    WHAT ARE YOU READING? 7/20

Good Morning all you readers and posters out there.  Welcome to all the newcomers and hope you will stay with us.  You will get many good recommendations and meet a lot of very nice people.

I am just about to finish THE SHACK by William P. Young. " If anything matters then everything matters.  Because you are important, everything you do is important.  Every time you forgive, the universe changes, every time you reach out and touch a heart or a life, the world changes; with every kindness and service, seen or unseen, my purposes are accompllished and  nothing will ever be the same again."  William P. Young

This is a small book and worth the time you will spend reading it.

I will start DOMESTIC AFFAIRS by Eileen Goudge today.  As I was once a golf addict I am watching the British Open.  We had a small shower early this morning and expect thunderstorms today.  Maybe it will give us a little break from the hot spell.

    Everyone have wonderful week.

Re: WHAT ARE YOU READING? 7/20

CoolMorning Margaret and hello to everyone that stops in later, hot and humid here today, we have had a very good summer so far, enough rain and temps have not been bad. Much different from last year when it was so terribly dry.

I finished a cozy mystery yesterday recommended by a friend, it was pretty good. MRS. MALORY and the ONLY GOOD LAWYER-Hazel Holt. (This was a new to me author and I will get others by her.) Same friend also brought me CHILD of the MIST-Kathleen Morgan this is also a new to me author. I also picked up another by her CONSUMING FIRE. These are about Scotland.

On my TBR stack are DR. WORTLE'S SCHOOL-Anthony Trollope, JERUSALEM INN-Martha Grimes, THE HOUNDS and the FURY-Rita Mae Brown, and I still have THE LOCKTENDER'S HOUSE-Steven Sherrill and TALLGRASS-Sandra Dallas. Not sure about the last two, can't seem to get into TLH. It was also recommended by a friend who said she couldn't put it down. I may give it a few more pages, hate to start a book and not finish it.  I also have MAGIC BRANDS-Joey Greens(this tells different uses for name brand products, pretty interesting stuff). My daughter brought me this one. And then I have SARAH'S QUILT-Nancy E. Turner, this is an audio book.  So as you can tell I am set for a few day.

Have a good week and happy reading. Betty

I hope people don't get confused with the double post.  Don't know how that happened.  I was trying to edit a misspelled word.

grywv - I do hope you will read TALL GRASS by Sandra Dallas one of these days.  It is a wonderful story.

Yes, I did get confused.  Anyway I am re-reading two of LaVeryle Spencer's books.  Family Blessings and Bygones.  Both are wonderful family books by a great author from Minnesota.

Yesterday afternoon I read LEAP OF FAITH by Danielle Steel. I wonder if perhaps some years back before I recorded the books I read, I might have read this. It was short and an easy read. Last night I started LANCASTER BRIDES by Wanda Brunsetter. It is a story about the Amish.

Good afternoon to all my reading friends from hot and dry East Tennessee.  Hopefully, we will get some much needed rain this week.Cool

I finished reading early in the week an older book by Barbara Parker, SUSPICION OF DECEIT.  Attorney Gail Conner has opened her own office in Miami and become engaged to Anthony Quintana, a prominent criminal defense lawyer.  Gail takes on her first major client, the Miami Opera.  As a result, she becomes embroiled in the Cuban revolution movement, and Anthony's past and present begin a dangerous collision.  This is a story of betrayal and deception with a somewhat surprising ending.

At the moment, I'm reading SUDDEN DEATH by David Rosenfelt.  The main character is Andy Carpenter, a defense attorney.  He is such a likable character with vulnerabilities we can all identify with.  He's called upon to defend a football player who has a very dead body in his closet.  In the process, he gets involved with the mob in New Jersey.  I can't wait to find out how it ends.  I think you all would enjoy this book.

Have a wonderful week, everyone.  Thanks for sharing your favorite books with me.

Re: WHAT ARE YOU READING? 7/20

BETTY:  You came upon one of my favorite authors, David Rosenfelt.  SUDDEN DEATH is part of a series.  This year, Rosenfelt veered away from the series and wrote DON'T TELL A SOUL.  The book was very good, but my girlfriend and I wrote to his website imploring him to write another Andy Carpenter book.  He assured us Andy will be back next year in NEAT TRICKS (I'm not 100% sure whether or not the book is entitled "Neat Tricks" or "New Tricks.")  Andy and his cohorts are lovable and hilarious.  PLAY DEAD, the last (so far) in the Carpenter series, was IMHO the best.  Right now I am reading, and laughing at, FEARLESS FOURTEEN, Evanovich.  The day here at The Jersey Shore is hot and humid with intermittent clouds -- a perfect day for the beach or the pool.  I might add, yesterday the weather was very hot and sunny, and we spent one and one-half hours at the beach in Spring Lake with THE TRIPLETS.  Methinks they are a tad too young to appreciate the ocean.  They loved the sand, though.  A lot of work for the parents and grandparents!  Mary Kay

P.S. SUSPICION OF DECEIT sounds like my kind of book; but tbr books are falling off my shelves.  This morning I had the nerve to select from our clubhouse library yet another suspense novel.  This one is by Diane Diamond (they said on the inside cover this is a pseudonym for a well-known author).  Title and synopsis intrigued me:  THE SECOND WIFE.

