    Healthy Choices 11/03/2009

Good morning everyone was a real nice day yesterday sun shine and warmer then what we had in October this is November right?

DW is doing better but still rather weak seams to forget things more than she did before wish I could stay home with her more.

DDiL wants me to sew new curtains for Nicole’s bedroom so we finally got the sewing machine out of the Morton building and down stairs might get that done sometime this week or at lest by the weekend.

Marti sorry to hear you are having dental problems seams to be one thing after another any more I hope Joe and you can make it to the Mt’s. sometime before winter sets in.

I think Pat is getting mad at me because if she moans or groans I’m right there asking her if she is alright. LOL

Maureen DW has a problem in that her BS bounces up and down so much gets really low and then she feels sick and sweats like a butcher. The doctor said she should try just the one shot per day to see if it would work with the oral medication but I don’t think its working. The next alternative is the one shot of 10 units at night and then a shot of 2 units at meal times she will need to go back to doctor when the blood work is done to have this setup.

I don’t know what your yard is like but we have open country so I bought an Echo leaf blower backpack model that works great for getting rid of the leaves but I just blow them of into the country side, I think you should get the containers saves so much time. LOL

Verna I hope things turn out for the best prayers going your way for both the arm and finding a good care giver.

Jo Ann your salmon sounds so good I wish Pat would eat more fish I might try this and see if she likes it.

Have a nice day and God bless everyone.

    Viny

Good morning all. Looks like a sunny day here, we had sun yesterday too, finally! I almost forgot what the sun looked like. Of course we are having rain again tomorrow. I am taking ½ day off tomorrow to visit a “museum house” in the city where I grew up. They rebuilt it from original plans and filled it with donated items from the 1950’s. I think I mentioned this before; anyway I am going with 2 friends who have never been there. I have been there twice and will love showing it to them. We are all about the same age and this place is so nostalgic. Here is the link, I wish they would post pics of the inside. At Christmas they have an aluminum tree with the colored light wheel.

    http://www.cityrm.org/HTML/historical_museum.htm

Viny, you must have patience with Pat; she has been through so much. Maybe this would be a good time to retire? Just a suggestion… Also, is she a candidate for the implanted insulin pump? That would assure the proper dose. I made DH try some salmon at a cooking demonstration but he hated it, oh well…

Marti, more dental problems? Oh no, and you just had those implants done too. I saw a cartoon recently of a dentist saying “Open wide” but the patient was holding his wallet, LOL

I have been alone at work recently and am getting frazzled. I have so many problems to look into with the billing and have no idea where to start with some of them. GRRRR

Have a good day all, I am trying to get back on track with the points. DD went back to WW center and is doing well. We both kind of let ourselves go after the wedding last year. Have a good day, Sue

    Good morning friends,

Things are getting better here. Holley is back to work but still not feeling great. As for me, my depression has hit big time again. I called Verna yesterday and she let me vent.

Friday we went to High Park to bury my brother's ashes. Standing there looking at all the stones in the family plot was so sad.

My father, mother, brothers, niece, nephew and grandmothers are all there. It was such a miserable day adding to the feelings.

The strangest thing happened, too. The elderly caretaker was waiting for us and we were all in shock as to how much he looked like my brother Earl. He was built the same and the facial resemblance was unbelievable.

I want to thank you for your support and the cards ~~you are always there for me.

There are many things going on here that I would like to share with you but I don’t want to write about it on here.Perhaps I will write a note and e-mail later today.

Viny I’m sorry Pat is still feeling so weak. I will say a special prayer for her this morning.

Marti I hope you and Joe can get away for a day.

Barbie thank you for sharing the Halloween pictures, the children look fantastic.Your little boy is such a beautiful little fellow.

Today I hope to get Mo’s nails cut again if I can get an appointment. I had them cut a couple weeks after we got him and the young lady told me she couldn’t cut much. The pink part of nails called the quick would bleed because it was too long. Perhaps I should take him more often to have this improve. I will ask about this today. I’m afraid to do this myself because I don’t want to hurt him.

I better get some breakfast and get out to vote.

