HL Topic of the Week 4/14 to 4/20 No Need to Stretch the Truth...

No Need to Stretch the Truth about Resistance Bands

You hear about them. You see people using them in the gym. They’re in stores, on TV, and have entire fitness classes designed around them. You think about these stretchy bands and what good (if any) they do. You want to know: What are the benefits of training with resistance bands?

Everyone from beginners to conditioned athletes can benefit by adding resistance tubes/bands to their strength-training programs. Resistance bands can add challenge and variety to any workout program, and they come in a convenient (and affordable) little package.

    VARIETY
To consistently see gains from a training program, and avoid hitting a plateau, it is essential that you are always varying your workout. This means alternating machine exercises, barbells, and dumbbells, and adding other elements like stability balls and resistance bands. The reason for this is simple: your body is smart & adaptable. Do the same exercises (same movements, same Range Of Motion, same angles) over and over, and the body is no longer challenged. It becomes efficient, and you no longer see gains.

The training possibilities of resistance bands are endless. They allow you to move more freely and achieve a greater range of motion (as opposed to a machine which controls where you start and stop). This allows you to create resistance from all directions—the side, overhead, below, etc. You can also adjust your angle of movement (by moving the fixed point higher or lower), and combine several exercises seamlessly. Bands also allow you to mimic movements that you do in real life. If you want to improve your golf or tennis swing, you can perform that exact motion against resistance—no machine can do that.

Bands can also be used alone (standing on a tube and doing a bicep curl, for example), or in combination with other elements that add even more challenge to your workout: stability balls, steps, Bosu balls, and wall mounts.

Resistance bands also differ in their degree of difficulty (signaled by various colors). The most stretchable bands have lighter resistance than the harder-to-stretch ones that offer heavier resistance. This, along with body position, allows you to customize the level of resistance to fit your strength level. You control the tension by shortening or lengthening the band. For example, when standing on a band to perform a bicep curl, add resistance by stepping closer to the handle, or make it lighter by stepping away from it.

When lifting weights, gravity plays a big part. You get more resistance during one part of the movement (lifting against gravity), but then gravity makes lowering the weight easier. When using bands, however, the resistance is constant, so you have to work harder.

    CONVENIENCE
You can work every muscle in your body by using resistance bands. Moreover, you can easily use them anywhere. They’re lightweight and take up hardly any space, making them easy to travel with or use at home, or even behind your desk at work. You can wrap a band around a doorknob, pole, chair, your ankle (for leg exercises) or almost any stable object. Plus, you can adjust the amount of resistance in seconds, quickly moving from one exercise to the next.

    AFFORDABILITY
If you are on a tight budget, but want to purchase a piece of equipment that you can use at home, resistance bands are a great buy. Since you control the resistance, you only need one, even as you get stronger. You can find bands, most of which come with an illustrated guide of exercises, almost anywhere from Wal-Mart, to sporting goods stores, to online sources, and they average $10-25. For such a versatile, long-lasting piece of equipment, that’s a bargain!

To learn more, take a group fitness class or try a video (see Related Content at the right of the page for an online SparkPeople workout) that uses resistance bands. Once you get the moves down, you’ll see how you can perform any exercise that normally uses dumbbells or machines with a band. By incorporating resistance bands into your strength-training routine, you’ll add variety (to stave off those plateaus) and convenience (for the days you can’t make it to the gym) at minimal cost.

Re: HL Topic of the Week 4/14 to 4/20 No Need to Stretch the Truth...

Good morning everyone, hope you all had a nice weekend.   I struggled yesterday, know that I'm over my points for the week, an unplanned trip out for dinner completely threw me off track.    Will get back on today.

Latest update last night from Debbie is that baby is out of Intensive care, breathing without extra O2.   They want to make sure she can continue to breath unaided for a certain amount of time before they send her home.    Continuing to send Laney, S & K good thoughts and prayers, and big hugs for Debbie too.

