ISO: Recipe for 50's Ice Box Cake

I've searched the BB for recipes but they're not quite what I'm looking for.  I'm searching for a retro-style version......my aunt used to make this when I was a child and I loved it.  Some of the ingredients include....graham cracker crust, pudding.....that's about all I can remember.  If someone has a recipe to share I would surely appreciate it!!

Re: ISO: Recipe for 50's Ice Box Cake

I make one,(no bake) easy fast, and yummy. Line the bottom of a 9x13 baking dish with a full row of graham crackers. Next spread a layer of choc. pudding, then a layer of sliced bananas, next, another row of graham crackers, next a layer of crushed pineapple (drained well) next spread a layer of whipped cream (I used Cool Whip) next sprinkle on top with crushed nuts and decorate with marachino cherries if you like.  Put in refrig, for 2 hours or longer.  Can be made a day ahead. My family LOVES this. Don't know if  this is the one you mean but my Mom made this often and that was in the 50's. Hope this helps,

    Mary Lee

This is the one I grew up with - same time frame!

Scald 1/2 cup milk.  Add 30 marshmallows and mix until melted. Cool and fold in 1 cup cream, whipped.  Add 1 large almond chocolate bar grated. Add 1 tsp. vanilla. Pour into a graham cracker crust.  Chill several hours before serving. Crushed chocolate wafers may be used in place of the graham crackers, if desired.

It doesn't say, but I'm almost sure my DM mixed the sugar and butter with the crumbs and baked the crust.  Also, I would guess the cream was sweetened, but in this day and age, Cool Whip will most likely be used.  I seem to remember that sometimes, instead of the grated ch. bar, drained crushed pinnapple was added.

I havn't had this in years, but it was always a favorite at our house when we were growing up.

    Ice Box Cake

    2 packages chocolate instant pudding
    2 packages vanilla instant pudding
5½ cups milk (or whatever the instructions on the box call for)
    1 box graham crackers
    4 bananas

In a large bowl, mix together 2¾ cups milk and the contents of two packages of chocolate pudding according to the instructions on the package (e.g., add mix to milk and whisk for two minutes).

In a 9”x13” pan, arrange graham crackers on the bottom, breaking into smaller pieces to fit, if necessary.  Pour half of the chocolate pudding on top and spread evenly.  Slice two bananas and arrange in a single layer on top of that.  Add the remaining chocolate pudding.  Set another layer of graham crackers on top.

Wash out the bowl and mix together the remaining 2¾ cups milk with the two packs of vanilla pudding.  Spread half of it over the graham crackers.  Slice two more bananas and arrange in a single layer.  Add the rest of the vanilla pudding.  In a blender or food processor, pulse 5 graham crackers until pulverized.  Sprinkle crumbs over top of cake.  Cover and chill in the refrigerator (i.e., icebox) for 24 hours before serving.

Re: ISO: Recipe for 50's Ice Box Cake

This is the ice box dessert that my mother made and also it showed up at nearly every get together in the 50's and 60's. I even made it when I was first married.

    LEMON ICE BOX CAKE

    1 large can Milnot milk

    1 large pkg. lemon Jello

    2 1/4 c. boiling water

    1/2 c. sugar

    1/8 t. salt

    6 T. lemon juice (about 2 lemons)

    1 t. grated rind

    2 c. Vanilla Wafer crumbs

Chill Milnot until very cold.  Dissolve Jello in boiling water. Add sugar, salt, lemon juice and rind. Chill until syrupy. Beat Milnot until stiff. Whip Jello mixture into the milk.

Put a layer of crumbs in a 9 x 13 pan. Pour the Jello mixture over crumbs and top with more crumbs. Chill several hours or overnight. Cut into squares.

    ICEBOX CAKE

Old fashioned icebox cakes are making a comeback. Try making this easy no cook recipe with different flavors of pudding mix and frosting for a new taste sensation.

    Prep Time: 20 minutes

    Ingredients:

    • 16 oz. pkg. graham crackers
    • 2 (3.5 oz.) pkgs. instant vanilla pudding mix
    • 3 cups whole milk
    • 8 oz. container frozen whipped topping, thawed
    • 16 oz. container chocolate frosting

    Preparation:

Blend the pudding mix, whipped topping, and milk in a medium sized bowl. Stir until well blended.

Place one single layer of graham crackers in the bottom of a 9x13" baking pan. Do not crumble, but leave the crackers whole. You can fill in gaps with crackers broken in half if necessary. Spoon half of the pudding mixture over the crackers and spread evenly. Repeat with another layer of crackers and remaining pudding mixture. Top with another layer of graham crackers. Cover the pan with plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for 30 minutes to set up a bit.

Stir the frosting and spread it over the whole cake up to the edges of pan. Cover and refrigerate cake for at least 4 hours before serving. 14 servings

"Thank God this recipe is here! This was made at a school function by someone who has since moved away, but your website made it easy to find...My 9 year old son has remembered loving the dessert so much that he has requested it for his birthday dessert! How can I disappoint the birthday boy? Especially since it's so much easier to make than some character cake! We also "lightened" it up using lite whipped cream and 2% milk. It's a delicious dessert for all ages and diets!!"
