very few secrets!!

    • Mabel-Hugs for you in the baskets!! Did you have a good day at the VA??

    • Rosie-I haven’t watch enough Survivor this year to know either one in the final two, but was glad James won something.  Love your bird!! Is it a Painted Bunting??

    • Cats-Check your mail!! I hope Jason and Kristi reach the final two on DWTS.  I personally don’t care for the little Broadway star or the guy from SA.  Even tho they have improved greatly over the last few weeks and I do admire him for putting on such a performance with a bad arm.

    • Margaret-So glad to hear you are OK!! We were worried that maybe the storms got you!!  BE sure to let us know what you got!! You have us all curious now!!

    • Narniam-Please come out of the lurking mode and introduce yourself to us!!

    • Now it is past my bedtime so will talk tomorrow.

    • Hugs and prayers for all!!

Coffee is ready and it’s just what I needed to do this right…

Top of the morning to everyone.

I was very glad to see MARGARET yesterday after watching the news on those storms.

ZORA~~I've never heard of crowder peas. I do know of a band with that name in it and now I'm wondering if that's what it referenced.

Glad Bob had a productive day on his day off. Did those people ever get the chicks when they went the wrong direction?

How long can chicks sit in the mail without damage to them?

Thank you for all the info and recipes for the mushrooms. A big shout out to NARNIAN and yes we more than double checked to make sure they were not false morels. That is one of the web sites we researched on Sunday. Thank you and I hope you can join us.

A note to all my knitting/crocheting CS friends....I hit the jackpot  at the Saturday morning "city-wide" garages sales this past weekend. A whole bag full of knitting needles for $4.50. There are about 15 pair in there. Another bag of crochet needles for .50!  Now to learn how to crochet. LOL

And NANCY Z~ brand new Stampin' Up stamp sets for $2.

I walked out of that one with a big shopping bag full of craft items.

ROSIE~~That painted bunting is gorgeous! Thanks for sharing. We sure don't see those here. While I was on my route yesterday I saw a Kingfisher and a warbler and it made my day. (Doesn't take much) 'smile'

CATS~~Please wish your DD a very happy birthday from us. I hope her day was complete right down to having fun in the kitchen. Hmmm, I wonder where she gets her cooking skills from.  Wink

BETH~~Thank you. She (DDIL) has worked hard.

If you wake up early with that much energy again you can always come help me.

SHERRY~~I had to laugh when I read about the bugs in the mushrooms as we never soaked the ones we tried on Sunday and now I'm wondering how much "meat" we had with those morels. LOL

NANCY Z~~ I had a feeling that your DH would not be held down. Good for him.

Hang in there on the grossbeak. According to my notes ours were a little late this year.

DOREEN~~It sounds like you are going to have fun playing with that sourdough coming up with all kinds of options.

"Grandma's Brag Book" sounds adorable. Is she a scrapbooker?

LOL at Joey's comments after chowing down.

Something just sounds a little messed up about going to the ball game and eating at Hooters on Mother's Day. Your a good sport, friend.

LEISA~~Question about the bacon grease...Do the mushrooms absorb the grease a lot? Sounds yummy on  a burger!

HELEN~~Hoping your eyes are not giving you fits today.

MERLE~~I'm sorry to hear about your friend, Lorraine.

I'll be watching for that orange cake recipe.

RUTH~~There seems to be a lot of fasting for bloodwork going on with our CS friends. Does this mean you get to eat out after your done at the hospital? 'smile'

Gotta go refill my coffee cup.

