HL Topic of the week 5/19 to 5/25 7 Steps to a Better Body

Stick-with-it strategies to shed pounds and get strong--guaranteed!

By Caroline Bollinger , Caroline Bollinger is Prevention's fitness editor.

Ready to start an exercise program? Just making the commitment is an amazing first step. To ensure success, here are seven surprisingly simple, research-backed strategies that can help you overcome the most common roadblocks to weight loss. They'll motivate you through the ups and downs of any new workout routine, so you'll stick to it and reach all your fitness goals.

    1. Learn what "build slowly" means
Be realistic about your abilities. Experts say to progress gradually, but most of us don't know how to translate that into real-life terms--especially those who used to be active but have gotten out of the habit. "Formerly fit people are surprised and frustrated when they find themselves winded after a walk around the park," says Madelyn Fernstrom, PhD, director of the Weight Management Center at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

If you haven't worked out in years, start with a manageable goal, like 20 minutes of walking or yoga twice a week for 2 weeks. When you're ready to progress, either bump your number of workouts to 3 a week or increase their length to 25 or 30 minutes--but don't try both at the same time. Taking on too much too soon can leave you achy and discouraged; that's why experts recommend you change only one thing at a time--the frequency, duration, or intensity of your workouts. If your new cardio workout still leaves you gasping for air, don't be afraid to slow your pace--you should be slightly breathless but able to talk. You'll be more likely to follow your program if you exercise at a comfortable level, according to White's research. Strength-training will get easier, too. A new study from Ohio University found that muscles adapt to resistance exercises after a mere 2 weeks.

    2. Keep an activity log
Hands down, lack of time is the number one reason we struggle to keep exercising. Yet studies find we may have more time than we think. Women ages 45 to 70 spend an average of 28 hours a week in sedentary activities outside of their jobs, such as reading and Web surfing, according to a University of Oklahoma study--ample time to find at least 2 1/2 hours a week for exercise. Keep a log of everything you do for 3 days, suggests Jennifer White, PhD, an assistant professor of fitness and wellness at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Then find ways to sneak in activity. Time in front of the TV can double as a stretching session, while a cell phone headset allows you to power walk while you're on hold with the credit card company.

    3. Prepare for post-workout hunger
Exercise can boost metabolism for a few hours, but burning more calories can increase your appetite. To avoid the munchies after exercising (and eating back the calories you just burned), try to schedule workouts so that you have a meal within an hour afterward. Or save part of an earlier meal to eat during that time, says Fernstrom. Snacks combining carbohydrates and protein--like a fig bar and fat-free milk, or cantaloupe and yogurt--are best to refuel muscles and keep you from feeling ravenous later on. If you still feel hungry, wait 10 to 15 minutes before eating more to make sure you're physically, not just mentally, hungry. Distract yourself while you wait: Keep your hands occupied by cleaning out a drawer or giving yourself a manicure.

    4. Be alert to prime drop-out time
About half of new exercisers quit in the first few months, research has found. But support, either one-on-one or in a group, can keep your momentum going. "Getting help specific to your particular issues is key," says Fernstrom. If you struggle with exercise, try finding (or even forming) a walking group at work or at your local Y. If you're goal-focused, signing up for an event, like walking a half or full marathon, can be the carrot you need to stay on track.

    5. Take breaks
Missed a workout? Don't worry: Your waistline won't notice. Brown University scientists found that people on a 14-week weight loss program who took occasional breaks from working out lost an average of 7 pounds--about the same amount as those who never missed a day. "Just pick up again as soon as you can," says Fernstrom. In the long run, it's the habit, not the individual days that matter. For help, sign up for a weekly e-mail health newsletter: People who did exercised 14% more and ate better than those who didn't get inbox reminders, reports a University of Alberta study. (To join our free Best of Prevention newsletter, which covers health, weight loss, and fitness three times a week, go to prevention.com/newsletters.)

    6. Splurge--then get up and move
One date with a pint (or even two) of ice cream won't doom your weight loss unless you let guilt keep you off track. In fact, French researchers discovered that obese exercisers who bicycled for 45 minutes 3 hours after a high-fat meal metabolized more stored belly fat than those who cycled on an empty stomach. Although bingeing on cookies before your next workout obviously won't help you slim down, the study is a good reminder that not all is lost when you stray from your diet--in fact, your body may even kick it up a gear to help with damage control. Instead of giving up when a celebratory dinner with friends sends your calorie count through the roof, suggest a postmeal stroll or dancing. The party moves away from the table, and the evening can continue with a fun activity that helps you toward your weight loss goal.