When I told my mom I was joining a gym, she offered her money saving advice:  Buy some "Stretchy" bands.   She lost her pregnancy weight after both babies and stayed around 100lbs most of her life with them!    While I don't think they would replace the gym for me, I definitey think they have some benefits and thought this article from Sparkspeople was interesting.

Will be back later, Jake was up several times last night and I think getting him to school on time this morning is going to be a struggle.   And I get to do it 5 days per week in September, yippee!

    Good morning.

Talked with son last night,  if Delaney had a good night they think she may get to come home today.  Scary when they tell you that if you had put her down in her bed instead of getting her to the hospital that she probably wouldn't be alive.   I've had David since Saturday morning,  at least last night he slept good.

Jolene,  I have 1 of those stretchy bands,  I had 2 but one of them broke.  If I would just use it I'm sure I would be able to see a difference.

Got to go get jennifer up so she can get ready for school.

Good morning. Been a long weekend, Mel is in hospital, for breathing problems, but was better yesterday. Oxygen level goes down every time he gets up, moves around.

My SD teaches classes on exercise, her degree is in some sort of health stuff. And she likes the bands too, she gave me one for my DM a few years ago but I don't think she ever used it. When I get back I will look into getting one, need to change my routine.

Debbie so glad baby is better, I know it was scary.

    Good Monday Morning!

Just have a couple of minutes - getting ready to go to Miss Nancy's. :)

Jolene, thanks for the info on stretchy bands. I am thinking of getting one. My new pilate routine with Denise uses one (in parts of the exercises) and I did it without one - using wts. when appropriate but think the band would be better.

(((Debbie))), thank God that baby Delaney is doing well.  That is scary. Saying a prayer for her and all of you.

Dusta, praying all is going well with Mel today.

Gotta go! Have a good day HLers!

    Hugs,

    ~Muril~

     Good Monday Morning

((((Debbie)))))) I hope Delaney had a good night. Thoughts & prayers are with all of you

((((Dusta)))))  hope Mel is going to be ok. Thoughts & prayers for both of you

Muril - have a good day with Miss Nancy!

Jolene - hopefully you can get Jake off to school without too much trouble. Sorry you got off track w/ points yesterday. Start fresh today!! ((hugs))

I've looked into the bands, never bought one though. At one time I found a magazine article that showed different exercises using the band, I may have to dig that up somewhere. I"m almost positive I saved it.

Had a nice weekend - we got some rain on & off, and it cooled down. Saturday we ran some errands & tried a new resaturant. It's new to us, but it's been around a while. It was a japanese hibatchi grill (sp??) but they also served Malaysian cuisine. Other than the different spices used, it was bascially stirfry, reminded me of the "base" ingredients of chinese. My dish was chicken stir fried with snow pea pods, red pepper, onion and pineapple, served over rice. Very good. Yesterday we finished getting the nursery moved around. I still have some decor to hang, and a few other odds & ends, but we're mostly done with it. Just waiting on baby!

hope everyone has a great day.

    Hello everyone!

Coming by real quick......busy at work this week!

Yesterday when dh and I were out and about....we ran into and an ice storm!!!!?????

it only lasted for about a mile, but was it ever coming down! Tonight we have a freeze warning!

    Where did spring go???

((hugs)) to everyone that needs one! It sounds like some need one! Right Hug

I am still sick, but I think my cough is better.....if only I could get rid of my sore throat! I don't think it is strep because its  not sore all the time....and I have heard other people say that theirs lasted a couple of weeks,.......I just wish i felt better!

I have a set of the strechy bands and a video to go with it, it does give you a good workout, but I just never have the get up and go to do the work out! LOL!  I need to start doing it again....I have missed the fitness center since I have been sick, and have been eating out a lot, so I havn't got back on the scales for a while!!!

Well I had better get busy!

Good Morning from a chilly Indiana.  It's 37 now with a high expected of 43 BUT . . . . at least the sun is shining Smile.  Like Jet said, we are under a freeze warning through tomorrow.