    Tippytoes

    ·         Good morning!  Supposedly we have a chance for some rain today, boy I hope so, things are getting really dry again.  Should be a good chance since we have to get out in it to meet my brother for a belated mother’s day lunch.·         Cats, I doubt that you hurt the hummers.  Something in the back of my mind is saying that double strength food is used to attract them when you first put the feeder up.  Bet they enjoyed it while they had it…grin.·         Beth, did you win at cards last night?  I would imagine that you are owed lots more than you owe dinnerwise.  ·         Sherry, you gots me hungry for fried mushrooms now…yum.  Guy Fieri got me going off the deep end wanting fried green tomatoes, now you.  Think it is time for a fried sampler plate.·         Penny, your daughter always serves a menu that makes me want to sit and join y’all.  ·         Nancy, we really only have the one choice, IHOP, in this little town.  There are others that serve breakfast, but they aren’t coffee shops.  After medical tests is the only time we ever go there it seems, or we just have enough tests to space it out right…LOL.  This was my first painted bunting so I was ecstatic, but boy is he a little shy guy, hiding on the other side of the feeder usually.·         Ruth, I’m sorry to hear that Shawn is having a rough time, hope it clears soon…but ever so glad he is calling you.  Fried chicken at Rose’s, roast pork at Penny’s daughter’s, or BLT Chicken Salad at Cats…y’all are adding pounds to this ample body just talking about it.·         Margaret, like everyone I am so glad to hear you are ok, both from the storms and from that terrible accident.  Fate is funny, never know when that extra trip to the bathroom, or running back into the house for a forgotten book will make a difference.  It sounds like you had a lovely time over the mother’s day weekend.  Did you like the exhibit?  It is in San Antonio for the rest of the month and we have talked about going to see it.·         Doreen, what a lovely gift!  I’m sure it was shared with many.  Sandi gave me one when Critter was an only child “Critter’s Little Thank You Book” and it is a prized possession.  She took pictures and added thank you captions.  That Joey is a prize…LOL.·         Leisa, not sure Tippy understands the subtleties, you might have to come right out and say it straight….LOL.·         Margaret!  You are a tease, I scrolled down after your last message to see what came to your house…and you left us hanging.  Sigh.·         Peg, that is an efficient way to make the beds, not the lazy way.  Besides if you didn’t do it that way the mattress wouldn’t have been aired out, etc etc. (I can rationalize anything).·         Merle, I am sorry to hear that Lorraine has lost her battle.  Hugs.  Belated happies to Emily hope she had a fun filled birthday.·         Tippy, you are early … think that you are really posting on next Thursday’s post and the warp speed you go has made you a time traveler.  LOL.  ·         I’m thinking it is breakfast time, now to just decide what it is I want to go with my grits…toast or muffin J  I’m such a creature of habit…sigh.  Hugs and prayers to each of you, because YOU are loved.

    • Tippy, I wish I had seen the kingfisher and the warbler...but I enjoy the little feathered family I have.  There is a new member but can't catch his picture and he doesn't come and stay long enough to find him in the bird book or on Whatbird.com.  Thinking he is a vireo but won't stay put long enough to identify which vireo or verify he is one.
    • Randi, if you are lurking...I too can paint, lol, I just do it in Photoshop.  This was a slightly out of focus wildflower picture I manipulated.

From my email…I have not tried this…
This soup was created by Vic Bergeron, owner of the namesake Trader Vic's chain of restaurants. He said it was based on a dish he ate in New Zealand during World War II.

    Bongo Bongo Soup

    4 cups (1 L) half-and-half or milk
10 oz (280 g) shucked oysters with their liquor
10 oz (280 g) frozen chopped spinach, thawed
2 Tbs (30 ml) melted butter
    1 tsp (5 ml) A-1 steak sauce
Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
    Cayenne pepper to taste
2 Tbs (30 ml) cornstarch (cornflour) dissolved in
    2 Tbs (30 ml) water
1/4 cup (60 ml) heavy cream, whipped

Combine the half-and-half, oysters, spinach, and butter in a saucepan and bring to a simmer. Puree in an electric blender and return to the pot. Add the steak sauce, salt, pepper, cayenne, and the cornstarch mixture and bring to a boil, stirring frequently. Divide the soup between 4 to 6 bowls and top each with a dollop of whipped bream. Place under a preheated broiler until the cream is lightly browned. Serves 4 to 6.