    Have a nice day

    Shirley

Oh yes, Viny, that is me in the picture. How do you like that stroller? LOL    Good morning Sue, I would love to visit that house with you. I can relate to being a young housewife back in the mid-fifties.

    Re: Healthy Choices 11/03/2009

Good Morning everyone,  good to see so many post this early.  Where's JoAnn, I hope she is ok.
Viny, I'm so sorry that Pat continues to have problems and I understand you being there everytime she groans, this is natural.  I'm hoping as each days passes, they will be able to get her medication adjusted,   having a new doctor may be a good thing.   I know you want to be there, but don't retire until you are ready,  your being there may cause Pat to be more dependent on you and not do anything for herself.  I've seen some of that with dh since I'm home with him

Sue, a trip through the 50's would be wonderful, I'm with Shirley, I'd like to go through the museum with you,  that was my teenage years.  Enjoy your trip today,  Sorry work is so stressful for you, maybe getting away will help

Shirley, I'm so sorry you are so depressed and winter months coming  along won't help.  The doctor talked with Joe about adding an anti depressant to his medication but mentioned that it takes weeks to get into the system,  Long winter days are not good for those who are depressed.  Can you find a Senior  action group to be a part of and this would get you out of the house some?  Just know that I'm praying for you and hoping this improves.  I'm glad you vented to Verna,  I'm sure she gave you good advise.  We are all here for you so vent anytime you feel like it.

We saw low 40's this morning so I'm inching my plant closer to the basement door.  Just when some of the outside plants are really getting pretty, it's time for a frost.  Today, I'm going to replant all the bulbs that I took up early in the summer, but I may just dig a hole and dump them in it.  I've still days of work at the house, but don't feel up to tackling that today. I will vacumn today and hope tomorrow we can drive up the mtns. for a day out, Thurs. dh has doctor appt and my dsil called and ask if she and a friend could come see the house Thurs. afternoon.

Jolynn, thanks for the updated HC list.

Saying a prayer for Verna and hoping she has a good candidate int he group she interviewed.

Maureen, thanks for the website,  I've bookmarked that and will check there often.
Barb, I didn't get the pictures, boo hoo,  can you send again?

I'll try to come back later and see how everyone is doing

Shirley, I  love your new picture,  I couldn't decide if it was a stroller or walker, how old were you?

    Re: Healthy Choices 11/03/2009

Good Morning!   It’s bright and sunny again, think we’re getting spoiled.   DH is home with a knot in his neck.   He said he was fine yesterday when he left for work and it came on all of a sudden in mid-morning.   He said it is too sore for a chiro to work on it.   He’s putting hot and cold on it and it is only slightly better than last night – he though he might go to the doctor.   This poor man seems to have more aches and pains than anyone I know.

We finally went over to Kim’s to celebrate her birthday and I brought dinner and the cupcakes and balloons.   Ava was majorly wired – she had just gotten back from dance class and then to have a party with grandma and papa was more than she could handle.

I made Kelly’s Spicy Southwestern Stew, which is from Verna.   It’s much better than the average stew recipe.   Also made some rolls that had herbs and parmesan cheese in them, but think I’ve had ones I liked better.   I’m probably my worst critic because both DH and Kim loved them.

Viny, Pat should improve, give it time.   I can’t remember if she’s seeing an endocrinologist or not.   That insulin shot at night is very odd – I take it these are all the short acting insulin or regular, whatever they call it now.   My brother in WA takes a shot before each meal as does my son.   Sounds to me like a diabetes class would be so helpful for the both of you.   For the BS to be bouncing around like that, it sounds like someone is having a hard time figuring out what to do.   You need to take the appropriate insulin for the food you’ll be eating.   Maybe I’ll write you an email with some thoughts.   Oh, and aren’t you the talent to be whipping up curtains on the sewing machineJ

Sue, I love going to museums like what you are describing, especially when it’s a time period that you are familiar with.   Good luck with WW – it is hard getting back in the routine, isn’t it?

