    Creating Custom Rub-Ons

by Andrea Steed (Jan 12, 2005)

Rub-on alphabets and embellishments have become more and more popular on scrapbook pages. Theyre a great product to use when you want to add text or an embellishment across several layers of paper. Theyre also handy when you cant run the sheet of paper you want to print on through a printer (such as a 12 x 12 sheet that wont fit in a standard printer).

Unlike fonts or stamps that can be re-used over and over again, once youve used the rub-ons, theyre gone. If youre like me, you think hard before you decide to use them, so you wont be left without an E when you need it most.

Wouldnt it be nice if you could make your own and have any font or design of rub-on at your disposal anytime you needed it? I heard it could be done, so I gave it a shot. Sure enough, you CAN make your own custom rub-on designs! Heres how:

    Supplies
glossy page protector or transparency sheet
    popsicle stick
    computer
    ink-jet printer

    1. Design an image. Design a title or embellishment on your computer in a word processing program.
    2. Print on the shiny side. Insert the transparency or page protector (cut to 8 x 11) into your printer so that the ink will be deposited on the shiny side of the transparency. (If youre using a glossy page protector, either side will work).
    3. Change to a mirror image. Change the print properties so that your document prints as a mirror image of itself.
    4. Print the document on best quality. This will deposit a thicker amount of ink onto the slick surface so that you can transfer it to a piece of paper.
    5. Let it dry. Let the ink dry onto the transparency for at least ten minutes. Do not touch the ink -- it will smear.
    6. Place the design. Once the ink has dried, place the title or embellishment over the piece of paper with the printed side touching the paper.
    7. Transfer the ink. Press firmly onto the transparency and use the end of a popsicle stick to rub over all of the text. This transfers the ink to the piece of paper.
    8. Admire your work. Gently remove the transparency from the paper, and admire your custom-made rub-on design!

Once youve transferred the image, the transparency or page protector you used can be wiped clean and re-used.

Good morning!  I found this article and thought that it might be fun to try sometime.

    Good morning, everyone.

Nice Idea, MARY. I am not to eager to try things on the computer, but I bet it will be a snap for my DD to try. She usually makes signs and notices for me. Mary, hope you are feeling more chipper everyday.

Hi, COOKIE, I know you will try that. You do so well with scrapping and other crafts.

Continued prayers for GRANNY BARBIE's family.

Today, DGS Bradley comes back for a couple of weeks. We love having him here.

    Good Morning Everyone!!

Thanks for the neat idea Mary.  I might just have to give it a try.  It sounds simple enough.  Not a whole lot going on here.  I'm gonna get me some coffee and wait for the family to wake up.  Then I'll do some cleaning.  Might relax with MY scrapbook tonight.  My parents' book is as done as I can get it until I get the letters from my brother's family.  Once they come in, I'll finish it up.  I will take out any extra pages (I'm going to leave two blank ones for party picture pages) the week before I leave.  If anybody sends after that, I'll pack what I need and add it after the party.  I have to draw the line somewhere, and that is where I am choosing to draw it.  After all, everyone has had about 6 weeks to get the stuff done.  I will also take supplies to scrap the party picture pages.  I will be there until the 27th and the party is on the 16th.

    Time for coffee.

    Good morning.

Just got back from the campout at the club. I am totally surprised that I had a good time. No fireworks up there though. The next two weekends are taken with club things also.

Tomorrow we are going to go for a ride with friends. That will be fun.

Glad to see that everyone had a great weekend.

    Granny prayers for the FIL.

Off to take a shower and wash the crime from camping off.

Hi all!! We had another good night. We took the kids to the races. They were so fun. I havn't been in a coouple of years and had missed it. They had mini-van races and motorhome races that were pretty funny. They had an ASA division race so there was some actual good cars. One was a 16 yr old kid out of Idaho. He was really impressive. I had to laugh when they said his sponsors though. Stampin Up and Creative Memories were 2 of them. Then they said his mom had to work and couldn't make the trip. I told Jason she must have had a crop already planned LOL. They had fireworks also so it was a fun night.

Today has been a lazy day. I went thru Hayley's clothes. It's crazy how many that girl ends up with. I took a garbage bag out and her drawers and closet are still full.

I never did get any scrappin done. Depending on whether I have to get up early tomorrow I might tonite. We'll have to wait and see.

    Hi!

Thanks Mary!  Now I have to add transparency's to my list....can't wait to try it. That will save alot of money :-)

We had fun in Hayward, WI.  GO, GO, GO is what we did.  Go cars, lumber Jack show (kids got to go up on stage and each won free ice cream and mini golf), kids drove us on a horse and buggy ride, candy shop, fle market, beach, boat ride (kids drove again), fishing and fireworks out on boat.  It was fun but man am I tired.  DH and I decided that we will never own a cabin.  It is much easier to go out to eat and sleep and leave all the cleaning to someone else.  MIL is a clean freak so it had to look like a modle home when we left, no water spots, etc. STRESS.  Then when we pulled up in our driveway we both realized we forgot to clean up dog poop. Man we will never hear the end of that one!  Our house is much more realaxing too.  We ended up coming home a day early.

