HL Topic of the week 3/31 to 4/6 Face Yoga: the Fountain of YOUTH?

When Susannah Troy first tried face yoga, she had no idea what to expect. The 45-year-old New York City resident was mainly searching for a little inner peace when she ventured into class nearly a year ago.

“I was over-stimulated with city living and was trying to restore myself,” Troy recalls. “I needed to clean out all of the anger and toxicity that had built up inside of me.” Spiritually, she found what she was looking for, but was also pleasantly surprised with something she calls the “fringe benefit” of her practice. “People tell me I have never looked younger or prettier. It’s a late-in-life miracle.”

Troy is not the only one feeling and looking better after face yoga classes, which are geared toward those who want to look younger without the intrusiveness and cost of surgeries or painful injections.

It’s no wonder that face yoga classes are so popular, especially in urban settings: Americans are obsessed with discovering the fountain of youth. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Americans spent a whopping $11.5 billion on cosmetic procedures in 2006.

Men and women in all age brackets seek out face yoga classes in hopes of softening wrinkles, lines and creases that already exist and preventing new ones from forming, says Troy’s instructor, Manhattan-based Annelise Hagen. The author of the soon-to-be-released The Yoga Face (Avery, 2007), Hagen says she has no shortage of students hoping to take a few years off their faces.

A few of Hagen’s devotees, mostly in their 50s, have even discontinued their usual Botox injections in favor of Downward Dog. “There’s no need for Botox,” says Hagen. “Here you’ll see better results.”

What do you do in a face yoga class?

Which poses comprise a face yoga sequence depends on who you ask. Hagen teaches a combination of traditional yoga postures along with face-specific exercises formulated to combat wrinkles through relaxation and tension reduction, and to tone the muscles as a preventive measure.

“Through repetition and resistance, you can be proactive when it comes to the aging process,” says Hagen. “I tell my younger students that if they do this now, they won’t have to worry about damage control in the future.”

Some of Troy’s favorite exercises include rolling the tongue to make vibrating sounds and exaggerated yawns to release the jaw muscles. “We also laugh a lot out loud and blow kisses to send love around the room,” she says.

Leta Koontz, owner and yoga instructor at Schoolhouse Yoga in Pittsburgh, also incorporates face yoga into her classes. “We hold a lot of tension in our faces,” she says, “so if we can consciously learn to relax those muscles and to reduce the overall stress in our lives, the end result is almost the same as Botox.”

Koontz does not devote an entire class to face yoga, but rather incorporates face-specific poses along with breathing and meditation into about 20 percent of the class. When it’s time to practice the more traditional yoga positions, she gently reminds participants to keep those facial muscles relaxed. “It’s very synergistic,” she says. “Whatever the body is doing, it continues into the face.”

Is face yoga all it’s cracked up to be?

This latest yoga trend isn’t without its critics. “Relaxing your face is an important part of yoga because the face is an indicator of tension in the rest of the body,” says yoga expert Rodney Yee, who’s made more than 30 yoga DVDs and is co-owner of Piedmont Yoga in the San Francisco Bay area. “But to claim that this is the same as a face-lift is commercialism.”

Although Yee advocates incorporating relaxation of the face muscles into an ongoing yoga practice, he worries about people who are practicing yoga simply for the hope of superficial benefits.

“That is the antithesis of yoga, pretending to be something that you’re not,” he says. “There is a beauty in becoming older.”

Koontz admits she was a bit apprehensive about incorporating facial postures into her classes because of the shift in focus from the interior to the exterior. “Yoga is about what’s on the inside,” she says. “But we, women especially, care about our appearance, so I look at it as just another way to benefit from yoga.

“Plus, it might bring people into the studio who would never have tried yoga,” Koontz continues. “Maybe they sign up because they are interested in looking younger, but they stay when they realize all of the other benefits yoga has to offer.”

Whether it’s external beauty or internal fulfillment, it seems those who practice face yoga and see results are unlikely to hang up their sticky mats anytime soon. “I have never felt so beautiful,” says Troy, who credits her positive vibe to an inner spiritual energy as well as what she sees in the mirror. “I definitely enjoy the fringe benefit of looking better — I am only human.”

    Face Yoga Poses to Try

Here are some face yoga postures to try at home, courtesy of yoga instructor Leta Koontz. Her DVD, Fresh Face Yoga, will be available this fall.

