    Depo's Cola baked beans

I made these wonderful baked beans AGAIN yestereday.  They are always a big hit and just as good or better the next day.  I did decrease the brown  sugar a tad and added some dark honey that I had just so I could use it up and they were still just wonderful.  So anyone who hasn't tried them and loves baked beans be sure and give them a try.  Of course any of Depo's recipes I have made are always great.  AnnaWink

I want to make these beans for a party to serve about 60 women.  Would it work to make them in an 18 quart Nesco roaster instead of putting them in the oven. Would the bacon cook ok and how long would you think I'd need to cook them and at what temperature?

Margie - I've tried cooking the beans from start to finish in a Nesco Roaster but I promptly went back to cooking them in the oven and then transferring them to the roaster afterwards.  If you use the roaster only, I would definately pre-cook the bacon.  I think that the time that I DID use the roaster,  I ended up using the same temp, but doubled the amount of time that they cooked.

Let me get the "I love Depo’s baked beans" train started!  I’m the biggest fan Depo has ~ I cook for the fire department and if I can’t sing his praises loud enough let me have senator Easley help me out…..no lie! He will tell you he loves the LG fire department because they serve the best food in the state (quoted in the Tulsa World).

    • What did he eat that made him say that? The two single things were Depo’s beans and Sugar bug’s peach cobbler. I’m going to post the large version for you (this is what I make for the FD).

    • Oh ~ I would baked these in the oven the day before……then put them in the roaster the next day to heat, they are really the best…..I always made   DH’s grandmothers beans from scratch……this is  the next best thing….****I use Splenda brown sugar and diet coke ~ couldn’t be better!

    • DEPO"S BAKED BEANS --  LG FIRE DEPARTMENT VERSION

    • 1-7 pound can of pork and beans
    •
    • 4 cups brown sugar ****if using splenda brown sugar that will be 2 cups (I use 1½ cup)

    • 2 cups catsup
    •

    2 cups coke-cola (****I use Diet Coke)

    •  1-1 ½ cup chopped onions
    • ****I sometimes add 1 green pepper  to this
    • 1 tablespoon dry mustard
    • ****1/2 pound pre cooked pepper bacon
    • ****2 teaspoons liquid smoke (chicken's addition)

Mix the beans, brown sugar, catsup,Coca Cola, onion and dry mustard and place in a casserole dish.Dot with the bacon.Bake at 300 for 1-1/2-2 hrs. Depo!!!
