Cheapest Audition Ever: Journey Searches YouTube, Finds New Lead Singer

Meet the Philippines' Arnel Pineda (that's "pin-eh-da"), the most recent man responsible for encouraging those wonderful YouTubes of nobodys covering somebodys we all love so. Journey's needed a lead singer, and guitarist Neal Schon told Blabbermouth:

I was frustrated about not having a singer, so I went on YouTube for a couple of days and just sat on it for hours. I was starting to think I was never going to find anybody. But then I found THE ZOO and I watched a bunch of different video clips that they had posted. After watching the videos over and over again, I had to walk away from the computer and let what I heard sink in because it sounded too good to be true. I thought, 'he can't be that good.' But he is that good, he's the real deal and so tremendously talented.

The Zoo is Arnel's band, who've been rocking Journey covers and originals for years and, of course, posting 'em to YouTube. Neal called Arnel, Arnel called BS followed by promptly losing his sh.... when Schon confirmed it all via email: Arnel had received a formal invitation to be the new lead singer of Journey. Pineda's wise to the ways of überfans -- gotta figure he's one himself -- and he's "actually looking forward to the scrutiny I'll get from the hardcore JOURNEY fans. I know they'll expect me to sound exactly like 'the voice' (Steve Perry), but that will never happen. I know there's only one Steve Perry in this world." That said, he does seem to stick to Perry's stylings pretty, yep, faithfully.

The new Journey is releasing their new CD this Tuesday, June 3. For just $11.88 from Walmart, you will get 3 discs which includes 1 CD with 11 greatest hits, 1 CD with 11 brand new songs and 1 DVD with 10 songs of their Las Vegas concert last March.

The new singer is simply fantastic. He is already 40 years old but looks years younger. He used to be a homeless guy when he was younger in the Philippines. His story is very touching and remarkable. When he went to the US embassy in Manila for his tourist visa interview, the consul thought he was crazy when he said that the purpose of his trip was to audition for the Journey band. He made Arnel sing in front of him and he sang Wheels in the Sky and his jaw dropped. Needless to say his visa got approved and they are about to embark on a world tour. The CD is not officially out yet but you can go to this walmart link to view 10 FULL videos of their performance in Las Vegas: The first 5 songs are under WATCH THE VIDEOS FROM THE DVD link and the remaining 5 (also full songs) are on the left side under WATCH THIS CLIP. You just have to listen to their new song AFTER ALL THESE YEARS. This song has great potential for being a hit.

Just go on YouTube and listen to all his stuff. The guy is incredible. He does all kinds of songs, many BETTER than the original artists. The only one I found lacking was Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody. I guess there really is only one Freddie Mercury.

I wonder what Steven Perry thinks of him?

I agree he sounds like Steve perry. I didn't get to see him perform as I had a Dr appt, and left 15 minutes before the end of the show. Of course it was 2 hours before I was seen. in the picture he looked pretty good to me. I think this is the new guy. They found him on youtube.

Now that he's been playing with the actual band, he sounds more like him. If you can find the clip from yesterdays Ellen, you'll be amazed.

Thanks for the link. I scrolled down to see how he sounded on my favorite Journey song, Open Arms. Steve Perry is a tough act to follow but......Not to bad, I guess if they need a replacement, he'll do.

Steve Perry's voice really MADE Journey. Can be replaced but can't be Steve Perry's Journey. They were original, unique and awesome.
