    spice expiration

I know some of my spices in my cupboard are over the recommended 2-4 years old. (some WAY over that!)  I've been using (some of) them and they still have flavor.  What do you do? Toss or keep on using?

    Re: spice expiration

I just cleaned out my spice area and found some spices I didn't even remember buying.LOL I decided on doing it after visiting McCormick spices web site and they posted that if you had spices that were made in Boston ( I believe) that they were over 10 yrs. old.Yep,I had some,I would taste test them and if some of the flavor has diminished, toss them.I now own 4 bottles of Italian blend spice and not one recipe that calls for it,need some? Depo!!!

    Toss 'em!

I am REALLY surprised that spices over even 1 year have much flavour left!! I buy in bulk (SMALL amounts, that I can hopefully use within 9-12 months) If they don't have a strong aroma, they are history!! The spice/herb flavours really do enchance a dish, and when it is lacking, then I find the dish falls flat, and it's a shame to waste money on quality food if the seasonings areen't there.

If, as you say, the flavour is truly still pungent, then I suppose you can still use them.... up to you
