DC Meet and Greet Family Room

Come on in to the family room here at the DC house.

Bring your coffee and let's meet the group!

We've been together since July 2004 and over the years we've formed a strong bond. We've become sisters and our extended families are as much a part of us as we. We consider all the DH's as BIL's and we worry about them as much as we worry about each other.

We welcome new folks with open arms and we'd love be have some brother too!

So let's go around the room and make introductions. Basically give a bit of bio about yourself and your family. I know we've done this in the past, but now, here in the family room, we'll be able to keep this family tree information all in one place so when new folks come, we can just invite them into to family room to find out who we are.

So, who's going to be first....

Ladies, for those of us who've been in the DC for a while, we may know all these things about each other, but this Family Room is for the new folks.

Lets introduce ourselves, what part of the world we hail from, family details like ages of children and GK's. Also what your occupation is if you have one.

How about hobbies and favorite pastimes or where you spend hours each week. Hoe about - what's the story behind your nickname?

You know, that kind of stuff. LOL

It's like we're trying to create a scrapbook on each member. My idea for this room is not so much a place to hang out and chat, but rather a place to meet and greet each other. Then when new folks come, they won't feel intimidated if they can't remember who lives in CA and who lives in FL and who's married and who's not.... that kind of thing.

And I'm pretty sure that we'll all learn something new about each other. as well. So take your time, create a bio and then post it. Just remember to not give too much personal detail (like last name or address) as this is still the Internet and it's all open to the public.

    I'm Joyce.

I'm was born in 1956. I'm single, never married (rats!), no children. I have nieces and nephews so if I mention "the kids" that's who I'm talking about. I live in Indiana (outside of Indianapolis), but lived in a suburb of Washington, DC for 25 years. I moved back here in 2002. I am a word processor in a law firm.

I was diagnosed with diabetes in 2004. I did well at first with keeping it under control with diet and exercise, but then I stopped being good and my numbers went up. So I'm on glimipiride (sp?).

Hello! I am not the most regular poster around, but I still consider all the ladies my friends!

I hail from the great white north, or at least today, with frost so heavy, it sure was white, infact, looks like it will snow soon. I live in Central B.C.

I am 31 years old, have three kids and a DH. DH works in construction. He is self employed building houses, but his real love is building decks, cabinets and other fine furniture. He is a jack of all trades, except machanicing! DD#1 is 7 and does really well in school. DD#2 is 4 1/2 and is our little cutie pie, she could never get enough cuddle time. DS is three, he is a whirlwind of activity! He loves cars and trucks.

I am a SAHM. I also babysit two-three kids whenever need be. I myself don't have diabetes, but my sister's DH developed it just before their wedding. He got it from a flu, and is insulin dependent ever since. He has seizures sometimes to, so he has to be careful. I came here because I wanted to learn more, and because everyone was so freindly!!!

If you want to have a face to the name, here is a link to some of my pictures. http://s95.photobucket.com/albums/l140/char3bc/

Howdy! I am Annette and I am from the great state of Iowa!

I am married with 4 wonderful girls and 1 adopted daughter. I have been married to a great husband and friend for 32 years and going strong! I have blessed with 7 grandchildren and they are the joy of my life.

I have 3 dogs and 4 cats. Lassie (a collie) Maggie (a shiz-poodle) and Sir Charles (a pom). 4 cats Blue (my rag and most loveable cat)-Spunky (my terror of a cat)-Cletus (my daughters cat that I take care of-and Mortica ( a cat my granddaugher brought to me at only 1 lb. and I saved. Now I have 5 I am taking care to save and trying to find homes for.

I have been a diabetic for quite some time now and a poor one at that. LOL Let me see a candy bar and I will have it in 2.2 seconds.

I have many hobbies and do many outside activities. I sew-embroidery-read mysteries-religious books-crewel-cermices-scrapbooking among many other things. I go visit shut-ins-many church activities- and just too many things to mention. I love to keep busy and have my days full. Sometimes I feel it is too much but when I try and cut down, I am at a lost at what to do or where to spend my new found time.

My nickname Nellie comes from the Roy Rogers show and Pat Bradys car Nelliebelle. I just loved that show as a child and never forgot Pat Brady and his antics with dear Nelliebelle.

    Annette :)

    LOVE THIS NEW ROOM!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey all - I'm Michele. I was diagnosed about 3 years ago. I'm on Metformin which has worked up till about a month ago. My DO (Doctor of Osteopath)has me maxed out on the Metformin. I'm very careful with my diet and get plenty of exercise (ok, I still need to loose 140 pounds on top of the 68 I've already lost)which has worked for me.

I live in northern Wisconsin, have 1 daughter, 1 dog - Taffy, and 2 cats. My favorite expression is "Uff da" and I love to send out warm fuzzies. Oh, in case you haven't noticed, I tend to become "chatty cathy" every now and again LOL.

I'm an ER Technician and work in a small ER 20 minutes from my house. I'm planning to relocating next summer. I work the night (11pm - 7am) shift so when you see weird times, that's why. I don't have a computer at home but do go to the library to check in now and again. I love to garden, am in to organic foods and natural living. Also love camping and fishing.

Whew, that's about it. Hope to see you all come back!

