ISO A cure for musty smell in clothes

    Hi All,

I thought I recently saw something posted about this but I cannot find it now.  I went thru an old box of things, clothes mainly.  They are not moldy but have that smell to them.  Does anyone know of how I can get the scent out of the clothes?  Thanks for any help.

I have had great success using Twenty Mule Team Boxax to remove all types of odors in washable clothing.

I had asked a similar question last week. I won an auction on e-bay of some very nice clothing. The whole lot smelled of mildew. I washed the first bunch like usual, but the smell still lingered. I came to the BB (of course!) and received several suggestions. One was to add a cup of vinegar to the rinse cycle. Since I always have vinegar on hand, I tried it. It worked really well! I didn't use a full cup, probably closer to a half, since it was a smaller load. Try it, you'll be surprised!

Vinegar works wonderful.  You could also try Baking soda about 1/2 cup.  This works really well too.  Last summer we went to the beach and when we got home I forgot about our swimsuits which were in the car in a plastic bag.  When I finally got them out they smelled horrible.  I used baking soda and you never would have known they were mildewed..

I bought a beautiful quilt at an auction and didn't know it came from a HEAVY smoking house. I can't stand cigarette smoke and thought I just lost my money. A friend recommended odor ban-got mine at walmart. I bought it in a spray bottle, spread the quilt on the floor of the garage and sprayed both sides heavily. I let it sit for about 30 min and then washed and rinsed twice in the machine--It's like new!!! The odor ban was in the laundry area and about 4-5 bucks a bottle, so not cheap, but great for problems.

Thanks for this...I actually was about to ask someone this same question. I have a pair of pants that I keep washing and washing and they continue to smell like mold! I'll try baking soda.

Yes, vinegar is the best - but, I have a problem, too - that being, a musty closet! Does anyone have any suggestions?  Oh, there's nothing in there and leaving the door open doesn't help. I'd like to close it up and put something in there, but what?
