    Monday: What's Cookin' (July 7, 08)(6:03 a.m.)

    Good Morning,

It's 76 out and to get to the mid to upper 90's.

Had a wonderful time last night at the church picnic out on their property and going through their church they are building.  It was nice to see where all the rooms will be, etc.

This morning, Michelle and I have lots of running to do.

Jim's going to bring a pizza home for lunch.

Tonight, the guys have 2 softball games.

    Enjoy this beautiful day.

    Re: Monday: What's Cookin' (July 7, 08)(6:03 a.m.)

    Cost VS Reward

I have seen repeatedly the breakdown of the cost of raising a child, but this is the first time I have seen the rewards listed this way.

    It's nice, really nice!

The government recently calculated the cost of raising a child from birth to 18 and came up $160,140!

That doesn't even touch college tuition.

For those with kids, that figure leads to wild fantasies about all the money we could have banked if not for (insert your child's name here).

For others, that number might confirm the decision to remain childless.

But $160,140 isn't so bad if you break it down. It translates into $8,896.66 a year, $741.38 a month, or $171.08 a week. That's a mere $24.44 a day!  Just over a dollar an hour.

Still, you might think the best financial advice says don't have children if you want to be "rich." It is just the opposite.

What do your get for your $160,140?

Naming rights. First, Middle, and Last!

    Glimpses of God every day.

Giggles under the covers every night.

More love than your heart can hold.

    Butterfly kisses and Velcro hugs.

Endless wonder over rocks, ants, clouds, and warm cookies.

A hand to hold, usually covered with jam.

A partner for blowing bubbles, flying kites, building sandcastles, and skipping down the sidewalk in the pouring rain.

Someone to laugh yourself silly with no matter what the boss said or how your stocks performed that day.

For $160,140, you never have to grow up.

You get to finger-paint, carve pumpkins, play hide-and-seek,  catch lightning bugs, and never stop believing in Santa Claus.

You have an excuse to keep: reading the Adventures of Piglet and Pooh, watching Saturday morning cartoons, going to Disney movies, and wishing on stars.

You get to frame rainbows, hearts, and flowers under refrigerator magnets and collect spray painted noodle wreaths for Christmas, hand prints set in clay for Mother's Day, and cards with backward  letters for Father's Day.

For $160,140, there is no greater bang for your buck.

You get to be a hero just for retrieving a Frisbee off the garage roof, taking the training wheels off the bike, removing a splinter, filling the wading pool, coaxing a wad of gum out of bangs, and coaching a baseball team that never wins but always gets treated to ice cream regardless.

You get a front row seat to history to witness the first step, first word, first bra, first date, and first time behind the wheel.

    You get to be immortal.

You get another branch added to your family tree, and if you're lucky, a long list of limbs in your obituary called grandchildren.

You get an education in psychology, nursing, criminal justice, communications, and human sexuality that no college can match.

In the eyes of a child, you rank right up there with God.

You have all the power to heal a boo-boo, scare away the monsters under the bed, patch a broken heart, police a slumber party, ground them forever, and love them without limits, so one day they will, like you, love without counting the cost.

    ENJOY YOUR KIDS AND GRANDKIDS!!!!!!!

Good Morning! This is so true and isn't it wonderful that some little things stick in your mind forever? I took my DGSs to see Hocus Pocus many years ago and the least one must have been about 5. It was a Disney movie and I didn't think about it being scary but at one point Nathan scooted over very close to me and whispered, "I think I'll just sit on your lap for a while", with both arms wrapped firmly around my neck too. It warms my heart every time I think of that and it has been many years ago. There are so many other heart warming things that can't be 'priced'. I certainly enjoy my kids and grand kids. Thank you for a reminder.

Oh, and I will be cooking zucchini and blackberries today.....but not together. I have about 8 zucchini that need cooking (too many, time to find some neighbors!!) and I'm headed out to pick the berries now. Maybe a cobbler?

