I think I'm on to something here

I have always hated to get rid of my old TOH and other rieman mags,so I have Quite a collection. It would be like getting rid of old treasured friends. I seldom got to try recipes, because of picky eaters, but I still hung on to them. My DD in NY informed me she is bad for throwing clutter away so I came up with a solution. both of us will go through each mag, and pick out recipes we'd like to try. We'll write down the recipe name and which mag it came from then go to that mag's website which usually has a recipe box. I'll pull up recipe, add to recipe box where it will be safe from crash, and distribute old mags to various Drs we go to. If the recipe is not there, will copy to computer. I just hope this works. I have 3 floppie's of recipes, and none of our computers has a floppy drive. Wish us luck.

Sounds like a wonderful idea. Keep in mind that there is no guarantee that Reiman's website will always be around. If you really like certain recipes, perhaps you could copy them to your computer, then back them up on an external drive or CD.

My old TOH magazines do take up room, but I just can't part with 'em.

I know what you mean about floppy disks. I had a bunch of stuff archived on floppies, too. When the newer computers came out, I was scrambling to copy my files to CDs. LOL.

Good luck with your recipe project.

I have always had a hard time throwing away any magazine.  I never finish reading them, so I stack and store them.  I have every single issue of the TOH magazine, since 1994, in super condition.  I still buy the hard back annual recipes every year too.  One of my daughter's wants the annual books, if and when I DIE.  I told her they are still mine until then.  The other daughter doesn't use the various cookbooks she got at her wedding showers.  That was 11 years ago.  She us doesn't care to cook much.  She has two little girls of her own, so maybe one of them will love to have my collection.  At least I have one neice that loves to cook and loves cookbooks.

Good luck with your idea about your magazines.  Sounds like a good one.

You can purchase an external floppy drive at Best Buy (not very high....I'm thinking less than $30) and plug into your usb port if I remember correctly. Then you can transfer to disc or jump drive.

As far as storing recipes online somewhere in cyber space let me tell you my little discovery. I've been known to use my yahoo email address to store things I've typed. They have a notepad type section to the email account and I put tons of stuff in there for safekeeping. Or you could use the 'draft' folder, just be sure to not email it out!

Reality is for people who lack imagination.

My DD and I have talked about the plug in floppy, but will check that out when I get settled. I'm taking floppies with me so if we find floppy drive I can change to a disc. what really upsets me is that when I bought my first computer it had windows 98. one of my favorite games was on my Shanghai Double pack. It won't work on XP, but some of my other 98 games will. I loved playing the great wall using famous paintings tiles. I'd look at tiles and try to guess who the painter was. I have done the store on email also, but usually used that for newsletter recipes or ones that I got from a site with no recipe box.