Morning rays of sunlight already ooze with a simmering of the heat to come later today. Our usual wind is all that will make the sweltering humidity bearable. Took a couple dogs to the veterinarian for shots yesterday and a sick kitten DH rescued from the highway.

68° with 83% humidity and we will swelter at 94°

    Good morning, CS.

I think we will have a "normal" May day, by jove.

ZORA, that was a tasty breakfast at IHop. We have one in our town, too. And, I live near the so-called downtown of my little city, and truthfully we could eat lunch and dinner at a different place for a couple of weeks. When we moved here it was considered out in the country. It will be nice to plan little excursions on Bob's day off each week.

Hi, BETH, bet it's golfing, again, eh?

TIPPY, well, you hit a jackpot. Those were great finds. As for the mushrooms, protein is found in many goodies.

ROSIE, I would join you for breakfast, but I will skip the grits. But, I am just going on Russell's evaluation, I guess I should try them myself. We had rhubarb sauce on toast, this morning.

CILLA, I guess I would be a lousy southerner---that soup doesn't appeal to me, either. Now, beans, that's a different story. We probably fix them differently, but love them all.

RUTH, may those tests reveal something and hopefully you will get help. Cracker Barrel or IHop, they're both good for breakfast.

Mornin', BEVERLY, we will be happy with 60's today.

Quiet morning, and then it will be a perm this afternoon.

Adding hugs and prayers to the basket, this morning.

    Nancy Z.

    Re: 05/13/08 CS's Chat

    Good Morning.

Zora I got your E-Mail thanks, I love it. DWTS was great last night.

Rosie thanks I was so afraid that somehow I might be hurting the Hummingbirds. I have been getting tons at the feeder and have to fill it twice a day. I am waiting to see a roly poly one. LOL

Margaret I am glad to see that you are safe from the storms, we are in for some more rain today. This has been a really rainy month.

Tippy thanks for the Happy Birthday wishes for my DD, we had a real nice time and the dinner was delicious. And no she doesn't get her kitchen talents from me, I make more mistakes in the kitchen than I care to admit to. LOL By the way I still have all my knitting needles and I haven't knitted in almost 25 years, wonder if I could still do it.

My sisters were suppose to come home yesterday but they stopped and spend the night in Tennessee, will probably be home sometime today.

Cilla I guess I am a lousy Southern too because the soup didn't appeal to me either.

Good Morning Beverly, Ruth, Beth, Nancy Z and all the ones that check in later. I will TTYL. Have a nice day.

    Re: 05/13/08 CS's Chat

    Good mid morning,

No golfing for me today. We are waiting for the people from Culligan to come put in a water softner and a reverse osmosis water thing. Don't know what you call the osmosis thing but guess it makes the water good. As long as it is hooked up to my ice machine and water in the door of the fridge I don't care what it does.

Had a good time at dinner last nite and then we played Pegs and Jokers. The one extra couple had never played before and the guy is so confused I don't know if he knows what hit him last nite. We'll get him going pretty soon.

I just downloaded a crochet pattern that looks like I can work on it in the car while traveling. I get bored just sitting so try to take along things to do while riding. There is always someone to give the crocheted things to.

Rosie, that bird was so pretty yesterday. We don't seem to have many birds except morning doves that coo constantly. Have a couple of hummers that visit often also. And yes you were right, make the hummer water a little stronger in the spring to attract themto the feeders.

Tippy, you got a steal at that garage sale with your craft items. I have so many crochet hooks because I was always loosing them somewhere in the house. Found them when we moved and have been taking care of them better.

Ruth, good luck on your blood tests and enjoy the breakfast. I like going out for breakfast but we don't to often.

Well my guys have arrived so better go see what is going on.

    Beth

    Good morning Everyone –

The sun is out, the air is clearer, and the eyes are as good as they’re gonna’ get, so it’s all good.  Yesterday we had a high of 58; in a few days they say it will be 103.  Bah!
