Happy 4th of July!! It is a bit cool this morning, needed to throw on a flannel shirt to do chores. It is suppose to warm up next week. I went into the city last night to get groceries, I got stuck in traffic twice due to accidents, both had happened just before I got there. One was basically just a fender bender, but the other one, some idiot in a truck ran a red light, hit a motorcycle & killed the guy. I had also stopped at walmart, and there were 4 police cars parked up on the curb in front of the store. Two shoplifters were in the back seat of one car & the police had another one in handcuffs in the store. If I ever have to go back into the city again it will be too soon. But at least I got most of the months groceries and will only have to run to our little town for milk & such.
Our setting hen is still on her nest in our little hayshed. The one that was sharing with her, got killed near the chicken coop. She must have been going to get something to eat, I don't know for sure. We take a chance of losing some hens with them being free range, but we feel they are happier being able to go where they want. Plus when the garden is more established we let them go in there & they take care of some of the bugs that are bad for the garden. We do close them in at night, because that is when most of the preditors are lurking around. Also, being free range, in the summer they go through hardly any feed, they find there own.
Margie, glad you had a good time at the cookout & at your ds.
Patti, I've been getting lettuce, onions & strawberries so far. My peppers are blossoming & a few of my tomatoes have babies on them. We got the rest of the garden in so late that it will be awhile before I get anything else. I need to get out & dust the broccoli, cabbage & brussels sprouts today. I also want to get beets planted. Can't make it through a winter without pickled beets. Sure hope it warms up like they are saying it will. I'm not crazy about hot weather, but my garden is.
Lisa, how is dd's shiner?
Deb, I can imagine how you must have felt seeing dh with his thumb wrapped up. We cut a lot of our own wood. It doesn't take much for a log to slip. We have a widow maker right now that dh wants to get down, but I told him to just leave it till my db can bring his cherry picker over or a storm takes care of it. I had a cousin who was killed by a widow maker, don't need the same thing happening to dh.
Cherie, I hope all 7 eggs will hatch, but it is unlikely that they all will. I just hope we get more hens than roosters. Sorry Andy was giving you grief, aren't teenagers just "wonderful" at times?
Jill, would you share your crock pickle recipe with me? My mom use to make them, but I don't know where her recipe ended up. I am hoping to try my hand a pickle making this year. It'll depend on how well my cukes & dill grow.
We are going to work in the yard & garden today. Hopefully we will get some wood cut & split too. So much to do, so little time. Tonight we will go see fireworks.
Waving hello to everyone, enjoy your day. Becky