Lynne - Glad that you had a good time this weekend!

Cassie - It's a good feeling to go through the closets and purge, isn't it?  We went through Taryn's clothes not too long ago, but I have a feeling it will have to be done again fairly soon.

Amy - Aren't you making the birthday cake today?  Sounds like you had a fun weekend also.  We went to the fireworks show at the lake on Sunday and it was fantastic as usual.  It's a small, private lake so there's not a bad place to sit anywhere.

Nancy - Enjoy your time with your grandson!  It's nice that he can spend so much time with his grandparents.  That's something that my daughter has missed out on having around since both sides live out of town and are older.  They've never been able to really do things with her.

DD is at volleyball camp this week from 9-11 am.  It's just about time for me to go back and pick her up.  She's been waiting for this all summer so I hope she has fun.

Mary - I talked to my BIL.  No one really likes cake on that half of the family, including my neice.  So, I am making a 9x13 pan of brownies and still making it into a horse head.  To me brownies taste much better the day they are made so tomrrow I will make the brownies. I still need to buy some lifesavors for the horses fancy loop part of the reins. (got licorice for the reins).

I have been doing laundry today. I also have had the neighborhood over this morning. Only one came back after lunch - I am sure the rest will show up around 2.

Cassie - Are you going to do a garage sale with all the cool cloths your getting rid of?

Kim - Good job on all of the work you have done on your parents book.

Granny - Prayers for your extended family.

Nancy - You are so cool. Wish my kids grandparents would take mine for a few days.  They are too busy with their youngest son who has not grown up.

I got a PM from Denise that she can read just not post on the boards. She said to tell everyone she's thinking of everyone. She sent prayers for your DD's FIL Grannie.

I doubt I will do a yard sale. I don't have enough other stuff to go with the clothes. If I hold on to them long enough I might give them to the kids closet at school or mom sends clothes to someplace in Mexico so they might go there.

I gotta go figure out something for dinner. I took some cube steaks out of the freezer. Not to decide what to do with them.

    Good morning.

Had a great time yesterday. The day was perfect for riding. We headed home and I turned on our rode and a darn bee got me in the neck. I just hate those things and when your riding and they sting it feels like you've been shot.

Another busy weekend coming up. Cass doesn't know it but I'm planning on kidnapping the kids fri after I get off of work. Then Sat.. I am going to a show with friends. Then Sun. a bbq at a club members. All should be fun.

Well off to get ready for work. Have a great day ladies.

    Good Morning!!

Glad your ride went well Lynn.  Wish my mom would come and steal my kids for a day or so.  Too bad for me, they are in AZ.

I guess I am done getting letters for the scrapbook.  The only one that I know I will be getting for sure is the one from my brother.  I will go into Walmart next week and pick up the pictures I ordered.  Have to wait till payday.  With gas prices as high as they are, I try to keep my car days to paydays only.  Occasionally, though, I use it a day or two after as well.

Hmmmm......no kids friday night. Jason and I might have to try and make the nascar race here in town.

I am watching the baby for the first full day today. He's such a sweet little thing. Doesn't really have a schedule so that makes it difficult to get things done but he really doesn't fuss or anything. His mom says he constantly fusses for her and her babysitter. He doesn't for his dad and so far so good here. Hopefully it continues. He definitly keeps me busy though. I'm glad it's only a couple days a week. I'm too old for babies LOL.

He's demanding my attention again. I'll check in later.

Re: MissLizzy's Scrappin' & Stampin' Group July 6-12

I changed my mind and went to Walmart today.  Joe wanted me to go to the thrift stores on the air force base up the road as well as ours on Fort Lewis and see if I could find a bike for him.  So that meant I had the car without even having to as for it.  Found a bike for $15.  Just needed a little lubricating and air in the tires.  I did go to Walmart after getting the bike thinking the tubes needed to be replaced.  We now have some for when the ones that came in it wear out.  I did pick up the pictures.  I need to take my disk back in as the one I wanted the most (my mom is in her bathrobe and dad is in his jammies and mom is laying in a wheelbarrow my brother gave them for Christmas and my dad is pushing it.) my dad's head was chopped off.  The machine I needed to use (but didn't know it was the one I needed to use) was out of order the day I ordered them and I forgot to take the disk with me today "just in case".  I will get the rest of the pics laid out, hopefully tomorrow afternoon.  Then I'll go to Walmart on payday and pay more but get the reprint done in an hour instead of 2 days.

Sorry for the run-on out of control descriptive sentence above.  Hope you can get a good mental picture though.  The significance (sp) of that picture is they first met at a church function when they were teamed up for wheelbarrow races.

Anyway, have a good night all.