    7. Put the treadmill in a pretty room
If a workout bores you, don't do it. "Research shows that if you enjoy an exercise, you'll stay with it, so keep trying activities until you find something you like," suggests White. Or jazz up a ho-hum workout with music or audiobooks. Just don't try to exercise in some dark, dreary corner of the house. "So many women make the mistake of consigning the treadmill to the basement," White says. You'll be more likely to use exercise equipment if it's in a pleasant space with good light and in easy reach of the radio and TV, like the family room. It's worth investing in a home exercise space that's both functional and attractive, whether by spending a little extra on a treadmill you won't mind showing off or buying pretty baskets to store your workout DVDs and dumbbells.

Re: HL Topic of the week 5/19 to 5/25 7 Steps to a Better Body

Morning everyone!   Though we had a long weekend, it seemed to fly by.   Yesterday we spent 5 hours in the car, drove up North (where there is still some snow on the ground!) to check out which campsite we wanted to stay in for our vacation in August.   It was a nice ride, but even I'd had enough after about 4 hours.   We stopped briefly for lunch (McDonald's, and I made horrible choices), then again to walk around the campground (cold and how could I forget about black fly season  LOL), but that was about it.      Looking foward to our vacation, even though by time it gets here it will be that summer is almost over.

Struggled with my eating all weekend.  I derailed myself on Friday night and it was a downhill skid from there.   Facing another long weekend this weekend has me a little nervous.    At least I'm back to the gym today, and will have no reason not to get there 3 days this week.

Reposting this from the weekend, thanks to everyone who asked and sent emails about Jake's move up day:

Friday's Kindergarten move up day went great, Jake had a wonderful time and is excited about his new school.   Me, not so much.   The presentation was so dumbed down, they weren't prepared for any questions, and they've pretty much been forced to add K to their school and it doesn't seem like they are ready for it.    The principal went on and on about what carpets she picked for the classrooms for 15 mins of an hour presentation, and then seemed surprised when parents voiced objections to putting their (some just barely) 5 year olds on buses with kids up to 6th grade.     With no bus monitor, just the driver.    No thanks.

Muril, glad mom got home safely   :)   I'd forgotten about you homeschooling.   It's something we've talked about with Jake, but he's so behind socially...   And we just can't afford private school and if we could, they are all religious based, which Tim would not ok.    Hope you enjoyed the rest of your Sunday!

Dusta & Muril, my sister and her bf both had Lasiks done, she watched them to his and it took her 4 years to build up the courage to get hers done after that!

Dusta, I've never seen the WW crackers either, just the cereal and the yogurt.   I do think it's cheating a little bit how they dump extra fiber into their products to make the points low.   That's why they made the fiber cap, people were putting fiber on things like ice cream to knock down the points.   LOL

Waving good morning to all who check in, will be back in a bit, going to fold some laundry and by then Jake should be up for the day.

Re: HL Topic of the week 5/19 to 5/25 7 Steps to a Better Body

Good morning. Never thought I would be one that enjoyed any kind of exercise. I pushed myself when I use to walk until I finally missed it if for some reason I couldn't. Now I love riding the bike, I will admit in July, August, January, February I don't love it as much but.............. it has been worth it.

Jolene I didn't really give the correct info ww was whole wheat. I am with you on the fiber thing, WW has ice cream bars that have around 110 carlores and one 1, the fudge bar I buy has 40 calories also 1 point. Does that make sense? Don't think so. Same with WW yogurt. I hear women at WW say well it is the fiber. They can think that all they want it is still "calories count." Okay I have spouted off enough.  At some of the meetings when fiber is discussed some of them still don't know you can't go over 4 grams fiber in a food.

    Hi everyone.

Hi Dusta!   :)  I completely understand!   You all watched me stress over my first visit to the gym, watched me grow into getting my own membership, and now actually missing it when I don't get there!    :)    That would have been a totally bizarre notion to me 2 years ago   LOL   Good for you, and keep it up!    You are in inspiration    :)

Yep, that's what I mean, I don't want fiber in my food that isn't naturally occuring.   It's right up there with my second pet peeve of WW, pushing "fake" foods because they are low in points.   The faux cakes made with cool whip & Diet soda, etc.   I'd rather make a real cake and eat a smaller piece than load up on tons of fake food.       That's why I cancelled my WW magazine subscription and very rarely make an WW recipes.   Cooking Light and Eating Well both manage to make tasty food without a ton of fake products, and most of the time it's centered around portion control which is what you want to learn for long term success anyway!