We had a quiet weekend which was nice for a change, especially since the weather was yucky.  We chilled and watched several movies, got some stuff done around the house - nothing really exciting but we enjoyed the time.

Jolene - Hope Jake didn't give you any problems getting ready for school.  No worries about being off plan yesterday - today is a new day.  It's all good.  Sorry about the nightmares, etc.  stress will do funny things to you.  Just remember - you are in control.  Smile

Debbie - Thoughts and prayers for you and your family.  ((Delaney))

Dusta - Sure hope Mel is feeling better - I imagine this weekend was very interesting for you - it's no fun sitting with someone who doesn't want to be in the hospital.  I had to laugh when you said Mel complained about the low salt diet - at 90 I think he should be able to eat what he wants.

Muril - Glad you had a good weekend.  Have fun with Miss Nancy today.

Jet - Hoping you feel better soon.  ((Jet))

Dawn - How exciting about the nursery - yahoo!!  The restaurant sounds good - I love a good stir fry.  They just opened a new place at the mall called Stir Crazy and I'm anxious to try it - I've heard good things about it.  Of course it's no place DH will go but me and a couple girlfriends plan to eat there our next "girls night out" - I can't wait!!

    Better get busy.

    Waving to all!!

    Big SmileHi to everyone!!!

I can't believe I'm on here - I have not been able to log in and talk to you guys forever!  My computor just wouldn't let me.  I have been keeping up and reading the posts most everyday.   The weather has been great here in the woods of SE TX - hope all of you are having good weather too.

DH turns "50" tomorrow Surprise and then I turn "50" on Wednesday!!!  I don't know when we got that old! lol  Guess you're as young as you feel - just don't feel so young on some mornings! lol  Anyway it's a big week this week for us.  My sister and her DH will be coming later in the week to stay a few days and celebrate.

My DS is coming back home for a while - getting his MBA - so I'm happy about that.  He's been gone a long time. (9 yrs)

When I was a Trainer - we used the 'exercise bands' a lot.  A lot of groaning and moaning would be going on in the class when we would pull them out.  If you do them right - they work good.  I really liked them.  Still have some - and use the occasionally.

JOLENE - I wouldn't give up a gym membership for them, but would suppliment workouts with them.

(((Debbie)))  - hope the little baby is doing better today.  How scarey was that!

(((Dusta)))  - how is Mel? Hope he's doing good today too.  Poor thing.

Muril - Hi!  Hope you have / had a good day with Ms.Nancy today.

Dawn - hope you're feeling well - won't be long for little Samantha to get here.  I read the book Fried Green tomatoes after reading some of your posts - You're right - - - SO MUCH better than the movie.  The movie changed the story more than I thought it would.  I'm on the waiting list at the library for MY SISTERS KEEPER too.  Hopefully they will have it soon.

    Hi JET & Michele -

Hope I didn't miss anyone - and hopefully I'll be able to get on here again! lol

    Waving to all, Debi

Re: HL Topic of the Week 4/14 to 4/20 No Need to Stretch the Truth...

Jolene - I liked Carrot Cake Murder, I thought it was one of her best. Minus the murder & primary story, I was surprised to see the secondary story develop as it did (hannah & her men). I always liked both men equally, but after this book I like one much more now. Not sure why, but the tone was different or Fluke is leaning toward one of them or something. But there was a definite dynamic change in this book.

Michele - your weekend sounds relaxing! We ended up watching Scarface on saturday, it's one of our favorites. I put it in thinking I would have it in the background while I did other things, only I ended up on my butt on the couch 30 minutes in LOL!! Never mind I've seen it umpteen times, I still have to sit & watch...