Phew! It's a hot day today!  I finished WHERE ARE YOU NOW by Mary Higgins Clark last night and enjoyed it a lot.

Next up for me is LOVING FRANK by Nancy Horan since it received such good reviews here on the site. (MARYKAY: I was thinking of your comments on the book yesterday when someone started to tell me about Frank Llyod Wright - architect vs personal -. I remember you said not to look up history before reading the book, so I laughed and told the person to hold up on the conversation until after I read the book!!!!)

GRAMMYWV: I read with interest your titles that take place in Scotland. What kind of stories are they?

I would love to read some books that take place in Scotland....either historical novels or set in modern day. If anyone has some good suggestions, I'd love to hear about them!  Thanks!

Stay cool everyone and happy reading!

zoe--I know I've read books that took place in Scotland, but of course I can't think of any of them right now, except the one I'm currently reading...still.  (I'm so envious of so many people here who read so fast!!).  It's called OUTLANDER by Diana Gabaldon and takes place in Scotland in the 1700's.  I'm enjoying the story very much, but a little too much romance for me....but I'm sure I'll eventually read the rest of the books in the series.

SmileZoe my friend had purchased CHILD of the MIST, she said it was very good. It came out in April '08, apparently it is going to be a series as it says These Highland Hills  Book 1. I like books  that take place either in England or Scotland. Just my thing.

Kathleen Morgan is the author of the best-selling BRIDES of CULDEE CREEK series. She is new to me so we shall see.

If you haven't read them try M.C. Beaton's Hamish Macbeth series. They take place in Scotland, so funny and good. Also Alexander McCall Smith's Isabel Dalhousie series. They are set in Edinburgh. Hope this helps. Betty

Good afternnon from muggy MN.  We've had our share of tornados this past week.

I finished Catherine  Coulter's TAILSPIN this week.  Loved it.  For some reason, I keep thinking John Sanford has a MAX in his books like Coulter did in this one.  Have to check that out this week.  On my TBR list a couple more of William Kurger's books.

    Stay cool everyone.

C3CLARK and GRAMMYWV: Thanks so much for the Scotland books. If anyone else has suggestions, I'd love to hear them !!!    I'm familiar w/ Edinburgh since my DS lived there for a while and it's so nice to be able to identify with places I've seen.   I read THE TOUCH by Colleen McCollough (same author as Thornbirds) and truly enjoyed it. It was a family saga spanning generations- beginning in Scotland and ending in Australia.

Re: WHAT ARE YOU READING? 7/20

Good morning!   Hope you all had a nice weekend!     I finished up Scottoline's FINAL APPEAL on Saturday, pretty good.    I will definitely read more by her.      Then got started on THE FRONT (Cornwell).       I want to like it.   I love her early Scarpetta stuff.   This takes place in the New England area.     I gave the first one in the series (AT RISK) a so-so rating.    Something is just lacking from her earlier work, and she doesn't write New England well, not like someone born/raised around here (a la Lehane's MYSTIC RIVER or GONE BABY GONE).

I've got a nice TBR pile, and may get in one more trip to the library before we head out to camp the first week of August.

    Unaccustomed Earth- Jhumpa Lahiri

    Dragon Bones- Lisa See

    Everything Changes- Jonathan Tropper

    One Last Dance- Eileen Goudge

Sandrine’s Letter to Tomorrow- Dedra Johnson

    Peony in Love- Lisa See

    Odd Hours- Dean Koontz

    Hold Tight- Harlan Coben

    Waving to all!

Re: WHAT ARE YOU READING? 7/20

Hello all.  It is a muggy, cloudy day here in Idaho, but still warm.  Maybe we will have some thundershowers later.

I have not been reading very quickly, but have managed to read Joan Hess's first Claire Malloy book STRANGLED PROSE.  I found another at a yard sale this weekend but cannot recall the title at the moment.  It was a good book, but it made me brush up on my vocabulary!! lol

I am reading FREE THE CHILDREN by Craig Kielburger.  He is a young man from Canada who started an organization (at the age of 12!) to oppose child labor.  It is an interesting story.

I also finished MAXIMUM RIDE by James Patterson.  Rather dark, especially at the beginning, but a good book.  I will continue to read books in the series, but not all at once!

Have a great week!  I don't know what from my TBR pile I will pick up next- so I'll have to fill you in once I finish them.

Re: WHAT ARE YOU READING? 7/20

Well, I was all ready to settle down with Loving Frank this week when the library called and said they had one of the books I reserved.  It's only a 14 day book, so I hustled over to the library and picked it up.  It's called The Story of Edgar Sawtelle by David Wroblewski. I started it right away and could not put it down! It is for sure the best book I will read this year! The language is beautiful, the story suspenseful, and the characters so real I'm sure I knew some of them. I finished it this afternoon and I don't even want to start a new book.

Check this book out at Amazon. It's on the top ten list. You won't regret reading it. Barbara
