    Deep fry in Nesco?

I have the small 4 quart Nesco, and wonder if I can deep- fry in it. The thermometer goes to 400, and I would be deop-frying at 365 degrees, but since it wouldn't be covered, and the heat coils in a Nesco are on the sides, I am wondering if the oil would retain it's heat?

Back in the late 50s and early 60s they made all metal slow-cooker-deep-fryers. Remember them well, they were fantastic except they had no insert you could take out and clean and the cords were not detachable.
You could probably use your Nesco but to be onthe safe side, I would give the company a call and ask them.
It may be OK to do so rarely on occasion, however, things are NOT BUILT the way the used to be and I would be leary to this on a steady basis.
Best ask the manufacturer. Know this is not much help, but I would rather err onthe side of caution.
Have used just a plain heacy copper bottom pan to deepfry in when we travelled in a travel trailer (no room for larger gadgets) and it worked fine.
Today's heat coils may not as be as strobly made as those of 40 or more years ago, best make sure by asking
    Nesco.

In the March 2004 Good Housekeeping magazine, page 174, there is mention of a deep fryers which is unsafe. Here is the blurb....

Product: Deep fryers sold at discount department stores and thruough web sites from May 2001 to October 2003 for about $55. The NESCO brand stainless steel deep fryer has a black plastic top and handles on two sides. (No product number or model number was given)

    Contact: The Metal Ware Corp.
    1-800-726-4457

Problem: The mesh filter in thecover of the deep fryer can allow moisture to build in the oil reservoir causing it to boil over during or shortly after use posing a burn hazard to users.

I have a Nesco, and I wouldn't recommend deep frying in it.

The heating coils are around the sides of the Nesco, and it might not reach the temperature which you require.

I think if Nesco wanted you to deep fry in it, they would have mentioned it in their instruction books.

    P.S. I love my Nesco's

I don't think you can deep fry in a roaster oven. If you could, it would be listed in their booklet with recipes and instructions. I think it could be dangerous. JMO though.

Thanks all...I knew you would have the answer. Grelo, I have Emiled Nesco, and will probably get an answer on Monday. In the meantime, you have all convinced me that I shouldn't do it. All of your reasons make sense. And since there is no more room in my apartment kitchen..(too many 'toys' already), I will just have to use a heavy pot and a thermometer.