Jet - glad you're feeling a little better (((hugs))) Keeping my fingers crossed it isn't strep :-)

Debi - Happy birthday to you & dh Party!!!  congrats to ds! How great that he's going for his mba. Will he be "at home" as in in your house, or "at home"  as in living back in the same town? thanks for the good thoughts w/ Samantha - I feel good overall. Have only put on 16 lbs, have had the typical aches & pains, but nothing abnormal or excessive.I really can't complain, I've been able to enjoy the pregnancy.  I"m so glad you liked the book F.G.Tomatoes - I think it was much better than the movie. I know hollywood has to condense books, but sometimes they lose the magic. And her books are full of magic!  Hope you enjoy My Sister's Keeper :-) I"m almost afraid to see the movie now LOL!!

hope everyone is having a good afternoon.

I came back to motor home to walk Lulu and have lunch, had a Boca burger. Dr hasn't been by so we don't know about leaving, but he says he is.

Debbie a couple of years ago I could read the post, but I couldn't reply. Mel told me to, at the same time, press ctrl, alt and enter. I don't know why but it worked.

    Hi everyone.

    Hi Everyone.

Was it ever HOT here this weekend. It was 96 here yesterday.  Way too hot for San Diego in April. It is warm today but it will cool down starting tomorrow.

I hope Delaney is doing better.  That is so scary.

Jolene, the weekends are make it hard to stay on track sometimes.  We went to a buffet yesterday. I did not think I ate much but I felt so full even at bedtime and we ate at 11 am. I hate that full feeling.

Baby Samantha will be here soon.  Wow.  That is so fun. I love babies.

I have to get back to work.  Lots to do now that all the kids are back to school.

    Have a great day.

Running through, just got Tim out the door to work.   Need to get Jake onto a project or in front of a movie, then I'll be back to visit!

Jen can't get on the board today, and she's swamped at work, but wanted me to tell you all HI   :)

Re: HL Topic of the Week 4/14 to 4/20 No Need to Stretch the Truth...

Having a hard time getting Jake to do something independently, it's been one of those days!

My last update from Debbie was that they were hoping Laney could come home tonight or tomorrow, they are still suctioning her to make sure that nothing builds up.   Poor little thing...  Hugs for Debbie & family.

Dusta, I'm sorry to hear Mel is having a hard time.  Sending good thoughts for him.

Muril, I hope you have a really fun day with Miss Nancy!    I know they have the WATP series that uses bands too, but all the ones I have use the weighted balls.

Dawn, yay on getting lots done in the nursery   :)   I had mine done so early my sister made fun of me, but then I wound up on bedrest so I was sure glad everything was set up!    I know exactly what you mean about the Hannah/Mike/Norman thing, it gets old... Just like the Stephanie/Ranger/Morelli thing in the Plum series.   Just choose already!    LOL

Sending hugs to Jet, sorry you are still feeling lousy.   Tim and I were pretty much sick the whole month of March, he worse than I because he worked through being sick in the freezing cold warehouse.     Weird about the ice storm!

Michelle, thank you for the encouragement, I'm so hard on myself, especially when I do things and I know better  LOL    Your weekend sounds wonderful  :)   Hope your day turned out warm and dry!

Debi, so good to have you back with us!   happy early bday to DH and to you!     Isn't that great that DS is going to be closer for a while   :)    My sister is 33, has her Master's but has never left home   LOL

Betsy, wowza that's hot!   That's why I could never live anywhere but New England, I whine when it gets above 85.   I hate being hot!    Hope today is cooler.

Jake is tugging on me and yelling, I hope all the stuff I've posted makes sense!

David's other grandpa came and picked him up,  he's going to stay with them till his mom and dad get back home with Delaney.  I've had him since Saturday morning,     Not sure whether they will get to come home tonight.  DIL said what they suction her with looks like what a dentist uses, and of course they don't have anything like that at home.  Plus they will have to come home and find a new dr.  because they won't be going back to the FOOL that told her to just take Delaney home and suction out her nose.    Thanks for all the prayers and good thoughts.  Hopefully they will be home tomorrow.

Dawn,  once you have little Samantha don't let anyone with a cold anywhere near her.

Well,  I guess I need to go think about supper,  I have frozen hamburger, so maybe tacos.
