    Apple Crisp :)

I've made this several times now - family and friends love it!  And it's easy for simple cooks like me, lol!    Just wanted to pass it along ...

    http://www.tasteofhome.com/Recipes/Mom-s-Apple-Crisp

    Ingredients:
5 medium tart apples, peeled and sliced
    1-1/4 cups sugar, divided
    1-3/4 teaspoons ground cinnamon, divided
    1 cup all-purpose flour
    1 teaspoon baking powder
    1/2 teaspoon salt
    1/2 cup cold butter, cubed
    1 cup water

    Directions:
In a large bowl, combine the apples, 1/4 cup sugar and 1 teaspoon cinnamon. Transfer to a greased 8-in. square baking dish.
In a small bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt and remaining sugar; cut in butter until crumbly. Sprinkle over apples, pressing down to smooth top.
Slowly pour water over the top; sprinkle with remaining cinnamon. Bake, uncovered, at 400° for 40-45 minutes or until apples are tender. Serve warm. Yield: 8 servings.

I'm real picky when it comes to apple crisp.  I want some tartness but I still want it sweet.

I've come to the scientific conclusion it should only be served a tad warm & with real vanilla ice cream.

    LOL

That sounds good, labrat.  I could sub Splenda for the sugar and DH could have it, too.

Mmmm it sounds great!  I have a serious dislike for oatmeal but I love apple crisp!  It's nice to come across the recipe that doesn't combine the two.

Renee, I use the tart green apples (Granny Smith?) ...

Yep, definitely warm.  I make it late in the day so it's warm for dinner.  After that*, heat individual servings for 1 minute in microwave.  Ice cream ... or we like it with real whipped cream!

*if there's any left over, lol

This is very similar to the recipe I use.  I like it as it's more like pie than a crisp.

Labrat that sounds good..I also have a topping recipe that I use for all fruit crisps-1 cube butter/margerine, 1 cup sugar, 1 cup flour (I call it my 3 in one) cut together with a pastry cutter and sprinkle on top of what ever fruit you wish..It was originally given to me by MIL for apples, but I found with experimenting that it worked with most fruits..I always keep a shaker of cinnemon/sugar on the lazy susan and I will sprinkle a little of that on the top of the crisp before baking. Have never used baking powder, but I suppose it could be added to the 3 in one mixture..T

Oops.. Looks like I am too late for sharing.. Sounds delish, Labrat. I have some apples that need a happy place to be.. Think I will make one of these.

    Enjoy!

:( yes Ridge, you did miss it.  But, since you have those apples that need to be used, we'll all come over there and let you share  Smile

Toni, that topping sounds great!  When you say a "cube" of butter, I'm figuring that is a stick, right?  A half cup?  (Remember, I'm in NJ, we sometimes talk different, lol!)  Now I'm thinking how that topping could be used with fresh peaches, blueberries, raspberries ... oh I wish it was summer!

Since you've made it this way and it works, I don't really see what difference the baking powder would make.

Toni I do this same thing for topping and keep it in the fridge and make little individual crisps with any soft fruit in the micro. of course apples i still bake it. I have some frozen raspberries in the freezer I may try next. the OR balckberries are great this way too. oh and rich cream poured on top is great too!
