    JELL-O Trivia

Jack Benny's top-rated radio show did not break away for commercials. Instead, his announcer, Don, incorporated speeches about Jello into the program at appropriate places, to Jack's feigned comic annoyance. Perhaps the earliest musical reference to Jell-O was in the lyrics of "Cockeyed Optimist" from the musical South Pacific (Rodgers and Hammerstein, 1949) when Nellie sings "I could say life is just a bowl of Jell-O". Forty years later, it was mentioned in the film Ghostbusters 2. When Winston is reminded that a supernatural 'goo' resembles Jell-O, he remarks that he hates Jell-O. Peter Venkman responds, "There's always room for Jell-O". In the popular American TV version of the UK series The Office (2005) Jim Halpert has encased Dwight Schrute's and Andy Bernard's office supplies in Jell-O. In the original UK-based show (2001) Tim Canterbury did the same to Gareth Keenan, though they referred to the dessert by the common UK term "jelly".In the 1960s, the cast of the popular sitcom Hogan's Heroes did a commercial with Carol Channing featuring the gang having Jell-O for dessert. Samantha Carter of Stargate SG-1 has been seen to enjoy blue Jell-O on numerous occasions. Jell-O powder was a primary ingredient in the green slime for the 1980s TV hit, You Can't Do That on Television. Eric Reed Boucher, the lead singer of the punk rock band Dead Kennedys, used Jello Biafra as his stage name.

    Commercials

Comedian Bill Cosby is usually associated with Jell-O and, more famously, Jell-O pudding as he has appeared in many commercials promoting both. Shows like MAD TV and SNL parody Cosby, using Jello references like "pudding pop". In the 1960s, the cast of the popular sitcom Hogan's Heroes did a commercial with Carol Channing featuring the gang having Jell-O for dessert.

    The Jell-O Belt

is a colloquial term in American English that refers to the parts of the western United States with large populations of Latter-day Saints. In academic literature, the area is more commonly called the "Mormon culture region" or the "Mormon Corridor." It has also been referred to as the Book of Mormon belt as a cultural reference to the Bible belt of the southeastern United States.

It generally refers to a roughly-defined area of land centered on Utah. The Jell-O Belt extends northward through western Wyoming and eastern Idaho to Yellowstone National Park. The belt reaches south through San Bernardino, California and Mesa, Arizona. In Arizona, the belt extends throughout all of the eastern part of the state, almost to the U.S.-Mexico border. Some of the larger cities with a significant Latter-day Saint population include Las Vegas, Nevada; Henderson, Nevada; Redlands, California; Riverside, California; Anaheim, California; and Temecula, California.

The name "Jell-O Belt" references the stereotype that Mormons supposedly have an affection for Jell-O (a gelatin-based food), particularly when served with shredded carrots, or blended with canned fruit and set in molds. Green (lime) Jell-O is the most stereotypically Mormon of Jell-O flavor-colors, probably because lime was once the best-selling flavor of Jell-O in Utah.  Jell-O has been designated Utah's official state snack food.[1]

    JELL-O MUSEUM

As of 2008, LeRoy, New York, is still known as the home of Jell-O and has the only Jell-O Museum in the world located on the main road through the small town. Jell-O was manufactured here until General Foods closed the plant in 1964 and relocated manufacturing to Dover, Delaware.

At the museum, visitors can learn about the history of the dessert from its inception. Visitors, starting on East Main Street, follow Jell-O Brick Road, whose stones are inscribed with the names of former factory employees. The museum offers looks at starting materials for Jell-O, such as sturgeon's bladder and calve's hoofs, and various molds.

    Lemon Fluff
From Mrs. Kitching's Smith Island Cookbook

1 3-oz. package lemon jello (I used lime)
    1 cup water
    1 13-oz. can evaporated milk
    1 cup powdered sugar
    2 Tbsp lemon juice
    vanilla wafers

Chill evaporated milk. Dissolve jello in one cup water. (my recommendation: use hot water) Let gel slightly. Whip evaporated milk (after chilling) until stiff. To milk, add sugar, lemon juice, and jello. Line shallow baking dish with vanilla wafers. Pour jello mixture over top. Crumble wafers on top and refrigerate until firm.

I do believe that it was a very good idea to discontinue some of these flavors.  Somehow Coffee Jello justs sounds bad...  I did like however the sparkling white grape!

    This is my favorite:

    Tangy Apple Salad

    1 pkg. cherry Jell-O

    1 c. boiling water

    1 c. cold water

    1 pkg. lemon Jell-O

    1 1/4 c. boiling water

    2/3 c. sour cream

    1 Tbsp. sugar

    2 tsp. lemon juice

    2 c. chopped apples

    1 c. chopped grapes

    1/4 c. pecan pieces

    1/3 c. Miracle Whip

Dissolve cherry Jell-O in 1 c. boiling water; add cold water.  Pour 2/3 c. of the cherry Jell-O into a 1 1/2 quart mold; chill till set.  Set aside remaining cherry Jell-O at room temperature.

Dissolve lemon Jell-O in 1 1/4 c. boiling water; set aside to cool (Do not put in fridge).  Mix together sour cream, salad dressing, pecans, grapes and apples.  Stir in lemon Jell-O.  Put bowl of lemon Jell-O with additions in frig until slightly set.  When slightly set, stir and pour lemon Jell-O mixture on top of first layer of cherry Jell-O.  Top with remaining room-temperature cherry Jell-O.  Chill until firm.  Unmold onto serving plate.

    Enjoy!

Twinkle, oh-oh, don't even own a Jel-O mold, have never made one, only in parfait glasses that I got from the Goodwill store for ten cents.  So I will learn something here.

As I was a child of the 50's-60-s, jello was a homemaker's pride.  My poor Mom, bless her heart, tried so many jello molds.  She could never unmold them successfully, like, 1/2 would stick in the mold, the top layer would stick in a 3-layer mold, etc.  Drum roll every time she tried to unmold jello.  To the rescue, my Aunt (her younger sister), who made perfect jell-o molds.  Standing joke in the family, but Mom took it with unusual good humor and joked that "at least she was famous for something."

Will look thru some of my TOH annuals and some old cookbooks, lydia.

I have subbed peach  for the lemon and it is also very good.

     Annie’s Lemon-Pudding Cheesecake (no bake)

1 1/2 cups graham wafer crumbs (reserve 1/4 cup)
1/3 cup melted butter or margarine
    1/2 tsp. cinnamon
    1/4 cup sugar

Mix together and press into a 9 x 9” pan.

1 (8 oz) pkg cream cheese
    1 pkg. lemon instant pudding
    2 cups milk
    1 pkg Dream Whip

Soften cream cheese, blend with1/2 cup milk.  Add 1 1/2 cups milk and pudding mix.  Beat slowly with beaters just until well mixed, about 1 minute.  Do not over mix.  Pour into graham cracker crush at once.   Top with prepared Dream Whip.  Sprinkle the reserved crumbs onto the top.
