I need suggestions for a meatball sauce...

I am making some meatballs in the crockpot for an upcoming picnic.  I would like to cook them in a tomato sauce.  What brand of spaghetti/marina sauce do you use?  Or does anyone have a very tried and true tomato sauce they could share?  I am looking for the same type of sauce you could also use for meatball sandwiches.  Thank you.

This recipe came to me from a friend I used to work with.  She has an Italian mother in law and this is her recipe.  It was published in Cooking for 2 a couple of years ago.  It is so easy to make and it's the only recipe I use nowadays.  Hope you like it.

    MEATBALLS WITH SPAGHETTI SAUCE

    Sauce:

    1/2 cup chopped onion

    1 clove minced garlic

    3 tbsp olive oil

    1-28 oz can whole tomatoes

    1-8 oz tomato sauce

    1-6 oz tomato paste

    1/2 cup water

    1 tsp basil

    3 tbsp parsley

    2 tsp salt

    1/4 tsp pepper

In large pot heat oil and add onion and garlic, cooking until onion is transparent. Add whole tomatoes, sauce and paste, stir and simmer for 15 minutes. Add the rest of the ingredients and simmer while you make and cook the meatballs, stirring occasionally.

    Meatballs:

    3/4 lb ground beef

    1/4 lb ground pork

    1 cup fresh bread crumbs

    1/2 cup Parmesan cheese

    1 tbsp parsley

    1/4 tsp garlic salt

    1 1/2 tsp salt

    1/4 tsp pepper

    2 eggs

    1/2 cup milk

    oil to brown

Mix all ingredients together in a large bowl. Form into balls and bake at 350F for 1 hour or until done. Add to sauce.

    Hi!

I use "Prego" sauce. They make an assortment of varieties that are meatless.Ricotta/Parmean,3  cheese,Garlic & Basil,etc...all without meat and their sauce tastes really good also.

I use Prego to make everything from doctored up spaghetti sauce to meatball sandwiches to Lasagne sauce.

    Hope this helps!

Hello, this is the only sauce that I use now. It was posted by foodguy and has had  so many great reviews from the board.  Easy to make and wonderful on any pasta dish. I use it for my any recipe that calls for sauce.  Easy to make, and I triple the recipe and freeze the sauce for future use.  Try it you will really like it.  Gail  Smile

I just love this easy recipe! Its the best sauce I've ever had and we get tons of compliments on it.
A Chef, whose family owns a successful Italian Restaurant/Party House shared it with me. It is a scaled down version of the one that they use to make gallons and gallons of the stuff each week.
Now you purists, please don't laugh until you've tried it-it seems too easy to be true-measure everything into a pot and cook. We increase the batches and freeze it in 3 1/2 cup containers (about the same as a jar of sauce).

    Restaurant Style Spaghetti Sauce

    1 teaspoon onion powder
    1 teaspoon garlic powder
    1 Tablespoon olive oil
    1 Tablespoon butter
    1-6 oz. can tomato paste
    1-28 oz. can crushed tomatoes
1/2 of the 28 oz. can water
    1 Tablespoon brown sugar
1 teaspoon chicken or beef base
    1 teaspoon salt
    Black pepper to taste
    2 teaspoons dried basil
    ¼ cup Parmesan cheese

Combine all ingredients, bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer about 1 hour until thickened.
    Serve over hot cooked pasta.

I actually have Foodguy's recipe in one of my cooking scrapbooks.  I've made it before and yes it is especially delicious.  Because it's going to be a hectic day I was hoping to use a pre-made sauce.  My mother thinks I am nuts for wanting to make Italian meatballs, she prefers the grape jelly mixed with chili sauce method.  I guess I better figure it out soon.

My favorite jarred sauce is Barilla's.
