&lt;p&gt;At the beginning, however, the diagnosis is a huge shock/adjustment, and humor is NOT the thing.&amp;nbsp; A card of encouragement would be much better as a first contact.&amp;nbsp; More and more cancer survivors are starting to write and sell their cards on-line. There are cards to congratulate cancer survivors on their cancer free anniversaries.&amp;nbsp; Five years is a really big deal, but every test, with its &amp;quot;scanxiety,&amp;quot; is another opportunity for friends to reach out in support.&amp;nbsp; &lt;/p&gt;

Another thing you can do, is if this person is close&amp;nbsp;to you, or even if not, buy a luminary in their honor at your area&amp;#39;s Relay for Life. Or go to the event and get involved.&amp;nbsp; My best friends mom was recently diagnosed with BC and has not told her daughter much.