Enjoyed reading the Cost/Reward! It is 72* here and to get to 91* they say. Chance of shower and thats about all we had yesterday too. DH is going into Omaha to get his part of tooth out that they left. It has been miserable for him. So he will have mashed potatoes and something soft yet. I am running out of ideas! I will have a brat sandwich as have to mow when I get home.

    Everyone have a good day.

    Good Morning

Suppose to be in the 70s today, reaching mid 80 by the middle of this week into next. Maybe summer is with us for a while. This has been a strange spring and summer.

DGDs parrot has been with us since Thursday, he talks non stop, if no ones in the room with him he YELLS let me out, OUT OUT OUT,  our 2 little dogs hate him and the cat spends most of her time on the porch, I wouldn't be surprised if the cops arrive at the door, neighbors thinking we're in trouble over here. I'll let him out in a bit, he'll spend most of his time on the top of the cage playing with his toys and yelling.

I have to go in today and have an Ultra Sound done on the arteries in my neck, its part of my yearly check in with my cardiologist, I had my aortic valve replaced with a St. Judes Valve (plastic) 14 years ago this September so I have yearly maintaince.

Dinner tonight will be meat loaf, mac and cheese and a steamed veggy, Ice Tea. Enjoy your day. Judy

Good morning, all. Today is another warm beauty with sunshine everywhere. I will be going for a BIG grocery shopping with DH today.  I plan on having a cooking marathon this week, going to fill my freezer with heat and eat dishes for when I get home from the hospital. I'll start tomorrow and hopefully be done by Thursday. I'd like to have enough meals to last for three weeks, making some things big enough to have twice, like lasagna. For tonight we will have baked bass with oniony rice , asparagus and salad.Have a good day.

Good morning.  It's 81° with a predicted high of 97 today.

CK, loved your Cost Vs Reward.  While you are raising kids, it seems the cost is never-ending.  It's only after they are grown that you look back and recognize the rewards.  I forwarded this on to my daughters in hopes that they will see the rewards as they are happening.

Allie is spending several weeks with her dad, so it's just Stephanie, Tyler and me for a while.  Tyler and I are the early risers in the bunch so I made him bacon and pancakes for breakfast and put some in a warm oven for Stephanie.

Have no idea what I will make for dinner.  Maybe something on the grill with some crock pot baked potatoes.  I have some sirloin steaks thawed out but found that I was out of soy sauce for the marinade.  Guess I will pick some up in town when I go to the library later this morning and cook them tomorrow or the next day.

Three of the DGDs are in the T-Ball/Softball playoffs this week.  Don't know how I will manage to make everyone's games.  At least the games are close to home, some in Ferris which is 5 miles away and others in Palmer which is about 5 miles in the other direction.  Allie (7) isn't all that gung-ho about it all, but Sara (9)is an awesome player and Bailey (5 yrs. old) is trying hard to meet the standards that Sara has set.  The little ones are such a hoot to watch.  When I picked Bailey up after practice the other day, she said, "Nana, I hit the ball over the fence!"  We did a lot of high-fiving and "Way to Go" congratulating.  It was only later that I learned that the fence she hit it over was behind the plate, or in other words, a foul ball.  Hey, no matter what, she did hit it over the fence!  You just gotta love them, don't you?

NavyGrammyTX, love the Tball stories. It takes me back to when my boys were younger. Noah started when he was three, because he was big for his age, and I was his first coach in little league tball and basketball. Those were the days...now it's basketball and football, and I try to motivate, but it's hard being a sideline coach/mom for me and the DH, as he was our oldest son's coach for many years, and he only helps coach basketball now.

I made a yellow squash casserole to be baked along with some breaded cod for dinner. We'll have sides of fried potatoes, corn on the cob, and a green salad. And since I have extra zucchini, I baked a chocolate toffee zucchini cake for snacking on.

    Have a good Monday!
