Prayer Circle Wednesday, July 23, 2008

And finally........drum roll please........here is the 5th and final installment on how we can make God smile.

God Smiles When We Use Our Abilities
    by Rick Warren

He has shaped each person in turn; now he watches everything we do. Psalm 33:15 (MSG)

    *** *** *** ***

After the flood, God gave Noah these simple instructions: ‘‘Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth. Everything that lives and moves will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything” (Genesis 9:1, 3 NIV).

God said, “It’s time to get on with your life! Do the things I designed humans to do. Make love to your spouse. Have babies. Raise families. Plant crops and eat meals. Be humans! This is what I made you to be!”

You may feel that the only time God is pleased with you is when you’re doing “spiritual” activities like reading the Bible, attending church, praying, or sharing your faith. And you may think God is unconcerned about the other parts of your life. Actually, God enjoys watching every detail of your life, whether you are working, playing, resting, or eating. He doesn’t miss a single move you make. The Bible tells us, “The steps of the godly are directed by the Lord. He delights in every detail of their lives” (Psalm 37:23 NLT).

Every human activity, except sin, can be done for God’s pleasure if you do it with the attitude of praise. You can wash dishes, repair a machine, sell a product, write a computer program, grow a crop, and raise a family for the glory of God. Like a proud parent, God especially enjoys watching you use the talents and abilities he has given you. God intentionally gifted us differently for his enjoyment. He has made some to be athletic and some to be analytical. You may be gifted at mechanics or mathematics or music or a thousand other skills. All of these activities can bring a smile to God’s face.

You don’t bring glory or pleasure to God by hiding your abilities or by trying to be someone else. You only bring him enjoyment by being you. Anytime you reject any part of yourself, you are rejecting God’s wisdom and sovereignty in creating you. God says, “You have no right to argue with your Creator. You are merely a clay pot shaped by a potter. The clay doesn’t ask, ‘Why did you make me this way?’” (Isaiah 45:9 CEV).

In the film Chariots of Fire, Olympic runner Eric Liddell says, “I believe God made me for a purpose, but he also made me fast, and when I run, I feel God’s pleasure.” Later he says, “To give up running would be to hold him in contempt.” There are no unspiritual abilities, just misused ones. Start using yours for God’s pleasure.

God also gains pleasure in watching you enjoy his creation. He gave you eyes to enjoy beauty, ears to enjoy sounds and music, your nose and taste buds to enjoy smells and tastes, and the nerves under your skin to enjoy touch. Every act of enjoyment becomes an act of worship when you thank God for it. In fact, the Bible says, “God generously gives us everything for our enjoyment” (1 Timothy 6:17 TEV).

God even enjoys watching you sleep! When my children were small, I remember the deep satisfaction of watching them sleep. Sometimes the day had been filled with problems and disobedience, but asleep they looked contented, secure, and peaceful, and I was reminded of how much I loved them.

My children didn’t have to do anything for me to enjoy them. I was happy to just watch them breathing. As their little chests would rise and fall, I’d smile, and sometimes tears of joy filled my eyes. When you are sleeping, God gazes at you with love, because you were his idea. He loves each one of us as if there were only one of us.

Parents do not require their children to be perfect, or even mature, in order to enjoy them. They enjoy them at every stage of development. In the same way, God doesn’t wait for you to reach maturity before he starts liking you. He loves and enjoys you at every stage of your spiritual development.

You may have had unpleasable teachers or parents as you were growing up. Please don’t assume God feels that way about you. He knows you are incapable of being perfect or sinless (1 John 1:8). The Bible says, “He certainly knows what we are made of. He bears in mind that we are dust” (Psalm 103:14 GW).

What God looks at is the attitude of your heart: Is pleasing him your deepest desire? This was Paul’s life goal: “More than anything else, however, we want to please him, whether in our home here or there” (2 Corinthians 5:9 TEV).

When you live in light of eternity, your focus changes from “How much pleasure am I getting out of life?” to “How much pleasure is God getting out of my life?”

God is looking for people like Noah in the 21st century – people willing to live for the pleasure of God. The Bible says, “The Lord looks down from heaven on all mankind to see if there are any who are wise, who want to please God” (Psalm 14:2 LB).

Will you make pleasing God the goal of your life? There is nothing that God won’t do for the person totally absorbed with this goal.

I think Randy can edit the title later, after she's stuffed her face with Coldstone. LOL!

Sisters, I quit cooking. I'm not a happy camper. That's all. Now I need to go back and read the lesson.

Does God feel pleasure when He sees me wringing my DH's neck, especially because he deserves a neck-wringing??

OK, I'm going to shut up and not come back here until I can play nice. Deb

Oh, Deb-----playing nice isn't necessarily the most fun thing to do! Smile

I just posted my longer post to the PC on the one for Tuesday.  Don't have time to go back and copy it over here.  If you want to know what's going on with me today, use the link.  Not that it's all that exciting, but just didn't want you to think I was MIA again.

    Must go now.

Deb, when you learn how to play nice, will you teach me?

Oh gosh,  it is soooo hard to get good help.   Confused   All I can say in my defence is that its been probably 3 years since we have been to Stone Cold Creamery.   Title of thread all fixed.

Now let's see if I can move NB's post over here.

