    OT ECZEMA

My sister has a bad case of eczema. Anyone have a homemade remedy or can recommend something - her medicine doesn't seem to help much and is expensive. TIA. Kate

Here's something I found...it calls for blended oatmeal in the bath and I'm assuming you have to blend the oatmeal for the others as well. It makes sense to after you read it anyway. Hope this helps.

For a soothing bath, process the oatmeal in a blender until it is a very fine powder. To find out if it is fine enough, mix a tablespoon into a glass of water. If it is absorbed into the water with no clumps, you’ve got it right. Sprinkle the oatmeal under running water as the bath fills, mixing it in with your hands. Soak for 15 – 30 minutes.

Adding honey to oatmeal is perfect for cleansing the face and hands or anywhere on the body where you have an eczema flare. As honey is also anti-bacterial, it is doubly beneficial. Simply mix equal parts honey and oatmeal and apply. You can rinse off immediately, or lie back and relax for half an hour and let it work its magic.

Oatmeal mixed with egg whites is an excellent exfoliating masque. Mix them together, smooth onto the face and rinse off only after the egg whites have thoroughly dried. The oatmeal provides the soothing eczema treatment and the egg whites leave the skin soft and smooth.

Obviously, you can’t leave these on all day - which is why you need a shielding lotion. As most eczema is caused by exposure to harsh chemicals, it is vital to keep the skin protected at all times. A good sheilding lotion is the latest natural dry skin and eczema treatment and is now recommended by thousands of doctors. The oatmeal will provide relief and the shielding lotion will protect you from further irritation.

A couple of years ago someone on the board recommended a cream that was ordered off the internet. I ordered it and it cured my eczema almost overnight and it never came back so eventually I threw the jar away. I will try to locate the place I ordered from but in the meantime maybe someone on here knows about this cream.

I was lucky and found the jar; I hadn't thrown it away. Here's the website and if you can afford it ($30) it is definitely worth a try. If it works (it did for me) it's priceless!

I read all the remedies for Eczema with great interest.  I have a terrible case, which has lasted months.  I've tried oatmeal baths, taking short lukewarm showers using Eucerin body wash (new - for Eczema), tried Aveeno body soap, rubbing down with Eucerin lotion for Eczema, Aveeno lotions, but nothing has really been effective.  From all my research and seeing 3 doctors, I've been told that noone knows the cause or cure, but each doctor has given me prescrptions for Clobetasol Propionate 0.05%, which is the strongest that can be dispensed.  It's a steroid cream.  It does help so much, and I'd be in real trouble without it, but I'm willing to keep trying other solutions.  I just ordered the tub of cream suggested.  You can never tell what will finally work, if anything, but it's surely worth a try.  Thank you.  Opallu

    Re: OT ECZEMA

Couple of things:  At one time somebody recommended to me that Witch Hazel is good for Eczema.  I haven't had a chance to research it yet, but plan on it sometime in the near future.  DS is 2 1/2 and has eczema but is doing well right now.  We keep steroid cream on hand from the dermatologist for outbreaks.  Also, a pharmacist I knew recommended probiotics which you can get over the counter.  These are just a capsule a day.  I have read several good things about this too.

Two great lotions we have found:  Vanicream lotion sold at wal-mart - but you may have to ask the pharmacist as they keep it behind the counter here.  It comes in a 1 pound tub with a pump.  Very thick, very creamy, no perfumes or dyes and hypoallergenic.

The other great lotion we found is Gold Bond Softening lotion.  We have tried many, many lotions including Eucerin and keep going back to the gold bond.

    Hope this helps!
