    Cyber Bullies

I heard this on the other day.  I was driving at the time, so I don't remember it exactly, but it started with a girl arriving at a friend/acquaintance's house.  The mom let her in and told the other girls she was there.

Immediately one of the girls spoke up, saying things like, "Oh, look who showed up.  I didn't think you'd show your ugly face here again after the dumb things you said last time.  God your fat!  Oh, and have I mentioned your zits?  You're such a waste of space.  I wish you'd just go kill yourself."

Then the announcer-voice came on and said, "If you wouldn't say it face-to-face, don't say it in cyberspace."

I thought it was a great commercial.  Harsh enough to get my attention, and very blunt in its message.

ITA with you, Lady Fingers.  Truth to tell, though, it's somewhat sad that our Society now has to have PSAs to advise folks how they SHOULD behave.  My parents taught me all of that.

I have often thought that - especially when some of the worst bullies on this board say they wouldn't speak up to someone on line at the supermarket, for example, because "you never know what people will do these days".

On the other hand, I then know their bullying here is just an expression of their feeling of helplessness/hopelessness in their own lives.

Good point, Mel, and that kind of ties this in with your thread about online friendships.  I think some people do use their "less real" online interactions to let out tensions and frustrations for which they can't find an outlet in their face-to-face lives.

    Re: Cyber Bullies

there have been many cases in this country of oyung teenagers committing suicide because they were bullied in cyberspace,,,how awful would you feel if your own child was involved in anything, you would never get over the guilt of it...apparently some have ways of getting at other people just by computer....

Mel, to be honest, I am often surprised how aggressive and abrasive some people get here to others, often during a discussion..I have never understood the need for it...they will actually personally insult other people because they do not like whatever opinions are represented....to me, that has no place in any adult discussion, at least not the way I discuss things with my friends...and I do sometimes wonder if these same people would be like that were they face to face with someone...and I think that is some kind of bullying, isn't it? You do not agree with whatever my opinion is on anything, so I can use any old language to you that I like...I think never mind feeling helpless, they are probably no great shakes in real life and therefore have to come to a public forum to throw their weight about...it is some kind of inferiority complex I think....I would love to see them interact in real life!