Lion Face (pictured at top of page)

Take a slow, steady inhale of breath and constrict every muscle in your body: your toes, your buttocks, your fists — everything. On a slow, steady exhale, relax those muscles, stick out your tongue, widen your eyes and open your hands. Repeat three times. On the last repetition, try to hold the exhale position for 30 to 60 seconds to really stretch your tongue. According to Hagen, this is excellent for circulation to the face as well as a great way to release tension in the jaw — which she says tends to lead to wrinkles.

    Inversion

Stand with your legs in a wide stance with toes pointed slightly inward. Bend forward until the crown of your head touches the mat. Gently rest your thumbs on your chin and place your fingers near your cheek. Koontz recommends inversions for a healthy complexion. “The blood pressure in your head rises and the body reacts by lowering your blood pressure level,” she says. “Your heart beats slower and your blood vessels dilate, or relax.”

    Brow Smoother

Sit in any variation of the lotus position you prefer and place your pointer fingers on the outer edges of your eyebrows. Then slowly and gently pull your eyebrows away from each other, and at the same time, close your eyelids. “This is like natural Botox!” says Koontz.

    Twist Times Two

To develop the muscle tone in your face, Koontz recommends twisting your face when you twist your body. Once you are in twisted position, lift your cheek and press your lips to the same side your body is twisting. At the same time, gently stretch and relax the muscles on the opposite side of your face. Repeat for other side.

Good morning everyone!   Hard to believe it's the last day of March already.    Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend!   Not going to harp on it, but MIL was up to her usual BS yesterday, and made our fun family outing similar to having root canal.   Hopefully now we won't see them for another 8 weeks or so.

Muril, thank you for recommending today's topic.   It's probably the only yoga I'd have the coordination enough to try!    Interested on hearing what you've learned from the book you got as well.

I've got lots of running around to do today, all the errands from Friday that I had to put off due to the snow.    Jake has school, so will be getting him up and moving shortly.

Thanks again to everyone for their understand about needing some time away last week.   Looking foward to catching up with everyone!

Good morning.  Have some things to do this morning, Mel is taking a few people out for lunch today and as he says him getting ready is like getting a baby ready. Will read your post later.

Muril we were out yesterday and stopped at Q's, had one on the sammie's, liked it but was still hungry and out a side salad. I didn't get the cheese and they don't give you much turkey. Said it has 300 calories, but with out the cheese it knocked off maybe 75 calories. Loved the bread, even though it was white.

I know this is going back, but I thought of it yesterday. Blue jeans, when I was young they didn't make girls blue jeans that zipped up the front, on the side. Even when I was a teen it was hard to find jeans made for girls, you wore boys, and they did not fit right.Maybe that is why Miss Nancy never had jeans, DM never wore them. I love jeans and would wear them more, but in the summer they are HOT

    Good Morning!

Don't have a heart attack, I know it's been forever, it's called life! I finally got my divorce, but I ate my weigh through the whole thing. didn't gain it all back, but I sure am disgusted, am vowing to get back into my "skinny" clothes.

Just wanted to say how much I've missed you all and today I have vowed to learn how to use the new layout on the website, scared me off at first and I was pretty overwhelmed with everything else at that point, so it just wan't a priority.

The cool news is, my son who has cooked at the restaurant for 2 years with me was just accepted into culinary school, he leaves this fall. My baby....child after my own heart!

Will be in and out today working on maneuvering around here. Good to be back.

Good morning! It's finally supposed to hit 60 today but of course there are supposed to be thunderstorms all day so I won't be able to go out and enjoy it!! LOL!

So we have what I'm convincing myself is a mini tragedy with the wedding...the bridesmaids dresses came in wrong. My maid of honor was supposed to have purple and the other 2 girls green. Well they got my maid of honor purple and one other girl purple also so there is only one green. Angry I really don't care who wears what color as long as my maid of honor has a different color. Which normally they could just switch dresses cause they are basically all the same size except my maid of honor is 5 1/2 months pregnant! So....I found this all out Saturday afternoon and will be calling them first thing this morning.

And my ear starting ringing last night and hasn't quit. Anyone know what that could be or how to fix it?

    Waving to all!

Hey ladies!  Sorry I've been MIA for a few weeks.  I've been... A) embarrassed to post b/c I've eaten total crapola since my SIL got sick, and B) frustrated by how long it takes this site to load even with DSL.

