    Egg Roll Wrappers

I have been looking for wonton or egg roll wrappers and can't find them at the supermarkets (looked at 2 major chains).  I have no ethnic food selling stores near me.  Could I just be looking in the wrong sections of the stores?  Any suggestions?  Thanks!

    Hello RedviperOH,

I just bought egg roll wrappers for the first time last week to make the southwestern egg rolls posted here (which were great, by the way) and I had a hard time finding them in the store as well.  I asked some knowledgeable looking fellow shopper who informed me they were in the refrigerated section of the produce dept. with the bagged salad mixes etc.  Maybe that's where they'll be in your store also.  Hope this helps.

There is a big difference between egg roll wrappers and womton skins. Egg rollwrappers are much larger and thicker. Wonton skins are only about 3 1/2" square or in diameter (if you can find round ones) and much, much thinner.

Stires sometimes  have them in the refrigerated produce section near the oriental veggies or possibly in the deli counter. If you don't see them ask the cashier or somebody who works in the store.

Not all stores carry them in the same departents that is why we can't  really tell you where to look.

Forgot mention that not only the size btween egg roll wrappers and wonton skins is different, the egg roll wrappers are made from soft wheat flour and wonton skins are made from pure wheat starch.

Thank you all for your suggestions.  I did look in the produce section near the salad mixes but maybe I missed them.  Will ask someone that works in the produce department if they have them.

In the stores here, they are usually to be found next to the tofu, and refrigerated vegeatrian "meats".

Another thing is to check for spring roll wrappers - to use.  They are square and about 12 x 12 sheets.  They are in the freezer section of many stores.  All you do with them is thaw, cut into 4 and you got them to use same as the wonton wrappers.  I am not sure what they are made of, but I have used them before and they do work....

Piggy, spring roll wrappers are filled and then deep fried, then wrapped in lettuce leaf (to hold them)and then dipped into a fish sauce. They are thin and when deep fried in peanut oil are very crispy. Filling varies, but usually meat (lik a mix of pork and shrimp or just chicken), celery, green onion,a little  Chinese cabbage, maybe even some fresh bean sprouts and beaten egg to hold ithe filling together.

My Cinese friends used to make them and I like them much better than  egg rolls.

We find ours in the freezer oriental section and they are called lumpia wrappers.  We had to search also and that was last place we looked.  Good luck!

Lumpia are Phillipino food and  not quite the sameas egg roll wrappers or wonton skins but you can substitute.

Then there also are the spring roll wrappers made from rice"paper". They are made from rice flour, are very thin and come dry like paper. You soak thenpm in water for a few seconds, then fill, warap and deep fry. I like spring rolls made with those rice "paper"wrappers better than the others, they are extra crispy and crunchy and very delicate. They come in boxes, are round, about 7" in diam, you find them in oriental stores on the shelf in the same area where they seell the rice sticks (rice noodles)

    Re: Egg Roll Wrappers

To all that answered, thank you, I found the wrappers in a section of the store that has organic/oriental  in a refrigerated section of the store.  Have made egg rolls twice in the past week and getting the knack of it now.  They were very good but am going to experiment with some different recipes to see if we like anything  better than the way I made them before.  Several recipes had ground beef in them but I've never eaten egg roll swith ground beef so I was afraid we might not like them.  Made with ground pork the first time and with ground chicken and shrimp the second time.  All were very good.