    Love and Fuzzies!

I rarely post, but I do lurk -- still, I'll say "hi"! :)

My husband is diabetic, recently diagnosed (well, about two years ago) and is doing quite well. He takes Metformin (sp?) and watches what he eats, but as the chief-cook-and-bottle-washer in the house, I need to get better about knowing what he can/can't eat and how to cook for a diabetic.

I'm 43, he's 46, we've been married 21+ years, have two teenagers (eek!) and now live in Texas but up until a few months ago, lived in Virginia, just outside of Washington DC. But Texas is "home" and we're delighted to be back here.

And now I'll go back to lurking LOL!

    Good Morning, all ~~

I am Sandy. DH and I have been married 50+ years and are the parents of 3 daughters. They are 49 ~ almost 50, 47, and 44 years of age. We have 3 grandchildren (only DD#1 is married), and 1 GGD. Our SIL is a wonderful guy, and considers himself a 'brother' to the girls.

Since I have 3 replaced joints (1 knee, and 2 hips), my activities are mainly reading, playing cards (bridge, 500 and euchre), serving on the Nurture Ministry at church (our Pastor doesn't like the word 'committee'). As my nickname implies, I have followed in my mothers' footsteps and love to cook and try out new recipes. DH is my critic and determines whether a dish is a 'do-over'. As a matter of fact, cooking is really this familys' pastime, as we ALL love to cook ~~ SIL is a master on the grill!!! My most recent 'replacement' was in June, so I am beginning to do more walking, trying to increase my stamina level ~~ which has led to more shopping and visiting the local mall. I might even try a craft show or two this fall!!!

We live in northern Illinois in a town of about 10,000 people. DH and I grew up about 3 blocks from each other, and except for the first year of marriage, have remained in our 'home town'.

I was diagnosed with diabetes approx. 7 years ago, and for most of that time I have controlled it quite well using glyburide. Since I have had many serious medical problems this past year, my doctor has now added Metformin to hopefully stabalize my BS numbers.

I think this is so wonderful having our own 'home'. Hope to see more of you join our family ~~ all the gals here are wonderful friends. 'til later..........

    ♥Sandy

    Well, it’s my turn.

I’m Erica and glad to be a part of the DC!
I am having fun discovering my purpose in life after 50.

    So who am I? Really?
Well… I’ll try to list who I am in my order of importance.

I am my own person. I am free to be who I want to be.
I am a daughter of the King of Kings, a beloved child of God, created in His image to glorify Him, saved by the blood of Jesus and led by His Holy Spirit.
I am a woman passionate about personal freedoms! I believe that every woman, man & child has the right to be respected!

    I also am:
Mother of 4 wonderful adult children, 30, 28, 22, & 21, and those precious kids bless me continually with their zest for life. No grandkids yet.
Sister to one awesome younger brother. He is mentally handicapped (since birth) and has some challenges, but he knows how to love and he fiercely supports my kids and myself even when it seemed the church & family was against my becoming a single mom.
Only daughter of German immigrants to this great country. Both of my parents are still alive and in good health and we spend a lot of time together as we have common loves – the computer (that’s my dad, 79) and cooking and baking (my mom, 75, the avid TOH and cookbook lover)
Close friend to the special people in my life and the folks of the Diabetic Connection are among my dearest friends and are in my heart throughout the course of each day!
Student as everyday I discover something new about my world, my business, or myself.
Leader /networker that loves the fun I have nurturing relationships helping create a supportive community of like-minded people.
Teacher that loves to teach the skills of creating the life you choose or coping with the challenges you have.
Canadian living in Edmonton, the capital of Alberta – the place they call it God’s country!

I am glad to be alive! Hope you figured that out!

    That’s my story.
Oh, since 2003 I’m also a type 2 diabetic on metformin and gliclazide.
But that’s not the main reason I’m here at the DC.

RE: Diabetic Meet and Greet Family Room

Greetings from south central Michigan. My name is Deb, and as my nickname shows, I am a happy person. I am 54(I really can't be that old!!) and have been married to Danny for 21 years. No children, but we have a 9 month old miniature dappled gray dauschund Gracie. Although I held a teaching degree, I never taught full time and have spent my adult career in the restaurant world-from a cook and waitress to GM. I am currently waitressing in a small truck stop and love the contact with people from all walks of life. I was diagnosed with diabetes almost 6 years ago. I lost 50 pounds within 4 months and have never looked back. The weight is still off, and I am no longer considered Diabetic. I still need to lose about 40 pounds, and I also still need the support and encouragement of this wonderful group of gals. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my dh, playing on the computer and reading a wide variety of books.
The best thing to happen as a result of this disease, was meeting up with everyone here.

RE: Diabetic Meet and Greet Family Room

    Hello,
Glad to see a board for us diabetics.
I have posted some on recipes for about three years or so, mostly just checking for new recipes that are quick and easy.
I have been a diabetic for about 6 years now. I am 60 years old and been married to same man now for 40 years. No children, but have a cat, named lucky.
I live in north eastern corner of Alabama
I retired from work at age 55, because of plant shut down, and haven't gone back to work. Like to read, especially cook books (which I colect)
I am involved in the VFW Axiliary and American Legion axiliary, which keeps me busy at times .