However, there is good news.  She's OUT of the hospital!  She came home the day before Easter.  she's living with my IL's so she doesn't have to be alone during the day.  Her heart was still at 15-20% when they checked it as she was leaving UVA Medical Center, but she is on pretty minimal meds.  She's carefully watching her sodium and potassium intake, and she's up to where she can walk a mile at a time now.  To look at her, you wouldn't know she's as sick as she is.  I saw her for the first time in weeks yesterday when we went to my IL's after church.  The kids hadn't seen her since the whole ordeal began about 5-6 weeks ago.  It was a really nice afternoon.

We will be burying her little baby on Wednesday afternoon.  That's going to be sad, but it needs to be done to bring closure to everyone.  Now that SIL's life is no longer in danger, I think the loss of the baby is really hitting everyone extra hard.

OK, better get going.  Today is my "June Cleaver" day of the week... I try to take Mondays off so I can clean my house, do laundry, plan weekly menu, etc.  I love this day.  I turn on my Mom's old Neil Diamond Greatest Hits CD and I guess it just reminds me of my childhood or something.  It all makes me feel so happy.  :)

Good morning.  Hope you all had a great weekend.  Vicki, good to hear from you, and glad to hear that you and your family are well.  Jeannie, you've had a few stressful months....I think you can justify the crappy eating.  Knowing you, you will be right back on track.  BTW, I have the "Hot August Nights" album by Neil Diamond....a real favorite!  Jolene, my MIL is big with the face yoga,no kidding.  She links it to "reflexology", and the lion pose was one she told me about when I first met DH.  (she's his stepson).  Anyway, she swears that if you do the lion, and take a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar, you can ward off the beginnings of a cold.  My husband's cousin used to tease her about "witchcraft" and that someday they'd burn her at the stake!  Sorry to hear that Monster-in-law was true to form this weekend.  Ugh.  Reminder.....My DH knows people in Boston that can make her go away.

I agree on wearing jeans in the summer...I don't know how some people do it, especially black jeans.

Jen, a similar thing happened at my sister's wedding.... We all had different color dresses, and the flowers were planned to match each dress.  The DAY of the wedding, the florist shows up with one bouquet that was the wrong color.  Too late to do anything about it, but my sister handled it pretty well.  Lucky it wasn't my wedding, he'd have had the bouquet where the sun doesn't shine.  People that do weddings really need to be detail-oriented, don't you think?

Jet, sounds like a busy week.  Not sure I'd be too excited about the babysitting, but I'm not really a "kid" person. LOL.  I love babies......but once they start to talk, all the glamour goes away!

Ol' Princes GF and I made Lil' Prince's graduation party invitations this weekend. They came out pretty well, and I am sure glad she helped me out, or I'd still be working on them.  I made 36, I think we're expecting to invite nearly 90 people.   This weekend was cold and windy, so I (again) hung out at home inside, working on some projects and wishing I lived in the tropics.  DH's foot was bothering him, so he was nailed to the Lazyboy.  Hard to believe that we're going to be moving up to "camp" in 6 weeks.  I'd better make sure I have plenty of propane in the camper tanks....looks like we'll need heat for a while longer.

I'm trying to drink more water this week, because I think it helps ward off the migraines I get from time to time.  Hope you all have a great week.  PammieJ.

Re: HL Topic of the week 3/31 to 4/6 Face Yoga: the Fountain of YOUTH?

Good morning everyone Smile  Yeah, we had cold weather yesterday, too.  I don't know how cold it was, but we had a little bit of a sleet/rain mix during church - it all melted as soon as it hit, but it was still cold & damp!  Thankfully the peas are pretty hardy and like it cooler vs. hotter, so they should be just fine.

My FIL noticed Friday that my car inspection expires today, so I need to call and see if I can take it in and get that done.  I knew it was March, but with quitting my job, getting used to being home again, etc. it just totally slipped my brain.

It is cool and damp again today, I don't think I'll be able to hang the jeans on the line unless it really clears off and the sun shines this afternoon.

I did ride my bike Friday!  I don't know how far, probably close to 1 1/2 m., which I know isn't huge, but it was further than I'd ridden before.  I've decided that I AM going to get into my new jeans by vacation (middle of May), b/c they are the same size as I've been wearing, just a different cut (which I didn't realize when I bought them), and I don't want to have to buy new ones again.  I have one "old" pair left that fits fine, but they could fall apart anytime.  I think I'll try and do my Miracle Mile WATP dvd again.  It was working last summer before I went full-time at the bank, and then fulltime was so busy and stressful that exercise was the last thing on my mind ever.

