    re-canning fruit

    I'm so glad I have found these sites.  I was a subscriber to several of the magazines for years and now get them from the library.  I'm a huge shopper at Costco and Sam's Club.  I want to buy the 10lb. cans of fruit since the cost is so much less.  Does anyone know if you can re-can the fruit or freeze it with out any problems.

    I have wondered the same thing myself!  I sure hope someone knows, because they are a great deal!

    Me thinks re-canning would turn it to mush because of the extra long second cooking time. Freezing should be ok, especially if you use Food Saver bags.

    Excuse my ignorance but the nearest Costco is 150  mi from where I live. I am wondering if you are taling about cans that hold 10 lbs or #10 cans? (I have never heard of cans that hold 10 lbs)

    I agree with gr_elo. It would more than likely turn the fruit to mush. However you can freeze it in Food Saver bags and it is fine.

    I tried it as an experiment and mush isn't the word LOL.  Not a good thing. Now dehydrating, that worked. The end product was just sweeter than if I'd have dehydrated from fresh or unsweetened frozen. The juice can be recanned if you have a use for it such as mixing with soda water for a nice fruity drink or used in smoothies (just remember the sugar content)

    Thank you for the dehydrating idea.  I will give it a try along with freezing a few as someone else mentioned.  Also, the cans hold 10 lbs. as someone else asked the question.
