    DOES ANYONE LIVE IN PITTSBURGH??

My DH is going for a seminar in Pittsburgh in Aug and I get to go along.  Can anyone tell me what attractions there are there and what might the weather be like in Aug! I have never been there and I 'm actual;ly quite excited to go.

    Some questions first:

When exactly in August are you coming? (so I know whether to suggest the Regatta)

    Downtown Pittsburgh? Or suburb?

Will you have a rental car?

If so, how far out of Pittsburgh are you willing to drive?

Anything you don't do - like water park, etc.?

I am not from Pittsburgh, but I like the incline and Station Square.  I LOVE driving through the one tunnel going in to Pittsburgh from the north. You are just in your usual tunnel, and all of a sudden, the world opens up to that beautiful city. I am amazed every single time! (Doesn't take much to impress me, I guess.) Maybe a native can tell you which tunnel.

August is usually hot and humid, but hey, this is Pennsylvania. Last week we had 40 and 95 in the same week.

Re: DOES ANYONE LIVE IN PITTSBURGH??

Hi Sharon, I grew up in Pittsburgh, now live about 50 miles east, in S. Central Pa.  There are a lot of interesting things to see around Pgh.  Go on a ride on the rivers on one of the boats at the Point.  I forget the names of the boats, they are like paddlewheels, and you can tour the 3 rivers.  Then there is the Carnegie Science Center on the North Side, you can spend all day there! And Station Square is really nice too, as mentioned above.  You can get the boats from there, and a lot of unique restaurants and shops. You can get the trolley/subway and take a round trip ride from there (Station Square)  to the South Hills and back.  The Pittsburgh Zoo is a nice place to visit. It's about 7 or 8 miles east of Pgh.  Type in Pittsburgh, Pa in a search on the computer, and you can find all kinds of stuff to see.  Many wonderful restaurants.  Hope you enjoy your visit.  If you come into Pgh. from the airport, the view as you exit the Fort Pitt Tunnel is awsome, as cookie mentioned above You are coming form the suburbs and Bammmm - the big city emerges in an instant. Really, Really awsome.  Ride one of the inclines, eat at one of the restaurants at the top - expensive, but a great experience. There is the Phipps Conservatory in Oakland, really cool.   Post here and let us know how you make out.  In August it can be hot and dry, occasional thunderstorms.  Temps probaby in the 80's, sometimes 90's during the day, 60's at night.  But it has been know to be cooler, or hotter!  August is kinda of a dry month for that area usually.  By sept, it starts getting cooler, with temps in the 70's, and 80's.

Have fun.  I am going to Myrtle  Beach, Florida, with dh - he will be on business, and I have never been there.  I am so looking forward to going on a beach vacation - it's been years, and never with dh.  I can't wait.  But I do hope you like Pittsburgh.  I always consider myself a Pittsburgh girl!!

Re: DOES ANYONE LIVE IN PITTSBURGH??

Hello, Sharon!  I live in Pittsburgh.  There are lots of fun things to do here, as Betsy mentioned.  August will be hot.

Museums:  Carnegie Science Center, Museum of Natural History, Art Museum, Andy Warhol Museum can all be accessed for schedules, fees, etc. at carnegiemuseums.org.   There is also the Zoo, the Children's Museum (don't know if any kids in tow) and the Nationality Rooms at Pitt.

You might be able to catch a Pirate game at PNC Park.  At Station Square you can take a boat tour of the city or even a "Just Ducky" tour (but book it ahead) on a land/water craft.

Shopping:  South Side Works is a fun shopping area, as is Carson Street and Shadyside (funky/eclectic).  My favorite place to be is The Strip.  This is our marketplace with coffee places (La Prima Espresso is tops), dried flowers and antiques, Penzey's Spices, Ethnic food shops and eateries, Italian specialty stores, and about anything you could think of.  The original Primanti Bros. is here as well.  (Betsy is right - you must try a sandwich there - yum!!!)  Lots of fantastic eats in Bloomfield (Little Italy), too.

