Are Any Of You Gardening Experts? I Have A ?

Do you know if you can grow hybrid plants from cuttings? I know that tomato plants can easily be rooted and grown from branch cuttings and that's what I'm interested in doing, but if the plant that I take the cuttings from is a hybrid, will it grow true and produce the same fruit that the parent plant would?

I know that you can't keep seeds from hybrids and get the same plants as the parents and you can't take cuttings from hybrid trees and bushes that have been grafted on to a different rootstock and have the the same either, but what about from a plant grown from seed?

I'd like to start tomato plants and just root cuttings to supply my whole tomato bed this year.

Yes!  That's the only way you'll get a true plant.

Gardenweb is a good place to get some answers. Here is one link about tomatoes and reproducing them from the plant. Read all the posts.

I personally have never tried it. I just either start my tomatoes from seed or go get plants at the one mennonite green house or from an elderly lady that has the trick on growing big tomatoes.

The only thing I have sliced the limb and stick in water then grown plant wise is forsythia and pussywillows.

    My thanks to you both.

enjoynature, when I opened the Garden Web website, I realized that I had belonged to that several years ago and completely forgot about it. Thank you for the link to the posts and for reminding me about that very useful site.

Thanks for the link info -- I joined

I emailed Reimans to see if we could get a group/forum for gardening here but have heard nothing yet. I would really enjoy one as there are so many questions and helpful answers it would be great to have it under one heading in case I miss a post.

I received the same email, but nothing has come of it either.

I suggested the garden club, thought it would be fun to have one to go to and talk. I like watching for other posters questions and the answers. This is only our third year and I have so much to learn.

    coacheswife and enjoynature,

I have wished for quite awhile that we could have a gardening forum here in TOH. I'm sure that there are many folks who grow and preserve their own vegetables and that they also have many recipes for using the fruits of their gardens. I still go over to the Birds and Blooms site for gardening questions as they still have the flower gardening and vegetable gardening forums, but I agree that it would also be nice to have one here too. The only problem I see is the same one they have over there and that is those two forums go almost dormant from late Fall to late Winter when people get the gardening bug again.  Most of those group forums here have one person that opens them every day and helps to keep them active. I could help keep one active, but am not sure I could be on here every day to start them.

I think the best way to get a gardening forum here would be to begin a daily post here or on recipes and build up a group of posters who visit daily with questions and answers, tips and maybe preserving recipes. Once it's established I believe that Reiman might admit it as a forum on it's own.

I'll join in on any gardening talk. I'm older than dirt and have gardened for years. I can, freeze, and dehydrate things too, so I can answer questions too. Maybe!
