Question about slicing bread

Is there a tool that would help to slice bread evenly from top to bottom and end to end?  I am getting some bread from a bakery and they don't have a slicer so I am gonna massacre the loaf myself.  I have never been good at slicing bread and sure could use any tips or gimmicks that you have.  I'm hoping someone says that Bed, Bath and Beyond has a tool to help me out.

Yes they have them.  You need a bread slicer guide.

There is a wooden boxlike thing (not sure where to buy them) that I've seen that has slots along the sides so you can just cut down to make even slices.

 

If you have an electric meat slicer that adjusts to the proper width, that might work.

 

I bake a lot of bread and my favorite thing to slice it with is the old, famous Ginsu knife.  They're not good for much else, but do a wonderful job of slicing bread.

I used to be bad at slicing bread, but then I got a new bread knife (a fairly good one) which I absolutely only use for bread and tomatoes.  I know some people who claim that serrated knives never go dull, but my experience says those people are mistaken, and a sharper knife makes a big difference.

I have seen a  unit with blade and handle that is premeasured for bread thickeness.   Sort of like a bow saw.  You gave me an idea.  I have a slicer machine and I'm thinking that could be used.  But do I want the whole loaf sliced?

SIL likes an electric knife.

My dad used to like an electric knife for cutting bread too & somehow he had the patience to wait just a bit for the bread to cool down some...it's been awhile since I've ate hot bread right out of the oven!!!!

I always use an electric knife also....

A really good knife helps.

a really sharp, long serrated knife ( i have some Kitchen Aid ones ) and use a rapid, back and forth sawing motion. sometimes it helps to turn the loaf on its side.

You have gotten a lot of good hints here so far. Mine is to let the bread "age" for a day before trying to slice it...right out of the oven might taste delicious, but is really hard to slice after the end slice. I have one of those box slicing guides and it works perfectly along with a really good sharp serrated knife.
