Anyone here had lithotripsy done?? Got questions

I just had one done on Monday.  They put me out and it took about one hour. I told the Dr I didn't want a stent put in.  Ever since I got home on Monday night my bladder hurt, I feel like I have to pee so bad like every 10min.  Getting worse today!  I called the dr office to tell them and I'm still waiting to hear from them.  Question is would I know if he put a stent in after I said no.  How would you be able to tell- I thought they were very painful.  Its just my bladder in pain, so bad I can hardly sit down, and of coarse running to bathroom every 5-10 min.  I don't know if I can do this all day.    Lin-frapp

I don't know what procedure you had but it sounds like you have a UTI

Don't you think your physician would have told you what was done?  I'm fairly sure physicians don't just willy-nilly put things in or take things out.  Prior to the procedure, you had to sign an informed consent.  Where I work, you have to state in your own words wht you think is being done.  This is done after you meet with the surgeon who explains risks and benefits of the procedure and intended outcome.  You also should have met with an anesthesiologist or an anesthetist if you were "put out."

I did meet with the anesthesiologist, and signed papers on that. For one thing I fought with them about the tube down my throat.  I told the dr 2 wks before No stint, because he said he likes to put them in and they are very painful. So that's all I remember signing in hospital on Monday.  You know when your having horrible pain in the bladder all kinds of things start going through this brain of mine.  I just wish they would hurry and call me back, its been 4hrs now sense I called.  I just ran over to see his nurse and donate some pee for a check. It shouldn't take this long. Will be in for a long night. She said drs are all out for the day and not sure if she can get someone to check.   Here I thought I would be suffering from kidney pain-and I'm not.  Lin-frapp

Do you happen to have an immediate care/walk in type clinic near you.  If you don't hear back from Dr. soon I'd go there and give them another urine sample, they can culture it and give you the results right away.

Did you have lithotripsy to break up a kidney stone?

If so, the broken pieces may be getting ready to pass.  I always get bladder symptoms like you are describing when I'm about to pass a stone (any size, even "sand").  There is not much the docs can give me to relieve it since it is not an infection.  The symptoms end immediately when the stone(s) pass.

I can't remember right this second what the bladder calming meds are that I normally take....Pyridium and ??  The Pyridium gives me bright orange pee, I do remember that.  I haven't had a stone in so long (knock on wood) that I've forgotten the other med.  It keeps bladder spasms away.  But as I said, not much helps but drinking a lot and passing the stone pieces.  I know very well that "climb the wall" feeling beforehand!

I hope a doctor is at least on call for you today.  There are drug store test strips you can use to check for blood in urine (a sure sign of stones moving) and infection.  "Azo" is one co. that makes an infection test strip.  The Hemastix (for blood) I've usually had to get at a specialty pharmacy, from behind the counter (and they're expensive).  That pee sample you dropped off for analysis should be looked at by the nurse, at least, & checked for these things, too.  That's routine.

Hang in there & I'm sorry.  If this was lithotripsy & the stone pieces are on the move out, it may all be over soon.  Drink a lot, and be sure to strain your pee to see if pieces of a stone have come out.

if it is kidney stone (which was my first thought too) it helps if you drink something like cranberry juice or water with lots of lemon juice. the acid helps break up the stones.....do not drink milk or milk products! They are the main cause of kidney stones!!

Summer I have to agree.. it sounds like stones/sand on the move..it has been a while for me too but if you had a stent you would KNOW it...they are VERY uncomfortable..and that pain is further up towards the kidney... but the pain of passing the stones is enough to make you want to go every 5 minutes.. keep straining your pee bet you are passing sand.....

You are probably having bladder spasms as well as stone fragments in the bladder. I've had both. The stent is put in to keep your ureter from swelling, and you are probably asking for more trouble having not had one put in. They can be very uncomfortable, my first one was, but subsequent stents have not proven bothersome at all. I'm sorry you're in such pain. Push fluids. Bladder spasms have been described as worse than labor pains, and you can get an antispasmodic medication for them. See or talk to someone sooner rather than later. I know how painful this situation can be.

Jet, I must go to a different urologist or have a different type of stone.  Cranberry juice is a no-no for someone with calcium oxalate stones, since cranberries contain oxalate.  Many berries, seeds, nuts, and flat green leaf foods (other than iceberg lettuce) can be high in that.

"The jury is out" on products containing calcium for people with this type of stone -- that's what I was told last fall.  One school of thought says that less calcium is better, but the other says that women with higher calcium intake have fewer calcium oxalate stones....something about the calcium being bound up & passing through the gut without causing stone problems.  I read the report but I forget the exact wording.

The citric acid in lemon juice does seem to help some people with calcium oxalate stones, per my uro's nurse.  But if you ask my dentist, he'd rather I not drink lots of fresh lemon juice!  Can't win.

Well the nurse just called back and said its no infection!  I have been passing fine little gravel, so tiny its hard to save for the Dr.  This is all new stuff for me.  I'm trying to drink more but its hard I'm not big on drinking a lot.  My pain is low front, in pelvic area- not horrible pain just a very sore discomfort and running to pee every 5-10min. feels like my insides are coming out when I go. The nurse said she didn't know why its hurting so bad if the little fine stuff is coming out. She told me to call in morning if I'm still hurting---Boy this is going to be a long night! She told me to take the oxy-cod and just drink.  So  with my luck I'll pass out from the pill and pee myself.  Lin-frapp

Yep, it sure sounds as if the lithotripsy results are kicking in, if you are passing little pieces.  Better than passing the big stone, but that's cold comfort at this point.

If you have to catch the gravel, you can "go" into something & then strain it through a paper coffee filter.  If the doc really needs those pieces to test (which he probably does, if you've never had a stone before).

I think a pain pill & a big nap sound great at this point.  The worst of it may be over when you wake up.  I doubt you'll have an accident while sleeping -- just some much-needed rest.

Hang in there & good luck!
