To my Jewish BB friends...

    I have just finished reading "The Source", by James Michener. I was absolutely mesmerized by this book, and its history of the Jews, and how the Muslim religion and Christianity both evolved from the Jewish religion. Do you think it's a good depiction of Jews as a nation, and as a religion? Would you recommend any other reading for me?

    I really only want to hear from Jewish people here...

    I KNOW!! I could barely put it down, and I honestly intend to start reading it again! After 1100 pages!

    I don't know that I read that book, but I did know that the Jewish religion was the start of the monotheistic thing.
    Christ was of the Essene Jewish sect. It was Paul (who used to be Saul) that challenged the word of Jesus' brother and ceased with the conversion to Judaism and changed much of the "rules" (so to speak) to what Christianity is now.
    And that Islam considers Abraham the father of the Jews, as well as the father of Islam.

    I read it when I was a teen, and while I don't remember thinking it inaccurate, I remember that I didn't like the book. Probably because I have always taken the adamant stand that Judaism is a religion, not a race or ethnicity.

    One book I can recommend about recent Jewish history is called From Doom to Dawn. Written by a Jewish Chaplain, it tells about his work with displaced persons after WWII.

    i read the book when i was young. enjoyed all of michner's work. if you enjoyed it i would recommend another oldie but goodie, exodus by leon uris and o'jerusalem by larry collins and somebody else that escapes my mind right now.

    I think it's going to be mine too, Sharon. Like I said, I have never been so fascinated with a book that I wanted to just immediately read it over again. Did you think it was historically correct?

    I enjoyed reading "The Source" as a teen (a loooong time ago). I remember being more impressed by the archeology in it rather than the religious history. A few years back I read "The Red Tent" by Anita Diamant, which takes the story of Dinah from the Bible (it's about 2 paragraphs) and turns it into a novel. Whether the rites depicted in it are historically accurate is anyone's guess, but it's a good read.

    When I read The Source (1967) I was teaching with the son-in-law of a Rabbi. I asked a lot of questions. I liked the book, and I, also, liked Exodus.

    oh yes! the red tent was very good!

    don't know about michner's religious background. he was adopted (although rumor has it the one who adopted him was really his unmarried birth mother). and he went to a quaker university (swarthmore) so i don't know if that was for religious reasons or not...
