So rumspringa starts around 16 and lasts for approx 2 years ---- yet they drink?? Something doesn't match up. What is the legal drinking age in that area? Isn't it 21 years in all states now?

We used to live in an area heavily populated with Menonite & people would complain that their farms were messy. There were just as many messy traditional farms as there were messy Menonite farms and plenty of Menonite farms that were neat & clean.

Take this boy/man for instance. this happened in 2006 and he is 25 now. And the Amish and Mennonite both drive cars/have cellphones during this time. I have both Amish and Menninite friends and there are some that all they live for is to party on weekends and there are some that are sensible, good, hard working people. Just because a lot of them do party during this time, doesn't mean that they all do.

I posted this because I was sad that this boy/man made bad decisions and now has to pay for what he did and also because it was horrible for what the Knepp family had to go through.

RumspringaRumspringa is the term for Amish teenagers' period of experimentation and freedom from religious rules, when they are able to live on their own, drive cars, drink, and experiment with other aspects of mainstream American culture without worrying about consequences from their elders. The term rumspringarumspringarumspringa is a literal translation of the Pennsylvania German expression, "running around."

Traditionally, the AmishAmishAmish family is tightly bound, and obeys religious rules, such as forgoing the use of electricity, cell phones, and cars, and wearing modest clothes at all times. Women wear long dresses and bonnets, while men wear suits and beards. They are devoutly religious, and go to church often. During the period of rumspringarumspringarumspringa, however, young people are excused from all of the traditional behaviors and rules of the AmishAmishAmish community.

RumspringaRumspringaRumspringa is a coming-of-age experience that generally begins around the age of sixteen. Though many AmishAmishAmish teenagers will continue living in their parents' house during this time, others may move out. During rumspringarumspringarumspringa, teenagers often experience the "English" way of life, which is how they refer to mainstream American culture. They may go to bars or nightclubs, drive cars, and date non-AmishAmishAmish people. At the end of the rumspringarumspringarumspringa period, which traditionally lasts about two years, teenagers are expected to return to the AmishAmishAmish community so that they can be baptized, after which point they are expected to follow all the laws of AmishAmishAmish society.

If an AmishAmishAmish teenager chooses not to be baptized, he will be shunned from the AmishAmishAmish community. His family and community will refuse to speak to him or associate with him ever again.
