    ?? Using Amish Friendship Starter

I have been given starter, it is now time to divide it, and bake with it. Has anyone ever used it as starter for yeast breads, pancakes, etc. or can you only use it for a sweet bread (quick bread)? Any and all suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

RE: ?? Using Amish Friendship Starter

I've found several recipes for "other things" to do with it from the search box on the left. I believe I typed in Amish friendship bread to get the recipes. I haven't made anything yet other than the quick breads (all of them excellent), but I copied recipes for brownies, cookies, sour dough bread, biscuits, cinnamon rolls and chocolate cake. I also found other tips there, such as you can freeze the starter, thaw it and then bake with it. I did that and it worked. The cheesecake pudding works well with a banana and a small can of crushed pineapple (drained). I also made the cherry pie filling one with cream cheese, it was delicious. I think the poster was bbsahm who posted these. You may find them by typing her name in the search box and clicking nickname box too. Hope this helps.

    AMISH SOURDOUGH WHITE BREAD *
1 C Amish friendship sourdough starter
    1 C water
2 T margarine, butter or oil
    3 1/4 C bread flour
    “no sugar”
    1 1/2 t salt
    2 t yeast
Put all the ingredients into pan in the order of your machine. Select either the "white" or
"oat/French" bread setting, turn the brown control darker and push "start".

    1 1/2 C wheat flour (I use stoneground)
    1 1/2 T gluten
    “no sugar”
    1 1/2 t salt
    2 t yeast
I use wheat setting on my machine. (I understand you can use "sweet bread setting", haven't tried it)

    AMISH SOURDOUGH RYE BREAD *
1 C Amish Friendship Sourdough starter
    1 C water
2 T margarine, butter or oil
    1 1/4 C bread flour

    1 C rye flour
    1 1/2 T gluten
    “no sugar”
    1 1/2 t salt
    2 t yeast
2 t caraway seeds (add 5 minutes before last kneading cycle ends)
I use wheat setting on my machine (I understand you can use "sweet bread cycle", haven't tried it)

    * The 3 Amish Sourdough Bread recipes were developed by GGma. I have used these many times. I developed these recipes to use "that stuff that grows" (according to 1 of my daughters).

Thank you so much. I figured there should be some way to make regular bread because I have made sour dough bread before and this resembled that starter very much. Thank you GGma!!! :-)
