Parents of Children with Autism Demand Retraction

Parents of Children Diagnosed With Autism Demand Retraction and Apology from Mike Savage

    Last update: 5:10 p.m. EDT July 18, 2008
NIXA, Mo., July 18, 2008 /PRNewswire-USNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Radio talk show host calls autism a "hoax," refers to children affected as "brats"
The National Autism Association (NAA) today joins thousands of parents around the country in demanding an apology and retraction from radio talk show host Mike Savage for his July 16 broadcast in which he stated that children affected by autism are "brats," and that bad parenting is to blame for a "fraudulent" epidemic now affecting one in 150 children.
"Autism is a very serious condition that greatly impacts the lives of those affected," said NAA board member Lori McIlwain. "Many children with autism experience tremendous physical pain from underlying pathologies, which accounts for the screaming this person callously dismisses. To have an uneducated opinion about autism is perfectly within one's right, but to earn a living by shock-value exploitation of children's suffering, while suggesting they should be called 'idiots,' is disgraceful."
While the symptoms of autism often include unusual or negative behaviors, there are serious underlying medical issues that cause these symptoms. "To suggest that these kids and their parents are to blame for autism is just plain ignorant," said NAA vice president Ann Brasher, who has a grandson diagnosed with autism. "The devastating emotional toll autism takes on families is unfathomable to those like Mr. Savage who haven't lived with it. He owes an apology to children and their parents for trivializing their pain."
In addition to a public apology and retraction of his words regarding children and families impacted by autism, NAA asks that time be allowed on the Savage show for a truthful portrayal of autism, its effect on families, and the advances in research that are offering hope for recovery to those dealing with autism.

He knows what hes talking about and everybody will shut up when he lays out the facts. The man has been a researcher all his life and knows what he is doing. There's a reason his books are NYT best sellers and acclaimed worldwide.

    Renee,

You know BK's rant on this has reminded me of someone else.  Kinda like Tom Cruise and his remarks on 'pyschiatry'.  That's it!  BK must be a Scientologist!

We could ask him, but I have to ask myself if I care????.........and I don't.

Yeah Tom has shown us some of that irrational behavior too, didn't he.  How he did rant & froth about things he didn't know what he was talking about....maybe BK is Tom...but dang, again I don't care.

I'm thinking about calling that number tomorrow and placing my complaint.  I can't wait to hear how this plays out.

Tom may be irrational when it comes to pyschiatry and medicine, but he seems to be a kind and generous person...Nah, BK couldn't be Tom.

Most of the shock-jocks that have gotten themselves into hot-water with their comments have ended up retracting and apologizing (or given some lame-o excuse), but you know it's insincere.

Wouldn't it be nice to see Mr Savage spend some time in the 'trenches' so to speak, with a family of an autistic child....let's say for a week or so??  Let's see how he deals with it.

We're fortunate that our granddaughter is high functioning and verbal......And when Savage talked about the ease of diagnosing the child....there was nothing easy about it, nothing.

He's an idiot.  It's nice to see the caring people here converse about this in an educated manner....Savage isn't speaking from experience--he's got something else up his butt & I doubt if anyone could ever get through to him.

As I said, until today I had never heard of the man, but I am sure he is like the rest of the Neo-cons, ignorant and selfish.  I'm sure sitting in his little radio studio all day ( and collecting his fat pay checks)he has a real well rounded view of the world...Confused

Retardo, he's spent most of his life living all over the world studying MEDICAL botany/anthropology. Why not do something actually smart like read about him.

    It's B-R-I-G-I-D (like the Goddess)

Yes, I know how to Google and I did read about him.  But, unfortunately, I still am not impressed.   Guess the name Michael Alan Weiner didn't sound 'strong' enough (or maybe it sounded too Jewish) so he had to go with Savage.

Guess I have that 'mental disorder' he talks about-liberalism!