There are many more things to do.  Do you want to know about some great diners?  Or a "Fancy" meal out? If you find out where you are staying and when I'd be happy to tell you more.  We love living here.  I hope you have fun.  Big Smile

I'd like to thank everyone who sent me information.  I will just generalize all that I know so far..  The Parmanti Bros Deli sounds great.  I'll just have to figure out where to go for that.

jelly jams, we are going to be there from Aug 17 to the 23 at  the Westin Convention Center Hotel.  His seminar is at the same place so I  probably won't have a car unless we really need one.

Kathy Jo - I will E Mail you a little later when I find out a little more about all this from DH.

Coo_kie, those tunnels sound fantastic.  We are coming in from the airport as we will be flying.

frenchpress, I would like to know about some of the diners and even a more fancier one too.  DH checked on a Pirates game, but there won't be any on when we're there.  No baseball or football games.

I will give you my E Mail address and you can all feel free to E Mail me any info.

I was born in 1953 at Magee Hospital in Pittsburgh and raised for lots  and lots of years in Mt. Washington, moved from the area in 1990.

May I recommend the Georgetown Inn -Grandview Avenue Pittsburgh PA 15211 - you should be able to google it.  Great meal - great view and great price.  The most reasonable place to eat while enjoying the Mt. Washington view.

    hope you enjoy your visit.

Coming out of the Fort Pitt Tunnels is like discovering a lost city. So cool. I am originally from Carnegie, most of my family is still there. Don't forget Kennywood if you like amusement parks. So historical. My grandson is begging for us to make the trip just so he can ride the roller coasters as he is now tall enough. Although I want to see my family, we just can't afford the gas to make the 800 mile trip. Have fun!!!

Re: DOES ANYONE LIVE IN PITTSBURGH??

I grew up about 10 miles south of Downtown Pittsburgh in the South Hills. Although I now live in the sub-country of Western PA, I still enjoy going to the "big city" as my 8 yr. old likes to call it. I love seeing the city at night! It's absolutely beautiful all lit up, especially the bridges!

Over across the Monongahela River is Station Square, which used to be a train station. They have kept most of the building the same, while incorporating shoppes and restaurants inside. The riverboat tours are also found here. The Majestic and The Gateway Clipper are just two of the boats to take a tour of the rivers on. You can go on the Captains Dinner Dance Cruise on a Saturday Night which is always nice and cool on the river!

Don't forget the Heinz History Center! It's a must! Even if you aren't from around here, you'll find this very interesting. The Center is located right in downtown Pittsburgh.

The Carnegie Museum has a new Dinosaur exhibit.....I believe its called Dinosaurs in their Time and while the biggest part of the exhibit opened in the Fall, the best part is opening on Father's Day.....the T-Rex!

The Georgetown Restaurant is very affordable and does offer a great view.

Try going to Google Maps and typing in the Westin address and click on street view. You'll see EXACTLY where you'll be staying and then if you have addresses of some of the other local sites, you'll see them too!

Re: DOES ANYONE LIVE IN PITTSBURGH??

If I'm not mistaken, your hotel will be right in amongst the Strip District (the open market place). You'll be in walking distance to Permanti Bro's.
You can take a bus cheap as the bus line goes right by there (lol, and everywhere).
You can take a nice walk across the bridges to Heinz Park, PNC Park...
You should be within a mile of a TON of activities and for sure go to Station Square. You can catch the Gateway Clipper Fleet (one of the sight seeing boats) and ride the inclines from there too. Nice shopping as the shops are GREAT!
Oh, I know the Georgetown is good, but also the Grand Concourse which is right in Station Square is SUPER for a FANTASTIC Sunday brunch! Even if you don't eat there, at least go in and see it!
I live about 45 min north of Pgh, but DH grew up in Pgh. He gets me all around there...I definately don't like to drive it!
You could take a bus to the South Side where the CheeseCake Factory is....FABULOUS shopping too!  Even grab a taxi! Or! Bring your bicycles and you can ride ALL over town! DH does!
    Have fun when you're here!