Oops, sorry, I hope I don't hurt myself stepping off my soapbox.    LOL

    Good Morning! Cool

Jolene, great topic, I will read it when I get back from Miss Nancy's. :)  I think the cateract surgery is amazing. :) Of course, I like watching things like that- the fact that it is low invasive, no stitches and one doesn't have to be put to sleep is great in my book. Wondering if they use the same technique for lasik.  I may get lasik when my eyes stop changing or maybe just take the plunge and get my distance improved and use reading glasses.

Dusta, I am with you on the fake stuff. Didn't a certain company make a bread that had tree bark in it for the fiber. Ick. Ick!  But, if it has nuts, seeds, flaxseeds, etc. ...it is ok in my book.Big Smile Hope it is nice enough for you to get a bike ride in today. :)

Off to Miss Nancy's in a few, so better get off here and get going. :)

     Good Morning!!

great subject this week!  I completely agree with two things - 1, find what you like & you'll stick with it. and 2, increase slowly. Too much too fast will burn you out, cause injury, etc. It's frustrating as we all want results *now* but it's a lifestyle change & 6 months from now you still want to be doing an exercise you love.

Hopefully Mrs. Jen will join us today :-)  I can't wait to hear how her honeymoon was. Well, not the specifics.... LOL!!!

Muril - glad you had a good trip bringing your mom back. Have a good day with Miss Nancy!

Dusta - hope it's nice today for you to get out on the bike. I know how much you enjoy it :-)

Jolene - glad things went well for Jake & Kindergarten. Hopefully they will be ready for the K classes, like you said, seems like they didn't put much thought into parts of it.  We're like you - not crazy about the current public school system in our area, but we'll try it. If it' doesn't work for us we'll have to figure something out when the time comes. There are a few private schools in the area - one catholic, one plain ol' school (expensive!!!) and a montesory (sp?!?). Don't know if I'd homeschool, I guess I'd have to look into that more if the time comes.  I'm glad you had a nice drive up north - sorry about the flies & mcdonald's. I remember the flies!!!!!! ugh. We only have gnats here at the moment. This week is a new week, start fresh with food choices :-)

We had a nice weekend - spent most of it around the house getting a few things crossed off our to-do list.  Seemed to go by fast. I was able to get out to the park for a walk saturday & sunday, got a bit of sun also. A cross between tan & sunburn :-)

Hope everyone has a great day!!

Hello Muril, Jolene, Dusta and everyone else! :)

Jolene, I don't know what dh and I would do if we had kids school age.....the public schools around here are not my choice, but with the private schools I would be afraid that they wouldn't get a good enough education. I went to a religious private school, and I don't feel like I received a very good education myself......IMO.....

We were able to go to the fitness center twice last week!!! Yeah!!! I wanted to go a third time, but dh was to tired after he got off work.....I have thought about going of an evening, but I don't like going by myself.....I guess that is something I need to work on......

My allergies are going crazy today!!!! We were outside all day Saturday (in the wind), woke up yesterday with an earache, and then it has went into a cold.....Super Angry I will have to hit WM up for some medicine.....$$$$.....again!!!!

Muril I'm glad you mom and Miss Nancy are doing well! :)

    Waving to everyone!

Re: HL Topic of the week 5/19 to 5/25 7 Steps to a Better Body

    Good morning.

I’m back after a very restful and interesting vacation.  DH had a nice cookout/bonfire to celebrate my b’day, and I got some interesting gifts.  Ol’ Prince got me a jack for my truck.  Yes, indeedy, I needed one of those.  DH bought me a shrub, to replace one that froze to death.  Lil’ Prince got me some cute cow and pig carvings for my office.  My SILs brought a bracelet, and I got a bottle of tequila. A gift card from JoAnn Fabrics.  And cash.  All in all, a pretty good haul!  When I arrived in my office, my staff had decorated with black balloons, black silk roses, and a towel on the floor that looked like a grave, complete with gravestone and plastic bugs….the towel was “pushing up daisies”.  I am keeping the decorations until I can get my camera here tomorrow.  Apparently, 50 is “old”.  Ha ha

We brought our camper up to the campground on Friday night, and it was a very nice weekend.  We headed to EMS on Saturday for new hiking boots, socks and orthotics.  Nothing worse than aching feet when you’re 4000 feet up!  Plus it’s dangerous to have boots that aren’t supportive, particularly when you’re heading down the mountain, and you’re already tired and muscles are shaking!  We did hike on Sunday, a short climb, and relatively small elevation gain, but it was a beautiful day.  The boots felt great, and we had beautiful weather.  DH got nice photos of Mt. Washington…still covered in snow.

