H L Topic of Week 12/15-12/21: Keeping Up with Exercise During the Holidays

Keeping Up with Exercise During the Holidays

     eDiets

A Glimpse at My Holiday To-Do List:
    1. Bake cookies for the cookie exchange this weekend. Frost and decorate with holiday sprinkles.

    2. Shop for cookie batter and frosting ingredients -- and while I'm at it, buy a new cookie sheet (or two).

    3. Hunt through closet for something to wear to the office holiday party that looks professional yet party-perky, give up and deal with maddening holiday crowds to search for an outfit.

    4. Buy Christmas cards, address them and write cute little personal greetings on each one.

    5. Shop for gifts, including a few extras for unexpected visitors who arrive with presents. Look through the hall closet for the left-over-from-last-year wrapping paper and ribbons; give up and buy more.

    6. Mail gifts to relatives, strategizing the best time to go to the post office -- even though I know inevitable conclusion: There IS no best time.

    7. Decorate the house for the holidays.

Truthfully, just looking at that list makes me tired -- and you tell me that I should keep up with my exercise plan during the holidays? Hah hah, ho ho, merry Christmas.

Re: H L Topic of Week 12/15-11/21: Keeping Up with Exercise During the Holidays

Forgive me if I sound like the Grinch, but sometimes that's how many of us feel during the too-crammed-with-to-do-lists holiday season! BUT -- and this is a big but (in fact, it's about the same size that my butt gets if I don't exercise!) -- I also know that the holidays are a time when I most need to incorporate exercise and a healthy diet into my day.

Regular exercise and the right foods help to relieve stress and benefit us physically and emotionally. It's a win-win situation with regard to the holiday season.

So what have you got to lose? Nothing -- but the holidays are a time when you have a higher risk of gaining weight.

Making a plan always helps -- so here's my plan for maintaining my exercise program this holiday season:

    1. When I drive to the mall, I'll take a brisk walk around the outside before going inside.

    2. My gym workouts belong on my calendar. That way, they are scheduled in, giving them just as much importance as that holiday office party and the cookie exchange.

    3. Speaking of that cookie exchange, I'll ask if anyone is interested in exchanging fitness and exercise DVDs. I have some that I'm bored with -- and I'd love to enjoy some new ones and clean out my old ones with friends.

    4. I know my vulnerabilities when it comes to exercise. For example, I hate driving in wild winds and heavy rainstorms or hail. If it's that way on the weekend, I'm tempted to stay at home and skip the drive to the gym. Therefore, I'm going to make another list of exercises that I can do at home. For example, I have a variety of fitness DVDs, a stationary exercise bike and a mini stair-stepper. Those, together with crunches, leg lifts and stretches, will go on my list.

Variety is the way to go when it comes to exercise. Mixing it up means you're never bored and always entertained enough to meet your exercise goals (my current fitness goal is a minimum of five times a week for 30 to 45 minutes each time, mixing cardio and strength with flexibility and balance moves). I always keep a range of fitness DVDs and videos on my top shelf. Here are some favorites that are worth checking out:

10-Minute Solution: Dance It Off and Tone It Up: This action-packed DVD includes a resistance band. You can choose your own workout segments, such as Sexy Slim Down, High Energy Fat Burner (my personal favorite) and Dancer's Abs. You'll need that toning band for the Upper Body Tone-Up and Lower-Body Tone-Up segments.

Shortcuts to Big Weight Loss: This fitness DVD features three workout sections: Cardio Sculpt, Pilates Sculpt and Kickbox Sculpt. You'll also get a warm-up and cook-down, as well as bonus segments with extra instructions and ideas.

10-Minute Solution: Slim & Sculpt Pilates DVD: Included is a Pilates band. I particularly benefited from the Pilates for Flexibility section. I tend to have a problem with that aspect of fitness, and even though I was sore the next day, it was that "good sore" feeling that you get from a much-needed workout!

    Good Morning Healthy Ones!

I think I can see the light at the end of the tunnel...kinda! :) Are the rest of you in gear for Christmas yet? We still have much shopping to do of course, and I really should do some more decorating in the house and haven't done the mailbox. :) Oh well, if it gets done, it gets done and if it doesn't, it won't be the end of the world, that's my motto.

I am going to do an early morning workout before I start my day today and then have lots to do. We are going to trade out a modem today and see if that helps our poor slow computer. :) We were thinking of just getting a new one but if it isn't going to be any faster, what is the use? :)

What is your plan for exercise during the Holidays? I was thinking with all the running around and shopping, maybe that should count as our main exercise, don't you think? And writing out the C'cards- that should count as finger exercises- not to mention typing on the computer keyboard....LOL

Are you one of the ones tha is glad that Christmas is over or are you sad when it is over? I am usually sad, wondering why I hurried around so much instead of slowing down and enjoying it so this year, I am going to try that route as much as possible. :)

Off to exercise-I think my fingers are nimble enough- now to work on some main body parts! :) Have a healthy day!   How was your weekend?

Good morning. I am going to po today to mail a package and don't know if I will do anything else. I think it is suppose to rain today, if it does I will stay in. Getting ready to go back to TX. have lost to do. And you are right Muril this is a busy time of year, too busy.