Shirley, it makes me sad to think about you being depressed.   I hope Verna was able to help.   And in answer to your question about Mo’s toenails, if you do it more often, it should get better.   What happened is they were let get too long.   Some dogs wear their nails down if they run on hard surfaces, but our dog runs mostly on lawn and his grow quickly too.

We have started doing an absentee ballot and wonder why we never did this long ago.

I mailed it in over a week ago.

Marti, I guess you’ve been there, done that as far as having someone sick being so dependent on you.   I can understand your thoughts.

Sure hope you and Joe get out for your drive.   DH and I need to do the same before the mountain roads will have all the snow on them.

Just ignore all that has to be done around the house, it’s more important for you to get well.   It can wait.

Verna, isn’t it funny how in the interviews people neglect to tell you what could potentially be so important?   And it’s funny too how they want the money but don’t want to be inconvenienced.

Jo Ann, maybe you’re out with hubby looking at the addition to the tractor???   LOL!!!

How are you so lucky to have naturally brown hair and most of us are gray or white?   You must have good genesJ

I told DH that Dr. Oz is good and it’s just about time for him to come on.   Plus I think he’s made the decision to see his doctor so we have to call on that.

    See you later….

    Re: Healthy Choices 11/03/2009

Hi. Sorry to have been invisible lately. I was working on the weekend, and then yesterday just got busy with choir stuff and a choir rehearsal. Today I was in Helsinki teaching my conversation class. I'm keeping up with my aqua jogging and Pilates. I think it is starting to do some good. I put on my black trousers today, and they are a bit baggy. yipeee! Shirley, sorry to hear you are feeling low. I hope you find a way to stay on top of it. This is one reason that I have committed to exercise. Mostly, I feel mentally much better than when I am not bothering about it. Can you get to the pool? Sorry about the knotty neck your DH is having. ouch. I hope he finds some relief. DH is leaving tomorrow, so I will be a good wife and fold up his shirts and trousers tonight. I ironed everything after his last trip. Getting cold here, so I almost wish I could go along! Stay healthy, everyone. And keep those tails up! lusi

    Re: Healthy Choices 11/03/2009

    Hi everyone.

This time change has me waking far too early.  I was awake and reading at 3:15 and in the shower at 4.  Of course, I dozed through all the TV programs last night so got plenty of sleep.

It was 29º this morning and foggy.  Will be sunny later.  I still have some yard things to do.

Sue, that is neat, having the house as a musuem.  I am ashamed to say that in the little town across the river where I grew up , they made a musuem out of an old church and I've never even gone over there to look.  Maybe I'll do that this winter.

Marti, I did send the pictures to you.  I will resend them.  I have 2 addresses for you I think so I'll try the other one.

Maureen, sorry about your DH neck.  I would think heat not ice unless he has an injury.  Maybe the Dr. would give him muscle relaxers.

Viny, I forgot about you knowing how to sew. I think that's neat.  I need to put my machine up and hem some things.  I actually have 3 machines here and seldom use any of them anymore.   Sewing used to be my hobby and I had something going all the time.  Then patterns got so expensive, I just kind of quit except for fun things like curtains and pillows.

I hope Pat gets her BS figured out soon.  Our friend is having a hard time keeping his down right now.  I worry about him because he is such a heavy man too.

Verna, when I read what you ate yesterday, it reminded me of the Bonnie Hunt Show yesterday.  She had the author of "Eat This Not That" on.  He brought all kinds of food and compared it to other food.  One of the things was a fish/mexican type plate....which was equivalent, fat and calorie wise,  to 14 glazed donuts.   One vegetarian sub type sandwich was the equivalent of 5 Dairy Queen banana splits.  Really an eye opener for sure. Oh and Smart Start cereal had more calories and sugar than Fruit Loops.

He  had a lot of foods to compare.  Made me really think about calories.   He said calorie wise, you can figure 10 cal. per lb. of body weight is really what you need.

This is a good time for us all to be thinking about this with winter and the holidays coming .  I always gain  in winter and  really wish I wouldn't this year.

I'm finding it really difficult because I just can't lose without exercise and I'm pretty limited on that.  I did do a 40 min. workout with bands, being careful with any lower body workouts but my hip and groin area were hurting this morning.