When I got on the scales this a.m. (one eye closed, fingers crossed, and praying), I was pleasantly surprised to see that I had maintained all week…. pretty impressive considering we went out for Thai food on Wednesday (coconut curry shrimp, and 2 glasses of wine), plus b-day ice cream cake all week!  So back to healthier eating this week, and there’s 3 ½ weeks left till I have to get into that dress!  I should be all set, but if someone wants to light candles and pray, I’d be OK with that.

I guess Ol’ Princes ex-GF is still sniffing around occasionally.  Grrrr.  Lil’ Prince wisely advised him,  ”Women are like dogs, if they bite once, they’ll bite again!”   DH thought that was hilarious.  He would.

I wonder how much of the honeymoon we’re going to hear about ?  * wink, wink*

Jolene, where are you staying in August?  The black flies were outrageous this weekend.  We went through almost a whole can of Off!

Hi to Dawn (got your card…you’re welcome), and Muril (sounds like a long day ahead, thanks for remembering me).  Dusta, those WW fake foods always seem so chalky-tasting and grainy to me.  Yuk.  I’d almost rather go without!

Back to work…..not too bad, but I’ll be here all day and then some!  PammieJ.

Re: HL Topic of the week 5/19 to 5/25 7 Steps to a Better Body

Back from the gym, got into a good groove so did 45 mins instead of 30.  Cut into my laundry folding time, but oh well, it will still be there tonight.   Hey, did I just put myself first?   Somebody write that down!

Muril, I know Sis' bf's eye procedure had to do with cutting a flap off his eye, zapping it and laying the flap back down.    Sis' didn't.     I also know that bf is also having to wear his glasses for some stuff again less than 10 years later...    Bleh on the tree bark!    Hope you have a great day with Miss Nancy!

Hi Dawn   :)  How was your appt friday?    Gotta love when you get to the weeklies, time seems to speed up!     One reason we've rented and put off buying is because we're so unsure of where we want Jake to be for school.   This way, if we hate this district, we can move to another one without trying to sell a house in this bad market, etc.     My sister's district, and where I went to school, is excellent, but that puts Tim 45 mins from work, and that's hard with gas prices so high!      Ouch on the tanburn   :(     Tim always does that the first nice few days of the year, I'm lucky in that I never burn   :)   Advantage of being Italian, and I didn't get the hairy arms, so that's a score   LOL

Hey Jet!   good for you for getting there 2x in a week.   Ideally I'd like to do 3, my insurance would kick me back some cash if I could keep it up, but I'd just be happy to do 2x a week consistently.    Jake's off Monday and the last day of school is 6/18, so I need to get a game plan in place or I will miss the whole summer like I did last year.      Really, I don't know if there's any end-all-be-all answer to education these days, especially with the whole "no child left behind" bs.   If you want to get my sister riled, ask her what she thinks it's done to kid's educations and be prepared to hear her swear like a sailor!

Pammie, I'm an idiot.   I got your bday card back on Saturday, I forgot about the postage increase   :(     I guess it was better than you having to pay a penny for the priviledge of opening your bday card!     Glad you had a great week, and LOL on your coworkers.   I got a tiara for my 35th, and I still pull it out and wear it once in a while.   Happy belated bday from me   :)

We are camping at Covered Bridge again, on the Kanc.   From 8/5 to 8/8, and we may try and sneak in another weekend in July, depending on how long my sister is in her cast.    We use her truck and she can't drive til her cast comes off.

Well, unless I'm picking Jake up in a towel, I'd better get dressed.   No clue on what's for lunch today, extremely windy so I believe I'll be cooking inside.    Need to do a fridge cleanout and then make a grocery list/menu so I can shop tomorrow.

Funny story.   After we ate I asked Jake if he need to use the bathroom before we headed through the mountain.   He looks at me with a big smile and says, "No thanks, I'm gonna pee on a rock.  You should wait and pee on a rock too, it's fun".    When I explained outdoor potty breaks weren't as much fun for girls, he said, "Oh momma, that's so sad!"    LOL