Re: Prayer Circle Tuesday, July 22, 2008

    Blessings--

Have been trying all afternoon to get here--storms kept rolling through.  Lightning  Sun is shining now so hopefully things are calming down now.  Several big trees in town have either been split or blown down.  Lots of branches down also.  I was out looking at houses with Nancy (realtor) when the one hit.  Wind shook the SUV pretty bad while we were waiting one out.  Rain poured like out of buckets.

Looked at three houses today, two that are definitely possibilities.  One that is so not a possibility that it doesn't even make the No list!!!  One would need only a little painting--only because I really dislike yellow walls.  One would need more painting than that--every wall in every room is white.   I understand why--but it looks really stark as it is now.  Both are at good prices for me and both are move-in ready.  However, I don't have peace in my heart about either one yet--so I'll keep praying and ask you to keep praying for me.  Of course, I can't buy anything until my present one sells.

So sorry to hear of the tragic events that have been listed here.  Having grown up on a farm where I saw some serious accidents happen and having a young man I was very close to killed when his tractor overturned while he was home for Christmas break our freshman year in college--I do know with certainity the dangers farmers face on a daily basis.  I feel so for this family--not one, but two empty chairs at the table.  I will certainly keep all involved in my prayers.  Still praying for Baby Aaron and his parents and all those who are surrounding them with love and prayers during this time.

Our county 4-H fair begins today and the queen contest is tomorrow.  Yesterday I was concerned about the heat.  Today I'm concerned about what we will do if it rains/storms. Storm  Umbrella Lightning  Can I never be satisfied? Huh?  Keep me, Sherri, the chairperson, and all the girls involved in your prayers tomorrow.  It may be just a county fair queen contest, but it really means a lot to the girls who participate.  Plus, for a smallish county fair, there are some rather nice scholarships involved.

Went to the chiropractor this afternoon.  I feel so much better now.  Big Smile  My lower back had been bothering me since Saturday.  At one point a few years ago I would have never agreed to go see a chiropractor--but when you hurt bad enough you'll try anything.  Anyway, I had strained my back and neck so bad I could barely stand up--forget about sleeping, walking, resting, eating--anything else.  This dr. was recommended so I went.  He does accupressure and accupuncture.  Again, never thought I'd agree to those needles.  But it worked.  And it continues to work when I need to go back.  I've learned to go early--not to let it continue to get worse.  It just takes that many more treatments to get back into shape.  I'll need to be careful for a few days, but right now I'm in pretty good shape-----for the shape I'm in! Wink

Can't remember if I've told you guys or not--I'm in a FirstPlace group here in town.  FP is a Bible-based weight-loss, healthy lifestyle eating program.  Please pray for me as I work through this plan.  Pray that it will become more than a program or plan--pray that it will become a way of life for me.  It is totally Christ-centered and Bible-based.  If you haven't given Christ "First Place" in every area of life, then you can't expect to be able to make wise decisions regarding weight loss and eating habits.  (I'm down 17 pounds so far.)

Well, I need to stop now.  Everytime I get on here I promise myself I won't type so much and I won't be so chatty.  Zip it!  Huh?   Rest of you are able to get your thoughts out in a few lines.  I just get carried away with the sound of my own typing!!!  Confused   As a typing/business teacher (make that "former"), typing is second nature to me and before I realize it, I've shared a short novel with you.  Don't feel obligated to read everything I write.  Just scroll on by.  I'm just enjoying being here again, hearing about your lives and sharing mine with you.

Probably won't be here tomorrow.  First queen stuff is at 10:30 a.m. and I probably won't be home again until 10:30 p.m.

Almost forgot--HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Nancy.  GiftThere's a peanut butter sheet cake in the oven for you!  Cake

Have a grand one in the Lord--

    Re: Wednesday, July 23, 2008

I need some lessons on playing nice too! I am so mad and disappointed at my 2 teenage sons right now!Angry I have lost a lot of trust in them tonite. To top it off, DH and I were planning on a weekend away for our anniversary in August. We were going to leave the boys at home by themselves, and send the girls to grandmas. Now, we either have to find a place for the boys, or don't go, cause we can't trust them. DH asked me if I could go back 19 years and decide if I wanted kids again, what my decision would be. I told him not to ask me tonite. Ok - I'll quit - just don't ask me to play nice tonite. Let me cool off awhile!

    Hugs to all

    -Mari

Wow NB,  that First Place group sounds really nice.   Down 17#,  good for you.   I am really,  really having to work on losing some weight too.   I just don't feel good and I know it's the extra pounds I'm hauling around.  OK,  we went to Cold Stone tonight,  but I just had one scoop!

(((((((((Deb)))))))))))).....there has to be a backstory to the quitting cooking and strangling John.   I'm listening....

See you all in the AM at some point.   Have to do grocery shopping tomorrow but hopefully I will get here at some point.

Sending love and prayers out to each and every one of you.

It is the bible on one page, can be put into favorites and be brought up whenever you feel the need to go to the bible while sitting at your computer. If anyone is interested, if you send me a message, I will forward it to you. I really think most of you would enjoy it. I find it fantastic...e-mail address  scheidgirl@yahoo.com..  Toni

((((((((((Mari)))))))))))))   Been there,  done that.    Sometimes I think it's a miracle that Tom and I survived DD's and DS's teenage and early 20's years.   If it's any help to you,  we have finally reached that  stage where I hardly ever wish that I had drowned them at birth.   Just kidding about the drowning part,  but I'm sure you get the drift.    Take some deep breaths,   go outside and get some fresh air.......I'm praying for you.