Jo Ann, I'd like to see a picture of your haircut.  I was telling Viny that I wish you all would share more pictures.

Shirley, I would like to see a bigger picture of you .  It's hard to tell if that's a stroller or scooter.  I have a real old stroller in my flower bed that I put plants in each year.  I also have a little wooden horse, riding toy, that I have had a plant on all summer.  When  I put all the plants up, I sat that on the porch and now Landen rides it.  I thought it would be too little for him but he loves it.  I guess I'll take it to the shop and paint it up bright for him.

Well, better get off here.  I will be back later to see what kind of mischief you've all gotten yourselves into today.

    Re: Healthy Choices 11/03/2009

Good morning all....it is still morning here!  Another beautiful day...sunny, warm and breezy.  I have the doors open for fresh air.  It is pretty cool at night dropping into the upper 40s...but the last two days have been glorious!

Viny, Pat DOES need to be under the care of an endocrinologist as well as an internal medicine specialist (as her PCP).  The fluctuating blood sugar needs to be controlled and the idea of a pump may just be a good one.  I have a friend that is a very brittle diabetic and uses the pump.  She is probably in better shape than most of us!  I know you'd like to spend more time with her and probably, right now, that would be good.  However...as someone said....she may become too dependent on you.  Wonder if you could retire from full time and just do consulting.  I have some curtains to be made too...come on down!  My sewing machine is out and ready to go!  You truly are multitalented!

Just returned from taking DD to the periodonist.  She did have to get that tooth pulled.  She's had multiple gum surgeries, a root canal, lost the two teeth behind it and is facing an implant.  In my (mother's and biased!) opinion, she needs to quit smoking before wasting the money on an implant....the smoking keeps her mouth so acidic and contributes to tartar AND smoking constricts the small blood vessels blocking effective circulation to the area.  Of course she's already stumbled outside to try to smoke since we got home.  She's now lost all three molars on the upper left....and I think the smoking is directly linked.  She'll have none of that however.

All my candidates were basically clean on their background checks.  Now it's time to do another round of interviews.  I hope to get Barb to do them for me....another brain in gear is always helpful.  Of the seven, one was nixed early on...the one that made me antsy...and the other one who really didn't want to work weekends..even after I told her what the days would be.  Grrrr!  That leaves five to re-interview.

I need to get in the kitchen and make some nutritious soft food for DD.   Will do a chicken spaghetti and some hamburger "smash-up" (ground beef cooked with onions and added to mac ' cheese with a can of diced tomatoes thrown in).

Shirley, your avatar is so small I can't really see the picture good.  Can you enlarge it or repost just the pic?  Glad things are a bit better today.  Just pack up and come on down for the winter...it's much nicer here!  LOL!  Bring your shorts!

Sue, that house sounds like so much fun!  That was my era too!  I'd love to go through it....in fact, I probably have a few things that would fit right in...old kitchen utensils etc.

OK...I'd better get busy...need to cancel my nail appt...DD is just too drugged up to leave later today.  I suspect she'll sleep most of the day...after three sleeping pills this morning plus the laughing gas.....I'd be out for a week!

Y'all have a good day.  Maureen, you asked something and I'll go back and see what it was and email you.

    vammie

Editing to say that Maureen is right about that stew...it is delicious and I don't even like stew!  That's what I wanted to comment on.

How neat to have an old picture like that.

Shirley, I love that picture.  That looks a lot like the stroller I have in the flower bed.

I just got back from Walmart.  Ran into my friend who was getting a prescription filled for an appetite suppressant.  She is the one who has gained so  much since she learned she had Celiac Disease.  Now she wants to loose 20 lbs. so is trying medication.

Verna, good luck interviewing.  At least you've weeded out the "culls".   I hope your DD is feeling ok.  It's nice to have mommy take care of her and cook her soft food.

DH has to have a tooth pulled next week.

Speaking of DH, I can sure tell he is home.  That TV blares all the time.  It was very quiet around here last week.  Tongue Tied
