How Long Is It Good For . . . in the Fridge

I have a question for all of you . . . how long can food be kept in the fridge that's not running?  We were out of power for approximately 20 hours.  After about 13 hours, we got the generator running for a bit, then shut it (generator off) and then ran it again . . . probably a total of 2 to 2 1/2 hours total . . . and then off for the last 4 hours we had no power.  So . . . what food in the fridge do you think DEFINITELY has to go?  What will DEFINITELY be okay?  What is questionable, and how might I determine if it's good or not?

    Sure appreciate any replies ASAP.

    Thanks!!

I'd say anything with mayonaise in it or any raw meat or lunchmeat has to go.  Eggs too I think but I'm not sure.  Thats just what I'd do...  Veggies and cheeses are probably ok since you are supposed to bring cheese to room temp to eat it anyway.  I'd say condiments like ketchup, mustard, oil based dressings etc. are most likely Ok too.  The rest I'm not sure????  Hope this helps.

Susie, I don't know how long things will keep, I know things keep longer if you don't open the door.  I found this online. I couldn't copy it, so will post the link.  www.foodsafety.wisc.edu/consumer/fact_sheets/poweroff.pdf

This lists which foods may be safe and which are not.

Good luck, hope you can save some of it.

I would think most of the condoments and pickels (minus the mayo and salad dressing) wold be fine, your vegetables should be fine. I would throw out dairy and meats. However the frozen foods are ok I would think if you use them quickly if they are still cold, and if they are still icy then its safe to refreeze (but watch for freezer burn and use them as quickly as you can).  sorry I know this is an expensive happening, our kids have left the freezer (stand up)  door open slightly and we have lost all of it a few times.