I do exercise most days, the last week was not as good as usual, but for the most part I seldom miss. I need to find something to do besides the bike. Maybe I will start using the 5 lb weights again.

Hi to everyone. Yes Debi the potato chip cookies were good. When I get back to TX I will see if I can find the recipe.

Good Morning!!  It's raining here now - suppose to get special with ice and snow - the drive home should be fun - NOT.  Well, I think I'll live - I was SO sick last week - finally feel somewhat human today - I hope the worst is over.  Need to go back and catch up with everyone from last week.

    ((Jolene))

Muril - Great article.  It is an EXTREMELY busy time of year - seems there is something going on every night.  I think your exercise "ideas" are great!!

Dusta - You do so great with your exercise - have safe travels when you head back to TX.

    Waving to all,

     Good Morning~!

Jet & Michele - be careful out there!!!  It sure has been a weekend for bad weather in the midwest.

Hope Jolene & Pammie are ok too. Sending warm thoughts.

    Hi Dusta & Muril~!!

good article, I need to get exercise on my calender. I'm finding that I push it aside easliy to do other things. And that's not good  Sad

It's going to be a busy week for me too - I need to do the post office & bake 2 batches of cookies. This past weekend I wrapped & boxed all the gifts needing to be sent. Including my SS - woohoo!!! LOL!!   I made the hot cocoa mix for the daycare teachers - I need to get the cookies done by thursday because one of the women will be out from friday through the 1st fo the year.I don't want to leave anyone out with the gifts!

I did a quick grocery trip yesterday, got what I needed for the 2nd part of my 2-week menu. We actually have a lot of leftovers (or things I didn't make last week) because of Samantha & dh being sick. DH is still icky, not as bad but not 100%. He hasn't had much of an appetite so what I did cook is sitting as leftovers in the fridge.

and I have to say this - probably sounds like Grinch - but people in the stores are RUDE!!!!!!!!!  Has everyone (or most people) forgotten this is the time of year to be nice, giving and considerate?!?!?  I swear that every rude person was in SuperTarget yesterday. People walking 4-5 abreast down the aisles, would not move over or look behind them (going slow & people behind couldn't get around). Some people were actually ramming their carts into other people's carts.... it was crazy.  It's Christmas~!! why are people so bitter & cranky?

sorry - that's all I'll say on the subject Wink

hope everyone has a good day!

Re: H L Topic of Week 12/15-12/21: Keeping Up with Exercise During the Holidays

Hi, Muril, Dusta, Michele, Jet and Dawn (from the icy north).  I'm at work to warm up!  about 70% of my town is currently unplugged, although we're luckier than most.  We have wood heat, and a gas range, so I am warm and can have coffee!  LOL.  I schlep out to my neighbor's to get a couple big containers of water each day so I can flush (no water with a well), and DH and I luckily just re-instated our gym memberships so we can get hot showers!  I've already told him that if I don't have electricity by Tuesday night, we're getting a hotel room so I can watch Biggest Loser finale.  I have my priorities to think about!  It looks like we'll be without power most of the week.

As you see, we've rejoined the gym, now that hiking is over till May.  I am doing a 20" routine on the treadclimber and another 20" of lifting.  Then a 4-mile ride on the bike, which is cool, because you can program it to take you on a ride through the country or on the coast, with a screen in front of you.  All in all, I probably burn 500 calories, but I have always liked lifting, so it's nice to be back.

I have to mail my cards, put up my tree, and make a pork pie.  That's it.  So we'll get the tree next Saturday, I'll get the cards out tomorrow, and then the pie is for Xmas eve, so I'm feeling pretty much in control.  The only party is with my SILs so it's jeans and a sweater!  I decided to forego the cookie baking.  Don't need the hassle OR the extra calories!  School is finished till after the new year.  Then 2 more classes and I'm all done!

The princes are not happy with the unplugged status.  They were pretty much MIA all weekend, hanging out with wired friends!  DH and I played cards, and I got some closets organized.  He worked on cutting limbs and trees most all weekend.  He had a week off (and was thinking he'd have the whole winter off), but lo and behold, he got called onto a job by another steel company, and he went to work this a.m.  So there goes my laundry guy, my cook, and woodstove-tender.  I was glad to see him head off to work, he was getting on my nerves already!

We ate out at Subway twice, and once at the Portsmouth Brewery which was a disappointment.  The fisherman "stew" was tasty, but not very filling.  'Course the two glasses of bourbon (hey, have to keep warm) probably added a few calories, too! But other than that, we've stayed pretty healthy despite the inconveniences.

I haven't heard from Jolene, (no power at home, so no computer), but NH was very badly affected by the storm. Hopefully she's with someone that has heat, water and TV!  This storm was a good one.  But here's the thing....in the 50's today.  Go figure.

Hope you all have a great day!  PammieJ.

    Hi everyone.

I thought I would let you know that Jolene is safe.  Got a quick email from her yesterday, she said she was at the store sending it.  They might have power back within 3 days.

