    Route 78 through birmingham Al

Could anyone tell me a way to get through Burmingham without following all the big trucks through a detour and city streets?  We will be traveling on 78 from the northwest and want to hit highway 20 towards Atlanta.

I checked Google Maps, and it looks like you can take 78 straight to I-20, which will take you through B'ham. It's not that bad going through the city on the interstate.

We've been through there twice.  Out on 78 it says "All thru traffic exit"!  Then we go through the streets and all the stop signs.  This time we will stay on 78 to see where we can go.  I know the map shows it connects to 20, but will it?

Hopefully it will! I'm probably not the best person to ask, though, because as anyone here who lives in AL can tell you, that state HATES me! lol When they get horrible weather, Footsie comes here trying to find out if I'm in her state!

    I might have known!

Here I was driving south on I-65 minding my own business and wishing I'd been able to run this errand earlier, but a flat tire kept me tied up until almost 11am. Dang I hate running into Mobile this close to lunch time. It's blindingly bright and sunny out there, muggy as all get out, like you'd expect it to be in south Alabama in the middle of July. I'd been paying more attention to traffic near me but I looked  further out toward the skyline and exclaimed "Holy Sh!t!" Where'd it go? It looked like I was headed toward a massive fog bank, couldn't tell the sky from the interstate. But it's too late in the morning and that bright sun that I'd been sweating under since 7am had long since burned off any fog.

It's rain. Sheets and sheets and sheets of rain.

I might have known BFC was talking about driving thru Alabama.

Wrong end of the state for me. And the only time I traveled hwy 20, we were headed west, destination Texarkana, lol. I'm not even sure where we picked up 20, all I know is we started out 231 north lol.

We went through Burmingham on Saturday afternoon.  We decided to see where 78 went to.  It so happens that it comes to an end at an overpass and a small road into the woods.  There are no signs as to where the road leads.  You would think it would say something as to where it comes out!  We did a turn around back to where all thru traffic goes.  We went through the stop signs and commercial streets untill we arrived at highway 20. I think this is rediculous!

Did the state run out of $?  Why do the maps show that it goes through to highway 65?

Re: Route 78 through birmingham Al

We tried the same thing this weekend and yes it is poorly marked. Google maps is outdated and tells you to exit the new 78 at Jasper on Industrial Parkway. If you switch to Google Satellite view and zoom in you will see that the new 78 seems to be complete only to where the old 78 crosses it near Alden. This is the exit where they tell you "must exit to Birmingham now" but it still has a lot of surface road detour to navigate. If you go to weather.com and zoom in on their satellite view you will see that the new 78 is complete all the way to Cherry Ave. near the town of Republic. IF this is the case then I think Cherry Ave would be that "small road into the woods" that you mention. Has anyone tried this exit? It looks like you can exit at Cherry and go south for 3 miles then turn east on Daniel Payne Dr (41st Ave W.) and go 3 miles to I-65 then 3 miles south to pick up I-20. Has anyone tried this? Does anyone know when they will complete the new 78 all the way to I-65 or I-20?
