Maybe they want to own the device rather then pay a service fee every month. Maybe they want a larger screen then a cell phone has. Maybe their cell phone does not offer that service. Just a few possibilities to help shed light on it for you. I'm sure there are other reasons as well.

A lot of people keep saying which ones have the "latest maps"...with the cellphone service, you never have to be concerned with that. It is always updated automatically. I wonder why nobody else seems to think that's a good feature? LOL I sure do!

We have a Garmin Nuvi, from all I've read Garmin and Tomtom are the two best brands. We've been using ours for a couple of months and it works great. Love it. We leave next week on a 3 week trip to the west coast and up the coast fromCalifornia to Washington and back home and we're thinking it's going to be very helpful.

By the way I shld add I am 72 and not too up on the latest tech stuff...its moving way too fast for me..Just thought I'd let you know. I see a post from someone above my age that has the wide screen & thats what attracted me there, only this latest map stuff has me stymied. Thanks again.

Thats interesting to have a DS in the business, but who do you believe. Two places told me the Garmin 255 has the latest maps, another told me the 260 has the latest maps. I almost went with the wide screen 260 then the guy tried to get me to buy the one with the bluetooth etc, so I finally just walked away. Too confusing for me. As for having one on yr cell phone I don't own a cell phone, am not interested in chatting every minute of the day. Used it when I travelled a lot for safety reasons but do not need it anymore. Plse ask yr DS which is the better buy. I can get a 260 for $159 Cdn....a 260W for $199 and a 255 for $199. all Cdn prices.... wld like to have one just for getting around the city & surrounding area. Moved here a couple of yrs ago & think it wld help me a lot in navigating my way around. Thanks....

I received a Garmin Nuvi 260 for my birthday and really like it. It announces the street names which is very important to me. The best price, at the time, was from Amazon, but they are always having sales in all the electronic stores now also. We love going to garage sales, and I just program in the addresses first, and then, off we go. Some of the homes nearby are built like you're in a maze, so it's really helpful. You can go to Garmin.com and read all the reviews too. Just make sure that the model you buy is programmed with the latest maps.

I still vote for getting it on your cellphone because you never have to have it updated and it's so accurate. Nothing extra to buy or lose or get stolen.

Now that I think of it, I think I had a third one...Magellan? I can't even remember! LOL I hated them all because in very high heat (118 degrees), they all malfunctioned. But never my trusty cellphone! No big outlay of money and never be obsolete.

We have had our Garmin for 2 years and love it. Have friends who have TomTom. Went through a tunnel and it hasn't worked right since.

We have a TomTom, have had it 3 or 4 years with no problems at all. We have driven from Michigan to Arizona 3 times using it, and use it very frequently for finding addresses locally, and love it! We bought one for our DS and DD for Christmas and they also are very satisfied. It is very easy to use, I do not have the patience to play around with electronics trying to figure out how they work, and our TomTom is very simple to use.

Chkd a couple of places & apparently the Garmin 255 has the latest maps as opposed to the Garmin 260. Also both places seem to think Garmin is better than Tom Tom, but than again its a matter of choice....am chkg another couple of places tomorrow....Want the best bang for my bucks..

DH has an iPhone and we use that a lot more than we ever thought we would. We had to go out of town to pick my sister up at the hospital and it helped usget there fast. Afterwards she wanted some chicken broth and it showed us the nearest Quiznos. Look at what your monthly fee would be and see if just getting a new phone would be cheaper. All providers have the ability, it is just that some phones have better aps.

I've had a Garmin, a TomTom and one built into a Saab...hated them all. What I LOVE is that for $9.99 a month with Verizon, I can get my phone to tell me where to go. I can use it anywhere, power it up if needed with the car phone charger so I don't run out of power while driving...it has a color map, talks to you, gives very detailed instructions and is always up-to-date, unlike others that you have to have updated with software. I didn't have to spend money on something extra and have to worry about it being stolen (one was stolen from the car, broken window and all that), and it fits in my purse...doesn't add any weight to my phone! LOL

I would never use anything else now.