Good Morning!  Hope everyone is safe and sound. We are having rain and temps in the 30's. Snow level is supposed to drop to 500ft. Princesses were very dissappointed that we didn't wake upto a "Winter Wonderland" this morning. I was not! LOL!!!!!

Had a rough weekend health-wise. I was in so much pain on Saturday night that CM had to drive me and the girls home from dinner at his DM's house. He then took my truck back to his house. He came over yesterday morning and made us breakfast - waffles and bacon - and then sent me back to bed and took care of the girls all day. He sent Gemma to a friend's house and he and Jordyn watched movies and then went to Laura and Rocci's house. I finally was able to drive him home about 4:30. I had just enough energy to eat dinner and get the girls bathed and into bed. I'm feeling somewhat better today but I can feel my energy draining away! I get my test results tomorrow afternoon and we will be able to make a treatment plan.

Have to get back to work - I'll try to check in later!

Jet - thanks!!! I was only taking OTC pain pills because I had my Princesses this weekend. Tonight will be something stronger AND CM will be staying over to take care of me. My appt is tomorrow afternoon for my test results and to decide if it needs to be a total hysterectomy or just an endometrial ablation.

    I'll keep you all posted!

Ginny hope you get good news on your test and you are feeling better. And so glad you have someone there for you, to lean on. ((  ))

Needed to mail Mel's dd a gift, he thought I should go to UPS so that is where we went. Didn't have to wait, cost was probably about the same. But not having to stand in line was great.

Re: H L Topic of Week 12/15-12/21: Keeping Up with Exercise During the Holidays

    Good Evening!

Yeah, I have my cards made and now to get them addressed and in the mail. LOL I have been to the PO(mailed my ss package- patting myself on the back), and bought some stamps.... Then headed to W-mart for duplicating the family pic into C'cards for the family and some of me for my HL C-card list. Yeah, maybe you will get them before C'mas! :) DH and I are going to our Church Christmas dinner this evening so no cooking for me tonight! :)

We decided the motem could wait until Wednesday... :) So, we are keeping things in priority here! :)

Dusta, have a safe trip home. Have you thought of doing some of the pilate workouts(you know me, always pushing pilates.lol) for your winter workouts? There are many that are pretty short. I alternate between an easy one and advanced one on the same video by Denise Austin and then try to do a cardio a couple days a week too. I will be looking for the potato chip cookie recipe too. I love different recipes! :)

Michele, so glad you are feeling better! It is a terrible time to feel out of whack! Well, anytime is, but especially Christmas time! :)

Jet, what types of cookies and candy do you make? Feel free to add them to the cookie thread! :) They don't have to be healthy. After all, we are all human and love rich desserts once in a while! :)

Dawn, sorry about all the leftovers. Have you thought of freezing them in individual serving sizes? I do that with baked spaghetti and baked mac-n-cheese- and when we want supper and I have no clue, I heat one for each of us with a salad. Of course some things don't freeze well .... :( Yuck on the rude shoppers. I have been pretty blessed and not encountered too many rudies yet! :) DH and I did see something quite rediculous today. A man was riding a cart and he had a bag of grapes and he would eat them a little at a time.... :( DH said when he left(I was waiting on the C'cards)....there were no grapes- nothing and he just got off the cart and walked pretty as you please. I told DH he should have asked him if he had eaten all the grapes. LOL I am so bad. :) Things like that really irk me!

Pam, you and I are in sink on card sending this year. I am going to address them this evening. Sorry you have no electricity-that is awful! Good thing you have the wood stove- that is a life saver. Have you been cooking any on it? I am not sure if I will do any cookies this year or not. I know I have to do some type of goodies- all the gang is coming to spend the night on C'mas Eve so have to have lots of munchies. :)

Hi Debbie, thanks for the update on Jolene. (((Jolene)))glad you are safe and sound! Stay warm.

(((Ginny))), sorry you are having a lot of pain. :( Glad you have CM and he seems to be a sweetheart about everything.

    Happy Candy Making Jet! :)

Off to address some envelopes. :) Note: Just saved in word because it wouldn't let me post and have addressed the envelopes-now to stuff them. :) I need to get a shower before the dinner so guess it will have to wait! :)

Hi again Dusta! :) There was no line in the PO today about 12ish. Beats me, I thought there would be a long line but it wasn't! :)

Muril that was a great article. Waving hi to everybody.

(((((Ginny))))) So sorry you are in so much pain. Glad CM is taking such good care of you.

I am trying something new. Since I can't completely get away from the snacks at work, I quit bringing regular snacks and am attempting to make sure I get plenty of protein and very little sweets, maybe just a few bites of the sweets I want the most. That seems to be helping me not have that horrible crash when the blood sugar spikes and then dips. If I don't do that, I end up feeling awful. It was easy today as we had tostados and chicken wings and some sort of spinach/ham thing and several cheese balls. I also got 6 or my 8 hours at work very physical (sort of like the parcel sorter ).--huge volume of parcels today, probably will be the peak day of the mailing season. I was at a station throwing parcels into the hampers for the carriers and boy was it cold. It is windy and rainy here. Felt like I had a real workout by the time I was done

    Have a great day everybody.,
