sad they have to do this....but I guess it's the only way to get the parents attention.......

I don't think my girls ever cut school either....I remember they did a round-up years ago and it was on the news....they showed a mom YELLING at her kid from the police station to the car....I told my girls that would be me....but LOUDER.....

Our school district does that in some cases. We look at each case individually; sometimes the parents are doing all they can to get the kid there, and the kid is at fault. In that case we haul the kid up before the Department of Juvenile Justice, where they sign a contract the courts back up. In some cases the family has special circumstances, and we take them before a medication committee. But there are cases where the parents are just too lazy to make the kid go to school, or in one case the parent had the kids in the doctor's office or ER every day (I kid you not - every day for something like 60 days she had one of her three kids in to see a doctor, and they weren't sick!), and we take them to court.

Had to testify in court one time many years ago in a truancy case.  The parents were brought before the judge, the dad fell asleep in court, (snoring) and the mom, you didn't want to get down wind of her if she sat near you with her legs "spread" which she always did.   She made it very difficult during PT conferences, because of the way she sat.  I could hardly keep from laughing at dad, but did restrain myself.  I didn't want to be in trouble with the judge.........Gram  Smile

One of the benefits of volunteering at school - everybody knows who I am & which kids are mine - they get away with NOTHING!

It is not doing the things we like to do, but liking the things we have to do that makes life blessed!

I see a BIG double standard with the Hispanic kids.  My district might offer "harsh words" but then their "immigrant rights" mights be violated, whether the parents are here legally or not.  Lots of times with the younger kids, truancy is due to neglect at home -- someone can't get out of bed, probably because they're hungover, or are just too lazy to take them to school.  It's sad.

They will take parents to court here for truancy because as Mcate said many times the parents aren't getting the young ones up and ready for school. Some parents don't care and will even make excuses for their children. Our county now accepts 3 notes from the parents for excused absence. After the 3rd one, you must have a note from the doctor, dentist, funeral home or judge saying why the child was out. After about 10 unexcused absences, they start calling social services and pursuing court action.

The majority of Hispanic people I know put a much higher value on education than most other people do, and their kids are the ones in school every day. I'm sitting here looking at this week's paper of who was sentenced for truancy petitions, and every last one of them was white.

Thanks to Mister Hit-and-Run, I am fully versed in the ways of truancy court. Honestly, if your kid is determined not to go to school, it's the only resort you have if you give a damn at all. I hope he's sincerely proud that after dropping out, he's now graduated to criminal court!

LOL Crabby. I used to get mine up and have them in the shower, because I had to be at work at 7 a.m., and they'd just go back to bed after I left home. I was a single parent, I had to work, what could I do?

Exactly right. What the white parents need to do is claim to be Muslim and nothing will happen either.

BFC, it's not that there are more Hispanics -- it's just for the ones that are. there is often a double standard.  I had a student who had thirty something absences, the vast majority of them unexcused,  and the mom was at the school checking them out all the time.  This family also got freebies right & left from our family advocate.  When I asked the advocate if any of "those letters" had been issued to the parents, she just shrugged.  That standard has not held true, for the most part, for non-Hispanics.  That's just our county, though.

Weird - it certainly isn't like that here (in regard to hispanics or any other group getting preferential treatment). The public schools in the 2 districts I am familiar with are also very hard on parents of habitual truants and they often end up in court.

I would suspect in districts with more blatant racism, things are handled on a case-by-case basis.

    Excuse me? Please clarify.