Well, I should get off here and go get to work.  I've been diddlying around at nothing so far all morning besides taking a shower.  I'll check back later, have a great morning!

Yeah Pam you would think that but.... LOL! She's just lucky I'm so nice cause if it had happend to the bridezilla next to me at work, she'd probably be dead! This girl is getting married the week before us and wow is all I can say!

So my mom's boss called in this morning drunk. Yep at 8:15 on a Monday morning. Can you imagine? I would have died if my boss did that!!

They were making pretzels last night on Food Network so now I have a craving and I think I'm going to give them a shot tonight and see what happens!!

Tim's off to work, Jake's playing in his room, so hopefully I'll have a few mins to check in with everyone.

Most of you know, Jake has food allergies, and it was real nice to watch Trace Adkins on the Celebrity Apprentice trying to raise money for FAAN (Food Allergy Anaphalaxysis Network).  Unfortunately, he did not win the show, but you can go to ITunes and download his new single "You're Gonna Miss This" for 99 cents and the proceeds go to FAAN.     I'm not a huge country fan, but the song is real touching, and hey, it's only 99 cents    :)

Jet, sounds like a real busy week for you.   Glad the picture made you giggle  :)   I was going to move it down when I posted it, but it made me smile too    :)     Mexican sounds yummy, we went to Shorty's Mexican Roadhouse Saturday and had nachos and I had the "uncommon caesar salad".  It's romaine with spicy caesar dressing, blackened chicken, cornbread croutons and pine nuts.     Soooo good!

Dusta, hope you had a nice lunch out.   Interesting about the jeans!   My grandmother has never owned a pair of jeans either, she made all her own clothes.   Come to think of it, I've never seen my grandfather in jeans either...

Hey Vicki! Nice to see you back with us.   Congrats to DS, that's awesome   :)    Don't hesitate to shout if you've got any questions about the board, we're all happy to help.    :)

Oh Jen, I'm sorry about the dresses!    I sure hope that they get it fixed in time, and they ARE lucky that you are not a super BRIDEZILLA.     Hope your ringing ear has gone away!    Pretzels sound good.   I could go to NY just for the street vendor pretzels   LOL

Jeanne, so glad to hear the news about SIL being able to leave the hospital.    Don't ever stay away because of eating badly during times of stress, come here and vent!    Continuing to send SIL and all of you hugs and good thoughts.

Pammie, LOL on the "knowing" people.    Oh, and I wear jeans all summer.  I haven't worn shorts in 6 years.   In the house, I'll wear cut off sweat pants, but the minute I go out the door, even just to the yard, I wear jeans.   I don't wear tank tops either.     Sorry about DH's foot still bothering him.     I bet your invitations look great, boy does the time fly though, graduation for Lil prince already...     Oh, and we had snow today.   For about an hour.   It didn't stick, but I'm glad Jake was at school because I cussed like a sailor when it started coming down.

Anyone up for the IPod game?    I'm looking foward to getting back to the gym this week and I've got $10 on ITunes and have discovered http://www.mp3fiesta.com/    You can get songs there for as little as 10 cents each!

Jolene if you go back and look at older pictures they wore overalls. The pictures of my Dad when he was little is what he had on. Mel said that is what he wore to play in, but not to school, he went to a Catholic school. I have a pair that I bought a few years ago, when you saw them everywhere, but can't get in them now.

My lunch was too good. I had a salad, grilled lemon fish,(had never heard of it but they all had) and the killer, spinach souffle. They have the best hot bread, but didn't eat that, knew about the spinch dish, had it before. One of the women got Mississipi Mud Pie, add a little taste and it was sooooooooo rich. Don't know how she ate it. Have no idea about the points, counted it as 12, just a guess. No riding the bike today, the wind is rocking the motor home.

These same people are having a cook out Friday and we are going to it. Then in a couple of weeks someone else has invited us to a crab boil, not sure what I will be eating, but if I leave this area without gaining a lot of weight it will be a miracle. Ususally when we come here I gain 5 pounds, too many Poboys.

Jen how is the ringing? When my sinus were messed up one time my ears gave me a fit with noises.

    Good evening all.

I spend the day cleaning. It was much needed.  Nice to have it all done.  We are grilling at the moment.  I am going to do some laundry and watch the Padres tonight.

Wow, you have all been busy posting. I am going to go back and read all the posts after dinner.

    See you later.
