Its about time someone said it like it is!

This text is from a county emergency manager out in the western part of Jefferson County after a snowstorm.

    WEATHER BULLETIN

Up here, in the Northern Plains, we just recovered from a Historic event may I even say a "Weather Event" of "Biblical Proportions" --- with a historic blizzard of up to 44" inches of snow and winds to 90 MPH that broke trees in half, knocked down utility poles, stranded hundreds of motorists in lethal snow banks, closed ALL roads, isolated scores of communities and cut power to 10's of thousands.

    FYI:
    George Bush did not come.
    FEMA did nothing.
No one howled for the government.
    No one blamed the government.
No one even uttered an expletive on TV.
Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton did not visit.
Our Mayor did not blame Bush or anyone else.
Our Governo r did not blame Bush or anyone else, either.
CNN, ABC, CBS, FOX or NBC did not visit - or report on this category 5 snowstorm. Nobody demanded $2,000 debit cards. No one asked for a FEMA Trailer House. No one looted. Nobody - I mean Nobody demanded the government do something. Nobody expected the government to do anything, either. No Larry King, No Bill O'Rielly, No Oprah, No Chris Mathews and No Geraldo Rivera. No Shaun Penn, No Barbara Striesand, No Hollywood types to be found. Nope, we just melted the snow for water. Sent out caravans of SUV's to pluck people out of snow engulfed cars. The truck drivers pulled people out of snow banks and didn't ask for a penny. Local restaurants made food and the police and fire departments delivered it to the snowbound families. Families took in the stranded people - total strangers. We fired up wood stoves, broke out coal oil lanterns or Coleman lanterns. We put on extra layers of clothes because up here it is "Work or Die". We did not wait for some affirmative action government to get us out of a mess created by being immobilized by a welfare program that trades votes for 'sittin at home' checks. Even though a Category "5" blizzard of this scale has never fallen this earl

    Well aren't they just wonderful.

LoriG, I've seen this one before but am not sure that it's been posted here at KC. Will be interesting to see the variety of responses it receive.

So what's your, and the author's point? Should our media and government not respond to emergencies? I think they should respond.

Is he jealous because not enough homes were destroyed, and not enough people died, to merit the type of coverage that Katrina received? Boo hoo for him.

Cannot even believe the arrogance of the person that made this statement. Maybe he didn't realize that over 1800 people died in hurricane Katrina and that countless numbers of people helped their neighbors during Katrina too without payment. What a jerk.

I just don't think these two situations compare to one another.

I'm still curious as to Lorigurly's intent in posting this. Is she saying that Northerners are better than Southerners? That mostly-white communities are better than more integrated communities? That everyone affected by Katrina was already on government assistance? That anyone who ever asks for help is lazy?

    What?

here's the rest of the post:

    RE: This well worth reading!
for 'sittin at home' checks. Even though a Category "5" blizzard of this scale has never fallen this early, we know it can happen and how to deal with it ourselves. In my many travels, I have noticed that once one gets north of about 40 degrees North Latitude, 90% of the world's social problems evaporate. It does seem that way, at least to me.

I hope someone gets the message:
No one OWES you a living!

Well- it seems to me that whomever wrote this garbage is an idiot.

:-( See my reply in BYC. Are you trying to start something? Or is it just your way of sharing your misery? I am having enough personal probs without reading all this sarcastic trash.

Oh, yeah, and Happy New Year to you, too. :-(

Mountainman could be possibly be MORE negative?

I don't think it's garbage, not that I necessarily agree with it all. I know one thing. If I were in such a disaster, at some point, I'd get off my @ss and help myself. For me, that's the point. Appreciate help? Sure! Accept what is offered? Sure! BUT, it's each individual's responsibility to get off their @ss and help themselves to the BEST of their ability. Many did not do that after Katrina, and still aren't. And before anyone asks, YES, I have had a home damaged in a hurricane, and the entire area was declared a disaster area by the feds. Did I get help? Yes, one load of trash hauled off and one new water heater. The rest we paid for.

My take on this was the people in Jefferson County took care of themselves.

Cool I guess, but some disasters (weather related or not) need some help from outside communities & the gov. I see nothing wrong in that either.

I'm just sitting here, shrugging my shoulders over this one.

When the danger is passed and all things righted,
God is forgotten, and the soldier slighted."
