REC. & REV. Fried Apple Pies posted by Rosiewny

Rosie,Risie,Rosie, you've gone and done it again. When I read the recipe you posted for fried apple pies my mouth started watering. I haven't made a fried pie for a very long time and am now wondeing why I didn't.LOL I used canned apple pie filling but they are just as good as cooking the regular apples. The rolled out biscuits were sooooo flaky it was as if I had made the dough myself. This will be in  some peoples Christmas  morning breakfast  plates.Thank you again for another outstanding recipe.Depo!!!

    Recipe courtesy Paula Deen
Prep Time: 15 min Inactive Prep Time: -- Cook Time: 40 min Level:
    Easy:
    8 servings
     Ingredients
    2 tablespoons butter
4 McIntosh apples, peeled, cored, and sliced, or 1 can apple pie filling
    1/2 cup sugar
    1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    1 teaspoon lemon juice
1 (8-piece) container refrigerated flaky biscuit dough
    2 tablespoons water
    Powdered sugar
    Directions
Filling: Add the butter to a large saute pan and melt. Add the apples, sugar, cinnamon and lemon juice. Cook over medium heat until the apples are soft, about 15 minutes. Remove from the heat and cool.

When the filling is cool, roll the biscuits out on a lightly floured surface so that each biscuit forms a 7 to 8-inch circle. Place 2 to 3 tablespoons of the filling on each biscuit circle. Brush the edges of the circle with water. Fold the circle over the filling to make a half-moon shape. Seal by pressing the edges with the tines of a fork.

Preheat deep-fryer with oil to 350 degrees F.

Carefully add the pies to the oil, 1 at a time, and fry until golden brown, turning the pies as necessary for even browning, about 5 to 8 minutes. Drain on paper towels. Sprinkle with powdered sugar immediately.

Made me wonder why I didn't think of it LOL.Wink

My DH loved these little treats. The little sprinkling of powdered sugar really finishes them off.

Thanks for the great review Depo and to Rosie for posting it...and to Paula for showing it LOL

These sound awesome, but I have a question - if you use the apple pie filling do you still have to cook up the apples with the butter, sugar, etc?   Did you use "flaky" biscuits or just plain buttermilk?

    Thanks
    Kathleen

I wonder if you can use pumpkin pie filling or sweet potato filling for these instead of apple. I am not crazy about apple pies but as a kid I loved fried sweet potato or pumpkin pies. I may try them soon and let you know.

Kathleen,if you use the canned apple pie filling you don't have to cook the apples,it's just a sub. Yes, I used the flaky biscuits, really good.

I don't see why you can't use anything you want for the filling.I'm thinking of using canned peach pie filling next time.Depo!!!
