Head to a craft store or place that carries threads, kits, etc.  (AC Moore, Joanne's, Michaels, even WalMart or KMart) You can get a simple book on "How to.." or a beginner's kit with instructions.  Most have how-to pictures and some are rated 'beginner, intermediate, advanced."  Even your local library may have books on how to do embroidery. Once you learn the basic stitches, it's not that hard.

When I was a little girl, my Mama taught me to embroider using the basic stitch shown on this web site: http://www.embroiderersguild.org.uk/stitch/stitches/stem.html. Also, if you click on "stitches" on that website, you'll see many pictures of stitches and you can click on each one to learn how to do it. I've learned some of these other stitches that I incorporate in embroidery, cross stitch, and quilts. One of my favorites is the buttonhole stitch. Using these stitches is fun and adds a deeper dimension to your fabric projects. Remember correct posture and good lighting will help your neck and back not hurt! Have a blast!

I agree with jerseygal, get a kit.  I learned by starting with a fairly small, not too detailed kit.  You'll get everything you need, the thread and detailed instructions for all the stitches.  Of course this was way back pre-internet days but I'm sure the internet will only enhance the instructions.  Good luck.

Yes.  My first embroidery was crewel, back when it was most popular.  I got a small pillow front kit and had that pillow until it just plain wore out from use.  From there I went to counted cross stitch, again with small kits to start to learn and then I was on my own and could do anything.

The internet is great for experts but I think it overwhelms beginners.
